Default Your location vs Distance to work?

My partner and I are in the process of buying a house, we have our finances getting pre-approved (we already know what the conditions will be and will know over the next fortnight of the outcome)

Basically the area that we are looking at (and is in our price range and offers what we want) is a good 20km out of the CBD meaning around a $50 - $55 cab ride each way to work. I suggest to my partner I buy a car and at least it is going to be useful for other times I need to go out and he is home, but he doesn't want me to be 'followed home and stalked' by weirdo's who visit the club I work at, I can understand his frustrations, but I really want to get a car.

So as it stands, if we buy a house in that area and I work and cab/taxi it to work I will be down $100 - $110 plus my house fee of $60 - $70 per night I work, this means I basically have to make $160 - $180 before I start making profit, and this sounds so much to me.

Although I average profit of $400 - $1000 per shift I like every one else I have my crap nights and leave with like less then $200 profit.

At the moment as I live rather close to the city/work ($20 cab ride) my nightly earning profit starts at $90 - just above half of what it would be if we move to the new house / area.

Basically I am a huge procrastinator and what I am worried about is that I wont be bothered going to work on the week nights because I will be worried that I wont make much, but I know I can still have a good night, but I will fear I wont make profit, and I hate going to work to make less then $400 profit (after expenses) per shift.

So should I have to spend $160 - $180 before I go to work each day including house fee I already have to make heaps more then I do now to be in the green. I rely on the weeknights to make money and work as many as I can now, but I worry that moving far away with the new expenses of getting to work will put me off going to work and I will end up loosing interest in working because of the huge costs vs profit

So how far do you live from work? Does it affect whether you work some nights and not others or only work the busy nights? Do you go in with a cloud in your head of I have to earn $x amount before I profit?

I am stressing because I want to pay our new house off within 5 years (and accept no less then 70% paid leaving 30% to go) but if I don't work heaps of hours I wont make money and I wont get the house paid. If I am to pay it off with in 5 years my partner and I need to pay $7k a month off the loan, it is achievable but I don't want to have to stress about it and then resent my new house (dream home too) because I have to work my ass off any more then I already have to.

This is so frustrating, I wish my partner would just let me drive to work that way I would not have to fork out so much just to get to work. Car expenses are
    a) service
    b) fuel
    c) registration
    d) insurance
    e) tyres
If I was to drive my own car I worked it out to be like $20 - $30 in above expenses a night to work based on 4 nights a week work. I would get a new-ish car ($15k) most likely through personal loan and pay it off in advance (so triple the repayments) but the amount for the car will be off set by the amount I would have spent on taxi. Plus I don't have to worry about sleazy cab drivers / cabbing it late at night long distances and unreliable cabbies to pick me up to take me to work. I wish my man could see it like this

Public transport is not an option really as I don't really like having to meet a dead line of being at the station at a particular time as usually I run late and end up missing the train or bus and having to cab it anyway. It is not a mode of transport I would rely on for myself.

Thanks for letting me write this all out and seeing what I can come up with...

Who's to say you won't get followed home in a cab? I think that's a pathetic excuse to not drive. I think driving is the safest way to get too and from work, so long as you don't drink. There's no hanging around waiting for a cab. If you're worried about walking to your car yourself, get a bouncer to walk you. If that's not possible, organise to park near another girl at work, and walk together.

I only live 6 miles from work, so I really have no excuse for not going in.

If you're going to live that far from work are there any other girls that live near you that you could car pool with? It would definitely help save money.

Not really an option because most girls live close to work

I just called my boy whilst he was at work and I basically said we are buying in that area and I am buying myself a car. It will be a small, reliable, automatic, car, nothing flash, but aas long as it gets me from A to B then that's all I care about! I agree about the weirdo's following me in a cab, and being that most cabbies don't speak English (ir any) I don't really want to spend 40 - 50 minutes traveling with them in their car, because it isn't what I would consider to be 'safe'

I think getting a car is a good investment, I would cab it for the first month / month and a bit and purchase a car just after that period of time. I would also utilize as much public transport as I could during that time, just so I can save on the taxi fare....

I have also invited one of the traveling girls at work to have a room in my house and we split cab when she comes over, but I don't know how long that will last or if I definitely want someone to share our house...

Get a car! Living that far away lessens the chance anyone is gonna follow you. Just be careful. But 110 a night just for a cab is crazy!

Um, why do you have to spend $15 K on a "small, reliable, automatic, car, nothing flash"? You could spend half of that and still get something decent

Have you both factored in "worse case scenario"? What if you can't work for a period or him or the both of you? Will you have enough money in reserve to still be able to aggressively pay your mortgage?

It is all good and well that you want to pay it off so soon however have you really thought about everything? What about the market changes in that period? Gosh, we may be back to a liberal government by that time.. it is 5 years!

A LOT can happen in five years (as I'm sure you're very well aware)... have you got other forms of income that don't require you to work so much to pay off the mortgage?

Why not buy the property as an investment property first? Have the tenants pay it off (or help you pay it off).. ??

I think you should get a car and that your boyfriend is worrying about it too much. Surely you can do things to minimise risk of being followed too.
I walk to my accom after work currently and in the past have also used busses, trains, cabs and I think even ferries no real problems at all.

I live 28 miles away (40 minute drive). I probably would go in a little more often, it the club was 5 minutes away. But who knows.

I don't ever go in with an attitude of, "I have to earn X amount to break even". I just don't. I think that would jinx myself or something.

Personally, I think spending $160-180 each shift, before you even START working, is absurd. I spend $10.00 in gas (round-trip), and a $10 house fee, $20 tip outs. $40 total, and there is never a doubt that I will make that. That's 2 dances.

I think you should absolutely get yourself a car and save $$$$.

    Thanks for your replies!

With repayments we have enough in reserves to keep the repayments going, unfortunately getting a tenant to live in the house and help pay it off is not really an option at this point in time, but in 2 years - yes it will be an option. With my business and my partners income there is more then enough to keep up minimum repayments also we will have a 1 year buffer after 6 months so should something happen we have 1 year to get our asses into gear to keep up the repayments (minimum) paying it off is not a problem!!

Kamryn, we would probably live about the same distance from work, and I like the sound of doing 1 or max 2 dances to make back the money I have spent to get to work

The way I see it, the less I spend on getting to work goes into our mortgage and we pay the house off less, I would spend $28600 on cabs if I was to work 5 days a week basing it on 2 ways (and excludes house fee's) that is a huge amount off our mortgage and is what most normal couples would pay off their mortgage in 1 year and I am spending it on taxi!

Even if we were to choose a house that is closer to the city I would want to drive, taxi's are dangerous and I have more chance of being harrassed by a cabbie then driving home in the comfort of myself in my own car.... why can't he understand that ??? cries!!

I am sick of looking to buy houses, over it, had enough, I don't want to look at another house for a while! Fed up with going around in circles

I wouldnt let any guy tell me I couldn't have a car, sorry.

You can get followed in a cab, or raped by the slease bag driver (sorry I dont like king street cab drivers heard too many horror stories from girls at work).

I drive to work and feel much safer in my own car.

^I was just about to say what Jai said. Stand your ground, get a car its the sensible thing to do and he shouldnt be dictating stuff that effects your work / life.

Thanks for your replies! I have put my foot down said I was getting a car, he sooked then called me whilst he was at work and said he was sorry about being horrible and is going to let me drive to work. In fact he likes the idea of going to work in my car better then anything now.

I promised him that as soon as I encounter one problem I will not drive again, but by going by others history I won't encounter any problems any time soon!!
