Default september 11 didn't even twig

i moused over my little task bar this morning to check the date for whatever reason.... lots of times today... didn't actually make any connection between the date and 'september 11'.

what does this mean? does it mean that 7 years is the magic number? it only twigged when they talked about it on the radio.

is it because i'm way down here? or is it that a lot of people are moving on? i don't know... it used to be that 911 would freak me out every year for copycat reasons. this year it hasn't crossed my mind until 4.05pm.

maybe it's not 911 in your end of the world yet.

I had a strong reaction to it the a few weeks ago when I scheduled something and saw that it was on 9/11. That sick-sad tummy feeling. The image of people jumping from the buildings is burned into my mind.

The newspaper I work on had its issue date as 9/11 this year. Felt so weird, to call people and ask if they wanted to put ads in for our 9/11 issue.

Since tomorrow is Patriot Day, we are celebrating by going bowling as an office. Weird.

Actually, tonight at dinner I was reading the New York Times and there was an article about some of the severely disfigured survivors of 9/11. I fucking cried into my udon while reading it.

Yeah, I think after seven years people are starting to move on. Of course those directly affected will never be completely whole again - families of those who died, etc. But at some point life goes on. It was one of the worst days of my life and I think it was the day that the last vestige of American independence died. So that tragedy will always be there, but you absorb it and go on with life.

Since that day I've lived in another country, loved and lost, been through a divorce, found my soulmate, changed careers, lived in several different cities, travelled, found my identity... a lot can happen in seven years. In seven more years we'll have an entire generation of teens who don't even remember seeing the second plane go into the building or the people jumping from the windows. They'll watch an old movie like Ghostbusters and not choke up when they see the WTC. It'll be just another "on this day in history."

    Back on topic......

It's been on my mind since my life was affected by the results of it....I don't want this thread to veer into Political Poo territory, though.

It's been a sad and serious 7 years.

Older people I know talk sometimes about "where they were" when President Kennedy died. I've started to notice people talking like this about 9/11. Most people I know were asleep, since I'm on the west coast. Actually, most of the people I know who were awake when the first plane hit were high school athletes who were awake for practice. I was getting ready for cheerleading practice when my dad had me come to the t.v. and told me what had happened. At practice we all huddled around the radio the whole time.

I didn't see any of the original images-I was homeschooled at the time.

my mom took me and my sister to my piano lesson, and my teacher was crying and preparing to leave. She told my mom, and my mom told us. By the time we saw the news, it was past the "original footage" stage, and to the "one or two photos or short clips" and political aftermath.

I don't really feel like it "defines" anything. It is what we make of it. And some of the political objectives accomplished since hten, in its name, to me FAR overshadow the actual event.

I had just given birth to my son several weeks earlier. I remember seeing it on the news and thinking "Oh God..." It was stressful to watch. I can't even imagine what the folks who were there were going through.

OMG! I nearly totally missed my stripper anniversary!

Yes, I started my first ever night as a stripper at Santa Fe Gold, Surfers Paradise on the night of 9/11. Actually, it's tomorrow strangely enough as it was 12th September for me at the time.

I remember that whole day like it was yesterday.

I remembered it. There are a lot of shows of Foxtel (Aussie cable tv) to do with 9/11 which have been on last night and tonight.

I remember it well. I was up late as usual watching the late night news from the US and I watched it unfold. I went into my parents room to wake them up and tell them when the tower had collapsed. They were half asleep and didn't realise the seriousness of it.

My cousins went to NY a year or two ago and had photos of ground zero. Very depressing and disturbing.

I had the same situation. I woke up for zero period cheer practice and the TVs were on in the house. I thought "this is weird" and then as we waited for practice to start the second plane hit. I thought "oh crap". Then I went to mountains of Afghanistan where Osama planned it... I always thought about 9/11 when I looked at the mountain range in Kandahar.

