    Default What to get newborns

Ok......so I know I'm early for Christmas, but, I'm starting to put lists together of who gets what, etc....

anyways I have a nephew (10 weeks old), and I'm not sure what to get him.

Clothes and stuffed animals are kinda out of the picture as he has been swampped from friends and family.....

I was thinking stock/bonds.. (like Hasbro, Toy R Us, etc),....any other suggestions for gifts?

    Thanks

I don't know what your budget is, but I love Tiffany & Co.'s gifts for babies.

I think that gift cards to Build a Bear workshop are always cool because that's a fun day for mom and baby alike.....

How about t-bills? These are great savings vehicles for college.

Oh! Don't buy Toys-R-Us stocks. That company is on the verge of failure.

Well really a baby of that age doesn't care what they get, so you are either buying for the parents or, I guess if you are serious about buying stocks, for the future little man.

If you are buying for the parents then a gift card is the way to go, speaking as a parent.

If you are buying for the little man in the future then your idea sounds pretty good!

Its more about the mother though, see personally I would be happy with nothing for my newborn, save your generosity until they care, I actually read you OP as SOCKS/bonds, and I thought, yeah those little Bonds socks are cute, good idea. Lol. But thats just me. I'm not a big presents at Christmas type.

I'd think practical and get a gift card to a place where the parents could get necessities like diapers, formula, etc.

    Thanks,

dad is a yuppie and basically has the basics covered already....though the giftcard may not be a bad idea as the little-guy is really a big little-guy, he's in the 90 percentile in height.....so he may be outgrowing things quicker than anticipated.

I'll buy him a little something....but again, at 6 months, what does he really "need" at that age...

If you get a gift card get a simon visa card or something similar that they can use anywhere. It's so annoying getting giftcards bound to a specific store when a visa one is just as easy to get and is universal.

Unless you ask the parent what the baby needs, it's kindda hard to know. I hope when I have a baby people just give me giftcards and let me figure it out on my own rather than telling multiple people what I need and getting lots of the same thing or stuff that doesn't fit...way too much hassle.

I like the savings/bonds idea - being a mom. Hes little - they have everything hes going to need for the next year Im sure! Toys, clothes, whatever. Gift card - well, if mom and dad have the necessities covered then thats unneeded. I hate receiving gift cards - I always feel its laziness - esp for kids - theyre easy to buy for

I think your original plan is a great idea! Maybe not Toys R Us but there are other companies out there.

Being a mom...? The best gifts were the practical ones, the rest went aside!
Diapers, sincerely! You CAN NOT have enough.
Baby washcloths, baby wash, make a gift basket with all that kinda stuff in it - ITS ABSOLUTELY the best gift!

I got way too many clothes and she grew faster than she could wear it all!

Or, if you DO wanna buy outfits buy for LATER, like when the kid is a year, most people buy the age appropriate size and then you have 3 dozen outfits in 6 months range and nothing else!

PLUS, if you DO buy an outfit for a later age count the months and figure out the SEASON of the outfit - if he/she will be one year old in the summer - dont buy a one year old snowsuit - know what I mean? That was a detail not thought of when I got clothes for her at a later age - they didnt calculate the season at that age!

But again, stick to the practical stuff - I was so happy for all that stuff the most.

To be honest I was thinking things kids like......and perhaps Mircrosoft, hasbro, insert kid themed companies here.....ones that have upside ofcourse....

giftcards seem a little too easy,.....

also the idea of putting money into an education fund is good, I don't know if mom and dad have started that yet....

Yea, whomever you think is good. Hasbro was a good one. Its not necessarily the fact that it will grow and be worth a ton when hes older. Its that you put great thought into a gift, didnt take the cheap way out and knew that diapers, etc are horrible Christmas gift ideas.

Where is the fun for ANYONE (even a mom) opening a pack of diapers on Christmas. Uhm, no. Not even when they have a need for them. Im gathering mom and dad can easily cover the costs of child rearing. I mean, I dont care if Im living paycheck to paycheck - I do not want diapers for christmas.

LOL, are you a mom Audrey Leigh?

