Default Just turned 18....how does taxes work???

IIIIII KKNOOOOWWWW.....i sound retarded. But i need to know how taxes work.

I'm dancing right now, about to find another club but i think i'm gonna make on average 500-600 a week.

Now if i put that in my bank account...i assume uncle sam is gonna want some of my cheese....BUT HOW DOES THAT WORK??

What taxes do i have to pay and when?

Does it depend on the club how my work taxes are calculated? Is there some kind of form fill out?? (whats a w-2??)

Is there a specific tax for jobs like stripping?? (As an individual contractor, taxes on tips?)

I go to school in PA, but don't live there...is there a PA tax i have to pay for too???

i'm so lost...can someone help me out with how taxes work??

There is no form to fill out at your club..... paying your taxes and keeping track of everything is your responsibility.

You have to keep track of how much you make, housefees, tip outs, expenses related to work like clothes, shoes, makeup, taxi, etc. Your best bet would be to either find an accountant for the end of the year or get turbotax.

I'm just shoving all my stripping related receipts in a box, writing down all my earnings/housefees/tipouts in a notebook and then hiring an accountant in february....oh yeah and putting like 10% of my earnings in a TAX SAVINGS fund, because I have no idea how much my taxes are going to be.

    10 % sounds a little high though doesn't it?

Depending on how much your state takes out (and I will tell you Ms. Mia, if you have to pay Philly city tax that's 7% plus PA state tax.) it's at least 15% federal tax plus the state tax. You are responsible for paying your own taxes. At very least go to an H&R Block main office (not a branch) and tell them you need to file Independant Contractor type taxes. What state do you live in officially? You'll likely have to pay taxes there too.

for starters, as an independent contractor, dancers are responsible for Social Security / medicare tax (a.k.a. self-employment tax) that amounts to 15.3% of your net earnings no matter how much money you earn. On top of that, independent contractor dancers are responsible for federal and state (business) income taxes. With a rough guess income of $550/week * 52 = $28,600 per year, after typical exemptions and deductions the federal income tax rate will be somewhere around 7% for a single dancer with no children. PA state income tax will be somewhere around 2.5%. So a wild guess at the total effective tax rate would be 15.3+7+2.5 ~ somewhere around 25%.

If you just started dancing / paying taxes, on September 15th the IRS is going to expect you to send them a check for the Social Security tax and federal income tax owed on your earnings between June 1st and September 1st. The state of PA is also going to expect you to send them a check for PA income tax owed on your earnings between June 1st and September 1st. You can find the IRS estimated tax filing form at (use pre-printed payment voucher 3 for September 15th) and you can find the PA estimated tax filing form at (write in September 15th )

25% of her net earnings she has to give away to the government? That's crazy.

So if she works 3 nights a week and makes 1000/week, 52,000/year and has 2K of deductions, she'll owe the government $12,500????

That is crazy.....what about paying for school? If you're paying 15,000/year for school can't you get that exempt???

Welcome to the world of 'small business' ! Who do you think actually has to pay for all of those expensive gov't programs ?

see (which is federal income tax brackets only)

So if she works 3 nights a week and makes 1000/week, 52,000/year and has 2K of deductions, she'll owe the government $12,500????
no ... because the tax brackets go up along with annual income, she'll have to pay a higher percentage. The 15.3% Social Security tax rate will stay the same. But the federal income tax due on $52k will increase to about 17% and the PA state income tax due will increase to 3%, resulting in a total tax liability of 35%. So if she works 3 nights a week and makes $1000 a week $52,000/ year and has 2k of deductions, she'll probably owe the government around $ 17-18,000 not $12,500 !

As to tuition tax credits, yes these exist but A. they don't help offset the 15.3% Social Security tax, B. the credit is capped at $1800 per year, and C. the Hope credit begins to phase out once the (single) person's income exceeds $47,000 per year, totally disappearing when the (single) person's income exceeds $57,000 per year. See

this is probli not good advice but this is what I did... since I was working a dayjob, the taxes where being taken out from every check. At the end of the year I filed my taxes and got some of my money back. I was also dancing while working at my other job, and all the money I made I put into my savings account and didn't have any problems when I filed. also, I've been working since I was 16 years old and I only started filing when I was 18 and found out I could get some of the money they took from my checks back.

