Default Wal Mart discourages employees from voting Democrat?

    Wow!

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1217..._us_whats_news

    [snip]

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is mobilizing its store managers and department supervisors around the country to warn that if Democrats win power in November, they'll likely change federal law to make it easier for workers to unionize companies -- including Wal-Mart.

In recent weeks, thousands of Wal-Mart store managers and department heads have been summoned to mandatory meetings at which the retailer stresses the downside for workers if stores were to be unionized.

According to about a dozen Wal-Mart employees who attended such meetings in seven states, Wal-Mart executives claim that employees at unionized stores would have to pay hefty union dues while getting nothing in return, and may have to go on strike without compensation. Also, unionization could mean fewer jobs as labor costs rise.

The actions by Wal-Mart -- the nation's largest private employer -- reflect a growing concern among big business that a reinvigorated labor movement could reverse years of declining union membership. That could lead to higher payroll and health costs for companies already being hurt by rising fuel and commodities costs and the tough economic climate.

The Wal-Mart human-resources managers who run the meetings don't specifically tell attendees how to vote in November's election, but make it clear that voting for Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama would be tantamount to inviting unions in, according to Wal-Mart employees who attended gatherings in Maryland, Missouri and other states.

On one hand, the company is trying to look out for it's best interest. ON the other hand, they are still trying to dick their employees. I think unions are fine when they are needed but they aren't so great when they are not. My husband has a non-union job but they treat the employees well enough that it's not a necessity. Walmart has a record of mistreating their employees though. This will be interesting. I'm going to see how this plays out.

I worked for a law firm when I was 19 that represented Wal-Mart. They would give their employees no compensation when they were injured. There were so many files of cases of employees that had horrible injuries. Wal-Mart didn't pay their medical bills or give them any injury compensation, and when people sued Wal-Mart rarely lost.

    Wal-Mart is truly evil.

    I thought it was obvious.

Unions have PACs and make endorsements. Why can't Wal-Mart ?

OK, now you're bringing up another point. I didn't say Wal-Mart couldn't make an endorsement. I thread jacked to tell my personal experience seeing evidence of their evil.

Well, Wal-Mart has to look out for their best interests, but so do their employees. If big businesses are worried about people joining unions again, they only need to look at the seeds they've sown.

If I worked for Wal-Mart, I might vote for Obama just to piss them off for wasting my time with their propaganda. In my state, its not going to matter anyway.

And what is wrong with unions? Overall: A company or industry gets the unions it deserves. If employees are being mistreated then there is a high probability that a union will form. Wal-Mart cannot discrimate among its employees in regards to their desires to join a union, the only thing that Wal-Mart can do to prevent a union, without violating the National Labor Relations Act, is inform their employees of the down-side of being part of a unionized industry and joining a union. These meetings and seminars usually happens when management has already heard discussion of possible union formation, which essentially means that their employees do not feel they are being treated fairly. Do I smell strong employee dissatisfaction?
