Default How long can you go without power?

As I am sitting here realizing that I have not had power for 11 days in south louisiana heat......and might be 10 more...
I wonder how long people have been without power (at some point in your lives)....How long do you think you could live with out power in 90 degree weather....what would you do to entertain yourself?

Shit!! Not long at all. Everytime our power goes out (temporarily) i keep going to use appliances, forgetting that u need power to use them. I just take it for granted.

I think if it was hot and I didn't have power I'd go to the beach and swim.

Years ago in Melbourne there was an incident called the Longford gas explosion in which there was an explosion at a gas plant and a man who worked there died. We were without gas for a couple of weeks. Our water is heated by gas so many people including my family could only have cold showers. It was awful. We went to my cousins house a few times coz her water is heated electricly.

and see I was so excited because my dad lives around the corner from me.....he doesn't have power either but he has gas water heater....so we could take warm showers but after hauling limbs to the street all day (he lost about 20 trees at least 4ft in diameter) all you wanted is a cold shower.....

We were without power for 12 days after Hurricane Wilma. Sucked...but at least we have gas so we could take hot showers and cook on the stovetop. Everyone dragged their grills out to the driveway and had a big block party for days with friends bringing over frozen foods to cook that didnt have grills or gas ranges. Wouldnt have been so bad if my moron neighbors hadnt had their LOUD ASS generator running 24/7. You had to have all windows open in order to breathe because there was no A/C or anything and the noise and fumes from their generator made sleeping impossible.

I swear if it ever happens again I'm putting sugar in the generators gastank. 24/7 is just ridiculous..esp if it is interfering with the lives of your neighbors. Fucking assholes.

In 90 degree humid weather, I’d probably last no more than a week. Now in 70-80 degree dry weather I could probably go quite a long time. Maybe a few months before it made me grumpy. I don’t mind cold showers too much. I love reading, I play the piano and don’t need power to pole dance or do my most of other workouts so I am quite sure I could keep myself and M entertained. Now feeding him might be a challenge but me, I could do fine without having refrigerated or frozen foods.

I was without power for 9 days in December of 1995. I just moved all my stuff from my fridge to my garage.

It was cold and miserable. We didn't have a fireplace or anything. I lived in my sleeping bag, basically. We cooked on a small propane stove. It totally sucked. Luckily it wasn't super duper cold or anything, it was like 30-40 most of the days we were without power.

I couldn't get a hotel room because of money, and I couldn't stay with relatives because of my cats. So I just stuck it out and used friends houses to shower and warm up when I wasn't at work.

During Hurricane Katrina I was deployed to New Orleans for the Disaster Relief. I spent 2 months living on a cot on the second floor of a parking garage. No power, no running water, no entertainment. It wasn't this bad for Kosovo or the Middle East. At least there was power and AC and all that jazz there. Hurricane Katrina was the bleh...

Lots of Baby-Wipe Baths (Field Showers) and Dominos... I've perfected my domino dominance though.

In February 1994 there was an ice storm in Memphis. The storm was pretty uneventful itself (although there were some great stories); I woke up about 5:30 am and the power was out, and then when the sun came up we realized that everything outside was coated thickly in ice. We had a whole tree floating in our swimming pool, pulled down by the weight of the ice, and a lot of power lines went down. The whole city was out of power.

In some areas the power came back in a couple of days; in some areas it took almost a month. We were out of power for about two and a half weeks. It wasn't bad at all for me. We had a fireplace to keep warm by, and we had a lot of family time huddled around the fire together just laughing and talking and playing games. We cooked outside on the grill or made tinfoil packets to put in the fire. We had a kerosene lamp if we needed to get around at night. Our water heater was gas, so I had a hot bath every couple of days. After the first day or two, the weather was really nice for February so we played games outside and visited friends. If I got bored in the day, I read a book.

I was actually a little sad when the power came back on.

Ick. We had no power for 2 weeks a couple summers ago due to a huge storm. Ameren UE put us and half of the rest of the lower middle-class population of STL on low priority and we suffered through it. Then, in Dec. (same year) we were without for another week because of an ice storm and Ameren's incompetence. We had one more minor one in there too.

It sucks. I'm spoiled though and get bored really easy. Me and my mom went the WalMart and bought a couple big puzzles and sat there with camping lanterns.

