Default How do you avoid having your stage performance look "mechanical"?

I've been dancing for 6 months in a low-contact, stage focused city... so I've put a lot of effort into my stage presence/personality, eye contact, fluid movements and pole work. I don't do the same routine every time, (just depends on the song, the audience and my mood) but there are definitely some moves that are a standard part of my show.

I have a trusted regular who's been around the industry for a long time. He tells me that sometimes my performance starts to look "mechanical". That's the last thing I want to happen and I've seen other dancers do it.

    How can I avoid this?

ask the DJ to play music you would never dance to. for me... that means top 40's and hip hop/rap. buy a pair of wacky new weird shoes that force you to pay attention to how you're standing/dancing so you can't do your same old moves. Pretend you're on camera and give it 100 percent. Watch another dancer's performance and try to copy her- it will give you new moves and make you pay attention to what you're doing.

Make sure you smile when you dance. Mechanical to me is when girls just stare and chew gum while walking around the pole

Just relax and have fun. Fluidity comes in time. The more comfortable you get the easier the moves become.

Smiling is a must! Don't look like you're bored to tears up there!

Agreed! Absolutely nothing looks worse than a girl chewing gum while dancing on stage or giving LDs. Eww.

I'm very new and consciously work to avoid developing bad habits, like dancing on auto-pilot. So what I do is try one or two new moves every time I go up on stage. It keeps me energized and aware of my body. Also I've found that playing to and flirting with the customers around the stage keeps my performance fresh.

(I hope it's okay for such a new dancer to make suggestions like this... sorry if I'm stepping on any toes!)
