    Default Sleep...

As everyone and their mother knows, I have sleep issues. I tried REALLY hard to sleep a set schedule. I even set myself up for one. I purposefully went to bed at a certain time for TWO MONTHS and it just. never. worked.

My sleep schedule lately has been 'when I can get it'. I slept from 4am-8am yesterday, 2pm-6pm that afternoon, and 12am-2am just now and was awoken from the phone. I plan on sleeping again (G-d willing) from 4am-7:30am when I need to wake up for training.

Which is obviously WAY less than the normal recommended sleeping times, and I know I won't get a nap in until at least 7pm tomorrow, after the maid leaves and training is over.

It's less stressful on my body than trying (without caffeine!) to stay awake late so I can get my normal 4am-12pm strippersleep. I just kept not falling asleep or, worse, waking up at 8 and not being able to sleep again. It was, previously, a constant battle of will to stay awake and then a constant battle to fall asleep... it never worked.

But now I just sleep when I'm tired - I worry about the longterm effects. It's seriously the best I can do. Sleep just doesn't work for me. I am hyper and have a high metabolism but I am always a bit tired. I still rarely drink caffeine because, well, I was on a caffeine diet for awhile and whoooeee, that doesn't help insomnia!

How healthy is this 'sleep when I can get it' pattern?

Doctors won't prescribe me anything long term and I -know- 3 months of pills will get me... 3 months of sleep. My schedule just reverts back the day after I stop taking them anyway. *sigh*

Im having the same problem although I sleep A LOT. But it's all at odd hours. I wish I was asleep right now. I got home at 730am this morning, fell asleep at about 8am and slept thru til 4pm. Then went to sleep again from 630 til 830pm and now Im wide awake. This of course annoys me coz now I prob wont wake up til 11 or 12pm tomorrow.

I say find a new Dr. If it is affecting the rest of your life....if you can live like this then fine...some people need less sleep then others. But a while back my Dr's decided that it was better for me to take meds every night and actually SLEEP more often then not, then get 2 hours of sleep a week and compromise my immune system as much as it was doing. I get sick a LOT less now and with all my health issues, the last thing I need is to compromise my immune system.

I assume you've tried everything else like I did....acupuncture, melatonin, no caffeine, changing diet/excersize patterns,etc...etc.....

Maybe try a sleep clinic as well...

It's definitely effecting me. I'm always tired even when I act happy/excited... I feel drained and I blink a lot and I yawn a lot (which is NOT good on a motorcycle) but all my friends see me as happy and perky so they don't realize it effects me. I also get little done because it takes me an HOUR to 'wake up' to do stuff.

Yeah I tried ALL that shit... well, cept acupuncture - but EVERYTHING else, yeah. I tried cutting out dairy, only eating healthy, excercising a lot more, eating less, eating more, melatonin... EVERYTHING.

I have seen like 198582 doctors and they all go 'but it's addictive and you won't be able to sleep without it!' yeah, well, I can't sleep without it NOW!! I haven't been able to since I was like... 13. No joke.

I get pills now and then and cut them in half and siphon them off so it takes me 6 months to get through 1 month of pills (just so I can get MORE sleep, not normal sleep) and they STILL bitch I ask for them too much. Blegh.

^^I was having the same issues. I was taking Lunesta, but I hated taking it because I didnt want to get addicted and not be able to sleep after I stopped taking them. My mom also had problems sleeping, then she started using an eye mask from TempurPedic and it has worked so well. I have been using one also and now I fall asleep and stay asleep without any problems. I think it has worked so well because it blocks all of the light out and forces you to relax and fall asleep. Now I dont have to use it every night, because I think it has "trained" me to learn how to fall asleep. I love it!

Wow that sounds so frustrating! I'm pretty sure solid sleep is the ideal, but if your body isn't asking for 8 hrs straight of sleep then it obviously doesn't need it. I really think our bodies ask for what they need, so if you needed it you would get it.
It also sounds like you're a light sleeper. Some people sleep through alarms and noise, while some people wake up at the slightest amount of sunlight. I would try removing all distractions, but I'm sure you've already tried that but I guess its worth suggesting!

sleeping patterns that don't allow for much sleep suck all together. I have had times when I can't sleep until I have finished all of my work, chased all the calls I have to follow up, although tired and almost falling asleep whilst doing it, I can't sleep until it is done, or my sleep is interrupted.

Good luck, sleeping problems can be the worst as it effects everything you do! Just don't drive whilst tired...

just be careful with the pills cause you can get seriously addicted, my mom is living proof of that, she can go through a week of no sleep without her prescription-pills. i took one once and i swear i saw things growing through my window.

I totally need it. My body IS asking for more sleep. I am groggy, upset, irritable and tired. I just can't get back to sleep.

That was my issue. Whether I get "addicted" to them or not isnt really an issue for me anymore. I've had horrible insomnia since I was a kid and would go days....sometimes longer on NO sleep until I got so sick I couldnt get out of bed. I'd have a flu or some sort of illness at least half the year because my immune system was so compromised from not getting sleep. So its better for me to just take the meds and sleep.

I have so much trouble sleeping.... I am a insomniac (sp?) but I hate taking meds and can't take pills (I can not swallow them) add that to the fact that I dance and go to school so I am up late and getting up early...one thing that I found that has helped me...and I don't know how much it will help you because it helps me get to sleep but doesn't help me with how long I sleep.... is to drink a glass of wine or beer right before going to bed...as a kid my parents always gave me a glass o pineapple juice.... that helped two ways....one: my body recognized the drink as a signal for bed.....two: alcohol....at least for me makes me tired, it relaxes me....so it helps me stay still long enough to fall asleep.

Two problems with that: I end up getting up to pee in the middle of the night and can't fall back asleep. And I can only drink kosher wine as a Jew - which is $30 a bottle, cheapest. Oh, and hard to get.

But thank you! Glad it worked for you.

Stupid question, but if you're a very light sleeper, ever tried using one of the big window fans to drown out the random noises that might be waking you up?

I've used one for years now. Noise machines don't do jack, give me a big ol' box fan. I swear the thing has saved my life and my sanity.

Noises aren't waking me up unless they're loud. I'm not a light sleeper, actually. NOTHING wakes me. Dead fucking silence and I'm awake at 7am.

Neighbour dog wakes me but that's because he barks loudly and nonstop for 1-2 hours at a time.

Unless you have COMPLETELY cut caffeine from your diet, it may be the culprit. (NO soda, chocolate, etc.) I used to have problems sleeping, and I didn't even have much. If I had three cups of regular coffee a week it was enough to mess me up entirely... Try getting off it completely for at least a month and see if it helps you! Realize it may be a mental thing as well- just thinking you will be able to sleep may solve your problem.

I did cut out caffeine completely. Like.. entirely.

But the thinking thing might work, I'll give it a go.

Sleep masks def make a difference too....I cant sleep without them now. Just the act of putting it on now has a Pavlovian effect on my sleep patterns.
