    Default friends of bill w.??

Hi - i'm a veteran dancer in florida (new to SW)- wondering if there are any girls out there that are in recovery.

I'm sober 4 yrs now and recently went back to stripping after a 6 yr. hiatus- its a WHOLE NEW WORLD!

I'm doin ok- working smarter, but sometimes wish i could talk to someone about what it's like.

I dont share w anyone in AA about being a dancer because I live in a small town, am a business owner, and basically just fear the judgement-

    can anyone out there relate??

    best, Heather- Florida

I've been sober for six years and have danced throughout. I am happy to talk about it. In fact, I'd be happy to start our own google group or something. I doubt there's stripper and sex worker only AA meetings.

I thought AA was all about anonymity, so why would it matter if you're a dancer or not?

I have a friend who has been sober for 4 years now and dances, she's been able to do it. She's said she's had a hard time with guys offering to buy her drinks and not wanting to take no for an answer, but she tells them that she's in AA and a majority of the time they're cool with it. If they're not, then don't bother with them.

Everyone in our club knows her situation and respects her decision, they ones that do do stuff don't do it around her.

It's a hard road to travel, being in recovery and dancing, but it can be done.

^^ if she's in a small town, she's probably going to meetings with people she sees outside of there. Even if they did keep her anonymity, they would know and she might feel weird about that -- of course, that's just my guess. Also, they really frown on, um, working in bars. Go figure.

Just came back from my favourite Saturday meeting. (it has cozy chairs, people knit, we drink coffee, there's a dog, etc.).

Personally, I prefer to talk to other recovering addicts or friends of bill and bob about the recovery thing - I find unless you're in it, not necessarily in some anonymous 12-step group, but unless you do any kind of recovery/post-trauma/sobriety program you have no idea about how refreshing, frustrating, aching and fanfuckingtastic "the journey" is. And how crazy the first two years are. Fuck this is nuts!! I love it!!

    /cheese!
//yeah, a recovering alcoholic stripper native, how's that for a stereotype?

I love being sober and working- all the things I've learned and all the ways I've changed have made dancing much easier and more fun. It was sooo hard though, and support is worth it's weight in gold- without my friends's support, theres no way I would still be sober, even with meetings. I'm lucky to be in a large city, so I was able to find a meeting place where everyone accepts me for who I am, but I have been to some meetings where you have to "fit in" . Best meeting ever was on a cruise ship, damn, we're everywhere! The past 2 1/2 years since I got sober have been the happiest yet

    PM me anytime!

I never went the AA route, but I have been sober since January 2008. Nine months and counting! Working in the club was not nearly as daunting as I thought. Seeing other girls get wasted and act like idiots (and customers alike!), REALLY encourages me to stay sober!

It's like any job you can't get much done drunk. Save the binge for after work. If you have kids try not to drink in front of them because then they may think this is all part of being grown up. I don't know if everyone can buy into the 12 steps doesn't it have a bunch of religious bs involved?

Hi Heather. Welcome to SW. You'd be surprised how many sober girls are here. I didn't tell people I was a dancer either. A few people know. Some of my close friends. My sponsor knows (she didn't approve at all, but she did say it's not her decision, and even though she was happy when I stopped, she didn't pressure me at all. Her job was to take me through the steps, not run my life). I haven't told any sponsees either. It's not an issue now since I'm not dancing right now, but when I was I felt super uncomfortable.

If anyone I didn't want to know ever found out, I think most people would be respectful. If someone talked shit behind my back, I have a lot of people who would stand up for me and tell them to STFU.

Anyone who judges me b/c I have stripped isn't really practicing love and tolerance. If someone gave me shit I would call them on it. I don't see how anyone can crawl into the rooms and then once they get a little better start judging anyone.
