    Default 5-HTP confusion

After reading numerous posts about 5-HTP, I'm confused as to whether this is an energy and mood booster or a sleep aid. Some people say that this is good to take before you go to sleep, while others say that taking it in the morning after you did NOT get a good night's sleep will help you throughout the day. So which one does it do?

Also, is it really an appetite suppressant if you take 50 mgs at a time (3x/day), or is that more if you take like 300 mgs/day?

Is it bad to take while drinking alcohol?

I was interested in taking it but won't because it says not to use it if you have been diagnosed with anorexia nervosa....it seems like it might also have some cardiovascular side effects too... Here's what I found :

5 HTP is available without prescription and is generally considered safe and may be beneficial to many individuals. Contraindications to 5 HTP use or conditions under which 5 HTP use should only be under the supervision of a physician are conditions in which increased serotonin levels may be harmful:

Cardiovascular Diseases (high blood pressure, post-stroke, post-heart attack)
    Extremely Elderly Persons
those with Parkinsons Disease, Cancer or Autoimmune Diseases (Scleroderma, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus)
    Lung Diseases
    Chronic Alcoholism
    Liver diseases (hepatitis or cirrhosis)
    parasitic infection
    AIDS
    Anorexia Nervosa
    Low protein Diets
    Allergies (severe)
Myalgia (persistent pain and weakness of the muscles)
Peripheral Neuropathy (pain weakness of the muscles)
    Rash or Flushing
    Edema
    Nausea
    Diarrhea
    Sickle cell anemia
    Hemophilia
    Pregnancy
Concurrent drug use: 5 HTP should not be used if taking:

    Anti-depressant drugs
    Monoamine oxidase inhibitors
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's e.g., Prozac)
    Tricyclic medications
    Weight Loss medications (i.e., dextenfluramine)
    Anti-parkinson medications (e.g., L-dopa)
    Barbiturates and other tranquilizing drugs
    Antihistamines and cold medications
    Alcoholic beverages
    Intravenous (illegal I.V.) drugs
    Cancer chemotherapy or
    Antibiotic Medications
Alcohol and 5-HTP should not be taken together. Allow at least six hours between use of alcohol and 5 HTP.

Warning: 5 HTP can increase the effect of some tranquilizing drugs.

It is very much not a good idea to take it before sleeping. It can help you sleep -- if you take it when you wake up, your body will produce more melatonin on its own later in the day. Someone said that in another thread, I think, but in a confusing sentence order so it looked like they were recommending it to take when sleeping.

Pretty much everything out there warns you against taking it if you're about to drop dead from something. Look at the sign on a hot tub sometime!

The anorexia warning is because, like some other antidepressant-type medicines, it can have appetite suppressant effects for some people. Not for all people, but if it has this effect for you and you have an eating disorder, there's a risk of abuse.

It should definitely not be taken with SSRIs, MAOIs, etc, unless under a doctor's supervision, but there's no real reason to avoid it with dopamine-affecting medications or with antihistamines, to the best of my knowledge.

thx for the clarification! i took a capsule last night (100 mgs), about 4 hrs before I went to bed. i started to get a pretty bad headache and felt a little sedated. the headache didn't go away, but i then felt normal instead of sedated. i'm about to take another one now...so hopefully no headache.

    i didn't really feel a mood-boost....but i hear that can a couple of days...

    Well... sorry to disagree...

it is often marketed as a sleep aid as well as a natural mood lifter. I've worked in health food stores for years, and while ALL things can affect people's body's differently in ways you wouldn't expect (so yeah, it can give you more energy, just like I've had plenty of people say melatonin makes them hyper), it is sometimes marketed as a sleep aid. From everything I've read and my own personal usage, I recommend you use it before bed or it might make you sleepy during the day. If it doesn't then by all means use it whenever you want.

Nevermind, I just found some companies that suggest using it during the day. I personally use it at night...

Hmm -- perhaps some of your bodies produce melatonin from serotonin faster? I can't speak for others' personal experiences. I can say that in any case, it's good to start with no more than 50 mg, ideally, until you know how it affects you.
