    Default Foot problems

I'm having foot problems again. Last time I had a problem with my feet it was my right foot, I got a stress fracture on my 4th or 5th metatarsal (self diagnosed) after walking around san francisco in flip flops stoned and not realizing how bad my foot hurt until I got back to the hostel and couldn't put ANY weight on it. It took 2 weeks to heal, by resting it and wearing doc marten boots (the only supportive shoes I had access to)

Now, it's my right foot, and it feels like the bone of my big toe and through the middle of my foot is developing a stress fracture, if I bend it too sharply and put too much weight on it it feels like a sharp pain. It even hurts when i just flex my big toe up and down when there's no weight on it. Is this a stress fracture? What is it caused by? I'm guessing it's from spending too much time wearing heels at work and wearing flip flops when I'm not at work..

What can I do to make this stop happening? Obviously not wearing heels at work isn't an option, so I want to know if there are any bone/cartilege strengthening supplements I can take and also what the best kind of shoes to wear when I'm not at work are. I need to buy some new shoes anyways, and I was looking at :

    Danskos (the clog kind)
    Earth shoes (the boot kind)
    Simple shoes (the boot kind)

I'm vegan, but if there is no alternative to leather for shoes, I will buy leather shoes, preferably second hand off ebay or something. Any suggestions? Would gel insoles help for my stripper shoes? It's the ball of my foot by my big toe that hurts, so I'm thinking it might.

Also- when I was born my feet curled inwards and I had to get them broken and put in casts until I was 2 years old, I haven't had any problems with my feet until I started wearing stripper shoes, so I don't think it's related to that, but the fact that they were malformed probably contributes to that.

I have the stress thing going on with my big toe on my right foot. I noticed it last summer. I was at a party (not working) wearing four inch wedge heels and dancing with some friends. We were pretty hectic, rocking down real low. it was the next morning I noticed it.

It bothers me off and on. I have thought about having it x-rayed. I just take supplements, try to wear low shoes when not working (doesn't always happen) and wear gel insoles on my stripper shoes.

    have you tried crocs?

they are vegan and very comfortable. I like how light they are so it puts so little pressure on the bones of the foot. I own 4 pairs. They feel so natural to wear.

How about accupuncture? Chrissy68 has some posts about her foot issues and she found it to work wonders. She has a lot of stuff on here about working too. But take it easy because she didn't and had to take 6 months off work.

yeah... I can not take any time off work, I need to be able to walk around, if I didn't dance I'd waitress and I still need my feet for that! I wouldn't wear crocs... lol. They're too ugly. I'd rather get some ugly but supportive danskos, there's no arch support in crocs!! I have REALLY high arches. What kind of supplements did you take corey??

I've been meaning to find a new doctor on my insurance plan anyways, so I'm going to see if any alt. medicine practitioners do acupuncture-- good idea ! I never thought of acupuncture for my feet..

well, you can put inserts in crocs. Yeah, they are ugly, but they are vegan. As you know, there aren't many choices in that department.

How about Nike Free 5.0? I have 2 pairs of those. THey are very good for foot support, and vegan.

It sounds like you are developing a condition in your joint known as hallux rigidus where the big toe joint does not bend and there is loss of cartilage. Not much can be done other than surgical. There are some new procedures which help but don't let anyone replace the joint since it will fail miserably within several years. I suggest you consider a short course of mild steroid injections to relieve the inflammation.

Conservatively you can have a shoemaker put what is known as a metatarsal bar on the bottom of your street shoes which will prevent the toe from bending (usually less than $20) but put it on both or you will notice it too much when you walk. Sorry it won't work on your work heels. Any reasonable shoe repair shop can do this within an hour or so while you wait. About 1/2 to 1cm is usually sufficent and if it doesn't work, it can be removed.

Inserts will do you no good and save your money. BTW just in case you were wondering, this is what I do for a living so it should help.

    Best of luck

Don't walk around in flip flops, unless it's in the beach. Read an article that they fuck up your feet if you use them often to walk around.

What's the cause? Is there a way to stimulate cartilage production? Won't preventing the toe from bending eventually make the condition worse (hardening of the tissues -- creating faulty movement patterns in other areas of the body?

Why do you recommend injecting a mild steroid to reduce inflammation over anything else?

Sometimes I get pain in my big toe and it just needs to get popped into place. Walking/dancing in heels will cause toxins to build up around the joint. A long bath and a really good foot massage should help.

Steroids are an antinflammatory and used in small doses are very theraputic. All of the glucosamine suppliments avaialble will not stimulate new cartilege. Unfortunately when it is gone it is gone. There is no real way to replace it. There are some solutions which are made from rooster combs (there are some engineered substitutes which have no animal makeup as well) which do work for 6 month periods but are not approved in the US for use in the big toe joint.

Even if I would inject it there it takes 3 injections over a 3 weeks period and the stuff is seriously expensive and besides that it would hurt like hell to get the shots.

Try this......Use a metatarsal bar like I mentioned before. Take some good antinflammatory medications and rest for a couple of weeks. I'll bet you do better.

Preventing the toe from moving will only allow the tissue to heal. Remember you are not casting it or immobilizing it

There was some controversy over it a while ago. Basically they isolated this tiny element that is like 1/100th of the plant, and injected huge amounts of it into rats, and they got cancer. There are plenty of herb stores in Boulder that have it - I bought it while I was there.

Crazy. Yet they allow the sale of things like aspirin and over-the-counter NSAIDS.
