Default Is this tour a good value?

I've always shunned package tours. I've love traveling, and I've always figured it out for myself without be shuttled around on a "If it's Tuesday, this must be Belgium" tour. BUT, I really want to take a trip to Japan, and I'm thinking of taking the easy way out.

For those of you who have done tours, can you recommend a company?
And for anyone who has been to Japan, do these tours seem reasonable?

Prices from USD $2410 *(plus local payment JPY ¥22000)

    Tour #2
Duration: 14 days (Tokyo to Kyoto)
    Days 1-3 Tokyo/Kamakura
    Days 4-5 Iya Valley

    Day 6 Matsuyama

    Days 7-9 Nagasaki

    Days 10-11 Ojika

    Days 12-14 Kyoto

Highlights: Hang out in hip and happening Tokyo, Visit ancient temples in Kamakura, Explore lush Iya Valley, Commemorate the past in Nagasaki, Learn about traditional farming on rural Ojika, Step into the geisha heartland of Gion

Prices from USD $2165 *(plus local payment JPY ¥22000)

I would also need a 14 day rail pass, and they suggest 400 USD for meals not included, and of course airfare.

I don't know what to do. I'm afraid if I don't go until I plan the whole trip myself I'll keep putting it off.

Ive spent a lot of time in Japan and to be honest I think you should go independently. Just buy a JR pass for however long you want to be in Japan and then you can decide how long you want to spend in each place. While touring Japan, I really recommend staying in a Ryokan (Japanese inn) for at least one night.

If that price does not include airfare or rail pass I am sure you would be better going it alone.