Every year there is a memorial near my home, I went this morning and there was no memorial, I asked why not and a woman told me that the station who does it had to cut it from their budget, made me sad

I rememebr getting frantic calls at work, my brother coming in my office telling me to go home, and he was going to get my nephew from school, my boss telling me to get in the car and he would drive me home and on my way home looking at all the smoke because the 2nd building came down. I remember helicopters, fighter jets zooming above us, and people in the street screaming "why? please no! and random names" and crying

I got to my moms and hugged her so hard it seemed like for an eternity but I didn't want to let go. I kept calling people but all circuits were busy. That day will forever be with me. I wish peace to all of those who lost their life that horrid day and hope the ones who caused it are suffering tremendously. I hope their families are well, those poor families who just watched with out being able to do anything but just watch and to the heroes who sacrificed their all to help strangers.

That pain, that horrid pain of watching people jump to their deaths and to those on the planes that called their loved ones thinking they were going to be well but were lied to. I am so sorry for anyone who lost a loved one on this day.

WE remember the birthday of a president, we take off for Columbus day I think having a day to rememebr one of the most heartbreaking days in US history isn't much to ask.

New York, my hometown, was pretty much changed forever after 9/11, and that's a sad thing to me. I got really lucky that, of all the grownups I knew in NY, all the relatives and friends' parents, I didn't lose anyone. I almost did, but not quite. My friend's mom, a TimeLife employee of 25 or 30 years, happened to be working from home that day, but she lost everyone, all her coworkers, people she'd known for decades. My very best friend's dad who worked for Chase (not in the towers but elsewhere in the plaza) called me after evacuating, while walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. The phone lines were all tied up that day, even cell phones, and he couldn't get through to his daughter or his wife, so he went down the list and called me, told me to call my friend, tell her he was fine. I couldn't get her on the phone either right away but when I did she wept and wept because she was so sure that she'd lost her father that she was shapeless, hysterical at first and then just so relieved. Both she and I were in college in DC at the time which was, of course, also in a state of disaster, but a comparatively lesser one.

Anyway I'd not be surprised if there was some truth behind all the conspiracy grumblings about 9/11, but for the purposes of my memory, it doesn't matter much.

And hey Naut, thanks for starting this thread.

I think it means more if you live here (in NYC area, PA and DC) than if you live far away and it was images. I think that's a healthy and necessary thing to move beyond it.

We talked about it last night and every now and then I still have nightmares about it. I lived in Jersey City, literally down the street from the towers and they chose my city to hold the bodies in Liberty State Park (adjoined to the Statue of Liberty's park). I remember oversleeping my trip to Chinatown that morning and that kept my black ass off the PATH train when I normally would have gone. I commuted at 5 am coming from work and I remember the guys who worked my newstand five stories down who would keep me company and let me read the magazines until my train came. I realize they probably didn't make it out. I remember the beautiful mall in the towers complex that I loved to shop at and the financial specialist I dated who worked in the towers. Lastly I remember walking through the Village a week later and seeing the shell-shocked looks and fliers EVERYWHERE looking for missing people. It broke my heart because you just knew most of them weren't missing and the people could accept they were dead.

Last night we drove on one of the mountains with a view of the skyline and NOPE, it still wasn't there. Pretty crushing.

I was skipping my first class that morning, I had slept in.
I wandered over to my computer and got an instant message immediately to turn my TV on from this guy i was talking to at the time.

I watched it all alone in my apartment. I saw the second plane hit.... I remember feeling paralyzed and like a sitting duck since i was in a high rise.

The day before my long distance had been turned off my phone for failure to pay and i couldn't get in touch with my parents. (They live about an hour from the city i was in) I ran downstairs and bought a phone card and called them and my dads secretary came and picked me up.
My brother lived in NYC at the time with his wife and we couldn't get a hold of them. My brother watched it all happen from his apartment, he saw people jumping, I still tear up at the memories of seeing him the first time after it all happened. He looked old and weathered and defeated.

I remember the Challenger explosion. We were actually watching it in school, sitting in a dark classroom. I couldn't believe my little grade school eyes. Horrible.

Please take any political chatter out of here and into MB; there will be no further discussion of the U.S. government and who is or isn't a conspiracy theorist in this thread.

It was a bad, bad, scary day, and I am glad that seven years down the road, it was an isolated incident.

Oh yeah, Challenger. That fucked me up. For as long as I can remember when I was little, I wanted to be an astronaut, and Christa McAuliffe was my hero. I watched her go up in smoke when I was six and that was the end of my childhood innocence right there.