I didnt mean JUST diapers but diapers as part of a whole 'care' pkged theme. I suppose I should have listed the million and one things that would go into such a package for those who need the blanks filled in such as yourself. Those that would FOCUS on one item such as diapers...then make a whole big thing out of it.
    Secondly;
I dont live paycheque to paycheque so your insinuation of such is absurd. In fact I have so far taken several YEARS off raising my child living on my investments LOL, so there blows your weak uninformed attack based assumptions.

Now relax and just answer the OP and dont look for shit to pick apart it make you look petty.

Look, first of all - I had no clue if you were a mom or not and did not say anything about you living check to check so get over it. All of those things they already have Im sure. Everyone has diapers. Everyone has formula (what if shes breastfeeding?) everyone HAS all that crap (blankets, socks, whatever else) and I stand by my thoughts that its a horrible gift idea.

Now relax and just answer the OP and dont look for shit to pick apart it make you look petty.
WTF is THAT supposed to mean? I said I, PERSONALLY think its a horrible idea. YOU are entitled to YOUR opinion. No need to be a fucking bitch and think you know everything. Which takes me back to your question - am I a mom. Oh, that must be you assuming Im not and I dont know shit.....

Well, I am a mom. My husband makes plenty and I dont need a care package - it would actually be insulting me that they think I cannot afford the basics of having a baby. <--- because thats the first thing I would think when I opened the babys gift and it was a "care package". So get your nose out of the air and stop making assumptions that my input is not valid whereas yours is. OK, thank you.

I don't think Audrey was saying anything about you. I think you read very well-meaning posts a little defensively sometimes, like the time you insinuated that I thought you were calling me ghetto. I was really joking and you took it seriously. I just let it slide because I don't want to fight with people on here, but I want let you know that I am seeing a pattern. Just because someone disagrees with you, they are not "attacking" you or trying to make a personal example of your situation. I just thought I'd mention that with the hopes that this and any possible future arguments might be lessened. I'm not taking sides, but making an observation.

Back on topic, I think the best choice for newborn gifts should be based on the financial means of the family. I liked having gift cards because we were poor and needed basics. Someone with more money might like more creative gifts like fancy diaper bags or a nice antique changing table.

I'll tell ya what has saved my back though, it's the . My dude and I practiced a lot of babywearing and this really came in handy. I'd buy one for any new mom.

And hands down, makes the best bottles, which are compatible with breastfeeding and are made with safe plastic and silicone. I LOVE THEM and will never use any other kind again.

i agree with the gift card ideas, specifically joplin's general gift card concept (visa/mastercard) to allow the parents the ease of shopping. only they know what they really need after the dust settles.

an elegant amex gift certificate (w/box or gift envelope) is nice too but costs a little bit more.

i don't like getting store specific gift cards with all the store closings/bankruptcies that wipe out card values 100%.

How about a gift certificate or a photo session.
I also like wooden toys as they are a classic, and are safe for when the baby gets older. There are also really great monogrammed items (especially since he's a boy and his initials will never change) that can last a lifetime. There's also a really cute etiquette book with tableware called- Munchkin Manners -for when he gets older. A silver plated tooth fairy box- for when he gets older, or a sterling silver rattle, spoon, piggy bank- for now. Bookends, a great toy chest, the list goes on and on. New moms always say they need diapers.
On a side note-For my sil, for her shower, we had a diaper raffle, and along with their gift, each person who brought diapers was entered into a raffle where my mil gave away several gifts. She got like 30+ bags/boxes diapers. Babiesrus seems to be the cheapest place to buy Pampers, as the moms I know like them best if you go that route.

Gift cards from Target or Wal-mart always seem appreciated. Even my NYC snooty friends like Target.

Or "Tar-shey" as the case may be...lol!

Any time I get a baby a gift, I always aim to buy them stuff they'll need for when they are older...like sippy cups, 2T clothes, etc.

Books, sun shields for cars, or musical baby toys are always good.

Don't get him Tickle-Me Elmo though. My son hated him and cried every time we made him laugh. So we had to ditch Elmo.

OH and for the parents, perhaps a gift certificate to a movie theater & restaurant and a handmade coupon offering your babysitting services for one night would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, I've done that too when it's someone I'm close to, like my cousin's kids. Like, I'll buy a dress slightly older/bigger than they need. And I love buying them books too.
