    Default Melatonin

I am having major issues with my sleep schedule. I've been working 9-4am wednesday through saturday, and not falling asleep until 5 usually because I have to shower, put my stuff away and unwind. I go to sleep at 5 and usually wake up between 12 and 2 depending on how rough of a night it was. I had a super busy crazy night Saturday and didnt' get to bed until 6am and didn't wake up until 3pm...and as a result last night I couldn't fall asleep until 5 and didn't wake up until 2. I tried setting an alarm but I slept through it anyways.

Today I went on a super long bike ride in hopes of tiring myself out and being able to fall asleep by 2 because I hate WASTING my non-work days by sleeping in. Ideally I want to be up and about by 10, which means falling asleep by 2am.

I've tried melatonin, and while it does work, it makes me SUPER nauseous the next day, like morning-sickess level nausea- and it makes it almost not worth it to take it.

Is there a brand out there that doesn't cause nausea?? Is there anything I can do to prevent this? I don't work Sun-Tues and I'd really like to experience the daylight, as all I can do once it gets dark is stay inside reading and on the computer as I don't have any friends to go out with or anything to do at night.

Hmm, that's weird, I haven't experienced any nausea with it. I use the Natrol brand, maybe try that one? Or maybe something in your body doesn't like it for some reason.

Aww, I feel your pain. I hated waking up so late too. The bike riding sounds like a good idea.. But anyways, maybe split the pills in half? I had a brand once that had an indented line down the middle. I used to take half pills so I wouldn't sleep alllll day the next day. I found the whole pill used to be too much.
The nausea is weird.. I dunno why you'd get that.

I have this brand, and I only take one. Maybe i'll take half a tablet and see if that helps. 5htp causes nausea for me, and 5htp is kind of like the opposite of melatonin because it creates seratonin, so maybe I just react really strongly to hormones that affect the pituitary gland? idk.. it sucks though.

it does for me- everyone is different though. I'm really sensitive to anything that affects my hormones, the slightest tweak and I feel nauseous and pregnant.

Never had nausea from melatonin... works like a dream for me.

If you want to get up, set your alarm and get up when it goes off. This is the simplest, easiest, and most effective way to get back on track after you've gone off it. You might be tired that night at work, but there aren't any pills you can take to give you a charmed life.

I've never had problems with the Trader Joe's brand of melatonin but if you have a bad reaction to it I wouldn't keep messing with it. In some people it reduces the amount of blood flow which can affect the brain.

Plus it (well, my bottle) expressly states that you should NOT take it if you are taking 5HTP.

I used to take Melatonin, but it was *so* hard to wake up if I didn't sleep at least 9 hours. For the last couple months I've been taking ZMA. It seriously has been my lifesaver! I feel rested after just 6 hours of sleep.

I'd cut back on the melatonin dosage- if you're "forward shifted" in your Circadian Clock (most people with insomnia are), then take no more than 5mg (Many commercial preps vary wildly in their dosage or have too much active ingredient in them- if that's the case try splitting it to 2.5mg if 5mg still leaves you drowsy) exactly one half hour before you want to sleep with water and no milk, juice (especially citrus), or food (they fuck up the way your body processes melatonin). Within the next half hour, lie down and don't do anything like reading or watching TV. Meditating is OK, as is listening to something, as long as it doesn't engage you mentally.

You'll sleep whatever period of time your body clock says you need- make sure you allocate enough time for it. If you've cut back to 2.5mg, and are still groggy/nauseous/disoriented when you awake, listen to your body and lengthen the amount of time you set aside for sleep.

Melatonin won't work if you're over-caffeinated, using recreational opiates, taking anti-depressants, or suffering from withdrawal or PAWS- it's a "gentle hint" to your pineal gland, not a miracle cure. Don't combine it with thermonuclear bomb sedatives like Ambien and Seconal or OTC sleep aids like tryptophan, chamomile, and diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Melatonin works by "training your brain" and any of those will confuse it. The whole idea is to take melatonin for a limited period of time and go off it when your brain has figured out what its schedule should be.

P.S. If you ever visit the PNW for an extended period of time, see if you can get into OHSU's sleep program. They take pro-bono and OHP cases, although changes in medical liability laws have forced them to cut back on the number of accepted indigent patients.

I know the others have said it, but I agree with taking WAY less. Melatonin affects me like that too. I have the liquid with the dropper. The first time I took 3 mgs and the next day I felt like death. If I do take it now I only take one mg.

okay-- I'm curious. I've been taking oxylite pro every now and then. Before my period, and before taking oxylite pro I had the best sleep schedule for like two weeks-- up early in the morning, feeling really good, got productive, and then got to sleep like at ten pm or midnight. it was great! Then my period hit and I went back to my old sleep pattern of asleep at 7am up at 4 pm. I hate it. Trying to fix my sleep schedule, I'd be too jacked up on Oxylite pro-- even if I just took one in the early afternoon. Then I went off of it for like a week and I still can't regulate my stupid sleep schedule.

I've resigned myself to laying in bed at 5 and then laying there for like two hours until I fall asleep. I've tried getting up for a little while, but if I do, I stay up so that doesn't work.

Anyway, I took some oxylite today but not after three pm. I took a 50mg of 5htp at 9pm. I plan on going to sleep around 2am. I'm wondering if I should try to take 12.5 mg of melatonin or bypass that since I already took oxylite and 5htp today?

I took valerian last night but it didn't seem to work except for making me *slightly* sleepy. But then again, they were really old and it was the last of that bottle.

I would just try doing a lower dose until you find a dose that doesn't cause nausea the next day. Also make sure that you are just taking pure melatonin and not something with herbs in it. Get at least eight hours sleep. I believe the recommended dosage is 3 milligrams, sometimes they sell melatonin in micrograms so one has to pay attention to that to get the recommended dosage. I believe there are warnings to not take more than 3 milligrams, more is not always better.

I just took a look at the pills I took.
The 5-HTP is made by Nature's Way and includes 60mg Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) as well as 10mg B6 (pyridoxine HCl) and 50mg 5-HTP per pill.
The other ingredients are Cellulose, Maltodextrin, Aqueous coating solution, Modified cellulose gum, stearic acid, and Silica.

The Melatonin is made by Naturally Preferred (never heard of them) and has 3mg melatonin per pill.
Other ingredients: Calcium carbonate, cellulose, stearic acid (vegetable source), silicon dioxide, Magnesium stearate (vegetable source.)

    Here's what I did:
Took a 5-HTP around 9 or 9:30. Got REALLY tired, which I was surprised by. I know it helps with sleep but I was just expecting a sort of happy
little feeling if anything since it's my first time taking it in years. Went and laid down around 10 and kind of half dozed/catnapped. Boyfriend
got me up at 11 so we could go to midnight showing of avengers. From 1145 to maybe 2am, I slowly sipped half a large movie coke-- so I think
that was about the size of a regular coke. Then around 315-330 am I took the melatonin and was in bed by 4.

I didn't fall asleep right away but I felt REALLY tired, though I had done 3 hours of yardwork yesterday so that probably helped too. I just sort
of did this half-doze thing, and then eventually fell asleep maybe around 5. I woke up around 7 or so and put my eyemask on (I'll rig some special
curtains up today or tomorrow though the blinds block out a lot of light) and fell back asleep around 8 or so. Then I slept til just after 2pm.

I feel pretty rested. Didn't have that scratchy eyeball feeling I get when I get bad sleep. I'll try it a few more nights (this time without coke at night--
that was just because of the movie) and try to nail down a better system.