I would also add that the IRS now has automatic reporting links to the bursar's office of every college, as well as with all federal student loan and grant agency. As a result, the IRS computers are going to be automatically informed that student with social security number XYZ has spent $15k on tuition payments in 2008 ... has received $1000 in grant money ... and has borrowed nothing. The IRS computer is then going to look up the average cost of living statistics for XYZ's zip code area, is going to look up XYZ's tax return, and is going to subtract the net tuition payments and the average cost of living from the amount of reported income (after tax). If the number comes out negative i.e. if XYZ apparently spent more money than XYZ reported as having earned in the first place, a red flag will start waving.

do they take into consideration that maybe the parents gave the money to pay whatever grants didn't cover?

The parents have to declare it... if the 'red flag' Melonie mentioned pops up, that would definitely be a first thing for the irs to check. Otherwise they'd have tons of extra false alarms!

I'll remember this next time you get all butt hurt when someone goes off topic in a thread you started.

    oh, and

Anyway, Mia, if you can avoid it, do not live right in Philly. They will assrape you on city taxes. I only pay 1% local tax in the suburbs.

There is a 3.07% PA flat tax. Where you live doesn't matter if you EARN it in PA. And if you earn it in Philadelphia, then there is an additional tax. it's 7% if you work and live in Philadelphia city limits. The self employment taxes in Philly are ridiculous.

For your first time, you might want to consult a tax pro. But this year you are expect from paying estimated taxes (well, you still have to pay them, you just don't have to pay them every quarter,) but you are going to get hit on April 15th, so just keep some saved. 25% is a good benchmark.

yes I do- but it won't be going towards military spending on the stupid war... and they have socialized medicine, so I'll save money in a lot of ways.

But all the people on welfare and section 8 housing and WIC and subsidized education and ... need you to stay here and give them your money!

And all those "nations" out there that need economic and humanitarian aid need to spend your money too! Only you can help feed the people of Zimbabwe (of course if you are white I would not recommend going there.)

All the illegals need that subsidized hospital care and jail cells to keep their gang banger brood in after they leave the house. They need you to pay for their meals and hospital care!

You are letting a lot of people down with your desire to not pay taxes. Really the people who are paying for the war are the Chinese.

If you want to think about it - you can easily say the pitiful amount you paid was spent to feed an illegal child a school lunch.

Does that make you feel better?

(This might seem snarky but it's not - I am serious.)

    eh ... no. not really.

If I want to feed hungry children I'll go directly over there and do it myself... with the money I earn from shaking my ass. I don't trust the government to get anything done.

Keira, it worries me that you're 19 and obviously have been working a while in your life and thought ten percent was HIGH.

I pay 49.5% tax as a noncitizen. Yes, you will pay MORE just because you weren't born there. And technically, you're supposed to pay your American taxes at the same time (but they have fuckall proof, monetary government details can't be transferred between countries).

You should save 30% of your pay in a high interest account until tax time and then use the leftovers you get as a 'refund' for investments (or a holiday) as an American.

Sorry Kiera but you're not a special little snowflake who gets out of paying taxes just because you're a student or have life problems - welcome to being an adult! (Or heck, I was paying taxes at 15, but I digress)

Ms. Mia, for your first year I'd defo hire an accountant and see what he says and learn from him for future years. Since this is also your first year stripping, it would be good to get you in a 'save money early' mentality from the getgo.

With you payng for school with your tax money, the IRS is quickly gonna realize you make more than you said and audit you.

What is UP with the 'I don't like that number so I substitute it with my own' mentality on taxes?

All you girls are going to get audited. Say goodbye to 50% of your income because they decided you made more.

Is it true that if you're making under a certain amount as an independent contractor, you don't have to pay taxes on it? Saya student was being supported by her parents while going to school, and stripped just a few times a month on the side for a little extra money. If it's under a certain amount, would she not need to pay taxes on it?

lol, welcome to the club. Do you think anyone WANTS to pay that much? Of course not, but we pay it because it's cheaper then getting busted and having to pay it anyway, plus interest and fines. That is if you are lucky and they don't over-estimate what you made....which they will, because you're a stripper and all strippers make $100,000+ until you prove otherwise. And you can think you won't get caught, but I'm guessing all the people that have been caught thought the same.

Just because you're a stripper, it doesn't mean you get to pick your tax rate. But you can go ahead and try, but why not pick 0% if you're just going to pick random numbers that best suit your life?
