    Default Hurricane Ike

I hope everyone in the potentially affected areas stays safe! It's so crazy here right now. People are freaking out. The freeways are jammed, gas stations have lines out the street and the grocery stores are madhouses. It took me almost 45 minutes to get some bottled water at HEB!

    Be careful everyone!

Ugh I know! All of the gas stations in my area have been sold out of gas since 1pm. I have such a headache after dealing with the mass hysteria of HEB and Wal-Mart.

Do you think the club will close tomorrow? Saturday? I wouldn't bother going in, just curious as to how they'd handle it.

I don't know. I planned on working tomorrow too. Just seeing people in The Woodlands hoard food and water like it's the apocalypse or WWIII makes me shake my head. At the very worst we're going to get strong winds and lots of rain.

Yha Austin isn't even taking in evacuees because we could get it so bad. Actually I don't even live as far north as Austin, I hope my car doesn't get smashed by a broken tree or something.

Wait it looks like the storm is more east that I thought it was. Maybe I won't see this storm after all.

Yep. I just watched the 10 'o clock news and we're going to be fine. Just lots of wind and rain from what the weatherman said. That all can change though. If I were in Galveston or Beaumont I definitely would though. I hope Corgan's gonna be okay.

i'm staying, riding it out. the part of beaumont i live in is RIGHT on the outskirts of another county which was not called for any evacuation. voluntary, but that's not a threat. i will be fine, although i may be eating tuna out of a can and SW-less for who knows how long... i remember when rita hit we couldn't come home for a month!!! oh well... after evacuating for nothing with gustav, i don't have the patience to evac for this one.

    <3

ps: people are crazy... getting in wrecks over a spot at the gas station, canned goods... ai yi yii! i went to my natural food section and got some amy's soups and annie's raviolis, there was more than enough natural cannned goods! i guess fatty mc fattersons would rather have sugary breads and syrupy canned peaches.

mini rant here: people, why the fuck are you buying sugar and lunchmeat??? not to mention eggs. we will lose power and you are gonna look dumb. the end.

...it will be interestingly (sad) to see Galveston destroyed again. The 1900 hurricane (125mph) killed 6000 people in Galveston and wiped out the entire island infrastructure at that time. This event holds the record as the United States' deadliest natural disaster. Galveston was the port hub of Texas at that time and that event caused all the new port infrastructure to be built up in Houston's bay which hindered Galveston's growth and propelled Houston to become the fourth largest city in America.

The island is full of older 40+ year old wood frame homes. I imagine it will look like the flooded wards in New Orleans. Galveston was trying to make a comeback as an entertainment city with a recent surge in construction. Unlike New Orlean's surprise, Galveston has time and has been evacuating quite well.

Its friday 9:00AM.... water is hitting the seawall now and streets are flooding on the low end of the island. The storm is 18 hours from the island. Winds in Houston are about 5 mph with mostly clear skys, 80 degreees. Houston is 70 feet above sea level so the 20 foot surge will never reach Houston except in the bay area. Most of Houston is about 30+ miles from Galveston and winds in Houston should be 50-85 mph. Like Corgan said, Beaumont should be be OK with similar winds. I'm guessing 50% destruction on the island.

Spec's liquor store is doing brisk business.

We had to cancel all of our Houston area parties for this weekend. At least one dancer was upset because she really needs the cash, but what can ya do? None of the customers had a problem with the cancellations.

I hope everyone stays safe and that the reports of how bad it's gonna be are wrong and that everything passes without much incident.