Yeah, during Rita, we moved north to Alexandria where I stayed in some plywood buildings that reminding me strongly of Chicken Coups... I awoke to 2' of Water under my cot... glad I was smart enough to realize a HURRICANE was coming and put my stuff up off the floor... lots of floating goodies were gently bumping into cots to the chagrin of many.

During Hurricane Season 2005, I went without electricity for five days. Which wasn't that bad compared to some parts of South Florida that went without for two to three weeks. It was one of those several storms that hit us that year. There were so many that year that I don't remember which storm it was. It think it was Hurricane Wilma.

The cold showers were awful. You have to put water in your bathtub and a couple of drops of bleach. This is your bathing water. You want to make sure you do this before the hurricane because when the electricity begins to work again and the water pumps are back on after the hurricane, this water is not consumable. For a couple of days, your water will work but you will have to boil it before you bath in it because you can get sick.

The only phones that worked were the land line, house phones with the curly extension cords connecting it to the cradle. These usually worked during the day but not at night. All of the cell phone towers were down.

The nights are super dark and scary with the whole neighborhood at a dead silence. This silence is completely different from just a quiet night. It's a very eerie silence. So, at night you use flashlights and light candles which really suck in 90 degree weather because the candles give off heat and the batteries give off heat. It is hot as hell. And if you live in a one-story ranch-style house, you can't open the windows or doors at night due to potential robberies and vandalism. People get desperate or crazy.

And it pisses you off because you know that one of your shows is on tv or that you want to check your e-mail but NOBODY has electricity.

Anyway, we bought a generator on the fourth day without electricity, however we did not have any gasoline to run the generator with. So, on the fifth day we sat in the car on a gas line (spanning several blocks away from the gas station - one of the only gas stations with a generator to pump gas) for most of the day to get gasoline to run our generator. That evening, the gas station ran out of gasoline and we went back home to go to bed. The next day, early in the morning we got on another gas line and this time we were successful. It was about mid-afternoon. We finally get home, eat, and just before we start fueling the generator, THE ELECTRICITY TURNS ON!!!!!!!!! All that time on those stupid gas lines!!! Irony...

We had to throw out all of our food in the freezer and refrigerator.

Note: Fill all your cars with gas. Get a generator ahead of time and fill as many of those red plastic gas cans before the hurricane hits. Some gas stations, that are hooked up with a generator, will have a limit on how many gas cans you can fill.

    -got generator, 20 gas cans
-showers, no bath tub...but always did that growing up
-waited in all the lines, still waiting in them
    - car got smashed and blocked into drive way by trees sooo gas in it did no good
    - curfew in town is the most annoying because the club can't open even if its got power

I've been very lucky in this regard because the worst I can remember isn't even 72 hours.

We had the ice storm from hell here last December and several people in town here were without power for up to 4 weeks. I lost it for about two hours. It was just a matter of where you were.

Wow. I start getting really irritable after 1 hour.

After that F5 tornado that blew through Oklahoma City back in....98, my parents house was without for 5 days. 5 days!!!! Luckily I had my own apartment by then. But I was without for a day or two. It was awful. I NEED power.

I lived without power for 3 months on a course I took. And I definitely clicked on this thread so I could boast about that. However, in the context of a normal life, it would aggravate me to no end to lose power for an extended period of time. I don't think I've ever been without power in the frontcountry for more than 2 days at a stretch, and the most recent time was in NY while I was visiting my parents about 2... ish? years ago. There were some brownouts in Queens, maybe Brooklyn too, on and off for a few weeks. It sucked because it's congested and hot as hell in my parents' apartment, and my dad hates to take mass transit, and the car was trapped in the garage, so I basically just sat there for 2 listless days, listening to my dad make inane guesses at the relative humidity. Every now and again he'd go scout out a head of lettuce or a box of donuts. My mom was smart and worked overtime so she could be in her air-conditioned Manhattan office, but I had nowhere to go in particular, so I just sat and melted.

I feel for you, girl. I hope your power comes back on soon!
Drought was over. Where was I? Drinks were on the house.

When I evacuated for Gustav we had no power and were on a generator for about two or three days. I lost count. I was totally miserable, and that was with a generator. I'd have to just got get a hotel room in another city for much longer than that. I was starting to feel insane being cooped up like that.
