Default Mattress suggestions--what kind is best?

My husband and I really need a new mattress and we've been thinking about breaking down and buying a Tempurpedic. Does anyone here have one? And if so, how do you like it?

And any other suggestions for good mattresses are welcome. Our backs and necks are desperate!

I don't own one, but I've slept on one and it was really comfy. I also like the bed you can adjust on both sides.

They are both pricey but I think when you're buying a mattress it's not the time to scrimp.

I'm going to have to give props to my mattress
it is a sterns and foster "Silver way" and it is the most comfortable bed i've EVER slept on. It takes extra deep pocket sheets which can be hard to find and costly, but its amazing!

A Sealy brand mattress set, the ones that are priced $700-1,400. (You get what you pay for.) I did not like the Tempurpedic foam ones- I think they're overpriced and not that comfortable.

I'm interested in this thread too, I need to replace my bed and am open to suggestions as well....

Look into solid latex mattresses; these are not foam mattresses (like Tempurpedic) and they usually have much better support.

    They start around $1000.

I have a tempurpedic knock off..... it's a Spring Air Vertapedic.....feels EXACTLY the same and is amazing.....but it's the only mattress I've ever bought myself- all the ones I've had before were freebies, hand me downs, college dorms beds, etc.

I will never sleep on a spring mattress again... when I DO get to sleep I wake up with no aches or pains from dancing at all.... it's amazing. Natural latex ones are good too, that was my second choice but too expensive for my budget.

wow... therapedic- what company makes that one?? They're really all the same.... visco-elastic foam is visco-elastic foam. If you buy a tempur-pedic you're just paying for the name. Mine is a queen and it cost 800 without the box spring set.. but you don't need a box spring set with foam/latex mattresses, just a hard surface to put them on- like a platform bed.

Good point keira. You really don't need the box springs. It just acts as a platform and really doesn't have a function with most mattresses anymore.

I have a Europa latex/visco-foam individual coil mattress that was worth every cent of $1500.

I fucking love my memory foam mattress. I don't care about the brand -- this is whatever they sell at Design Within Reach -- and oh man it has ruined me for other beds.

sleep numbers are expensive but ohmigawwww

best bed ever. you can change the firmness!!!
even if you have a certain sleep number sometimes
you will want it firmer or
softer so this one is IMO the best for everyone

I have a king size, Sealy Sensations of Silk I bought about 12yrs ago, and it STILL rocks socks, and has almost no wear.

But when it goes, we are getting either the inflatable/adjustable bed, or a memory foam thing.

    OH ANDY!!!

i had serious insomnia when i was living back at my parent's while shuffling back and forth to canada. my mom let me sleep with her on her tempur pedic bed when my dad was away for work. i slept like a freaking baby!!! after that night i stole one of her pillows (also tempurpedic) and wow... even just a pillow made by them is amazing.

Stay away from pillow top. They don’t wear even. I’m learning this the hard way these days. I swear I will not let M go bed shopping without me ever again. Guess that is what I get for being lazy that day. Hmph!

I'm in the need-a-new-mattress-bad boat too. Latex or pillow top? Ah so many choices.

I had a tempurpedic and I liked it but I have to say that the Sleep Number bed is my favorite. You can adjust the firmness which is perfect because my husband and I have different preferences. It is my favorite and comparable to the prices of regular mattresses.

For those who have tried the Tempurpedic, did you notice if it retained heat? My husband and I both get really hot when we sleep, and I've heard that memory foam beds can be too warm. I really hope that's not the case, because we're really leaning towards one.

the tempurpedic is extremely heat sensitive- the foam it is made of actually will freeze if it gets too cold. The knock-off memory foam beds do not freeze, and aren't as heat sensitive, or at least that is what I have read and experienced. I get hot when I'm sleeping too and haven't had any problems with my bed, even sleeping under a huge comforter and blankets.

I'm looking at this one from Select Foam, but I'm worried that it won't be as good as Tempurpedic. Plus, I don't know if there's store around here that carries it. We want to try it out before we buy.
