    Default IUD

Does anyone have this or have had it? I'm thinking about getting back on birth control because I can't take the pain from my periods anymore, and the fact that I don't want to get pregnant. A few years back, I was on the shot just for this reason and was SOOO happy when I stopped getting my periods. But due to the fact that I had a problem with up and down weight gain, I got off of the shot. I've also tried the pill for a few months, but it made me really sick to the point where I was so sick that I couldn't eat. So I got off of that as well.

I was looking up info on the IUD, and it seems to be effective. I would rather have something where I don't have to worry about the hassle of remembering to take a pill everyday at the same time. Is this a better birth control then the shot or pill?

It can cause scarring, so only get it if you are 100% sure that you don't want kids. I didn't end up getting it only because I'm not 100% sure and I don't want to take that small risk.

Typically - you cannot get an IUD unless youve been pregnant. I had Mirena. Had headaches daily... took it out after only three months. Theres a thread about it somewhere around here. There are a LOT of IUD threads...

Whaaaa...?? umm, i know many women who want kids LATER and have IUD's.

I just got mine in August... other than light bleeding (it's gotten much better) and EVIL cramps the first two weeks, it's been fine...

But you're only 21. Many docs won't do it for women without children, esp. at your age.

^^ true. But - they want you to be in a steady relationship (or married) because the IUD keeps the cervix open which can lead to a higher instance of STDs, etc.

I had the copper one and I got pregnant a year after it was implanted, before that no problems what so ever except for a far heavier period.

I HATE it so much now because of what I personally went thorugh.
I know others have different results and I was told it was extremely effective, there is always a failure rate.

I am one of the rare failed IUD girls out there.

What a horrid experience for me personally.

At least for me Mirena has been heavensent! My nearly anemia healed itself to the point where I'm able to donate blood without any problems, just because I stopped bleeding like a faucet for several days per month. I don't miss my period pain-wise either. I can do whatever I want whenever I want without having to stop to think "what if my period starts / what if I leak".

I haven't had kids. I believe one can get an IUD at the age of 18 but then it's all about finding a doc who's willing to insert the thing to someone that young. I've met nurses who've steadily refused to insert it to anyone without kids, saying it will be unbelievably painful and the IUD will expel. Still my insertion was related to getting an ear pierced (when it comes to pain) and it's stayed there for more than half a year already.

I've heard about very rare cases where an IUD has somewhat gone through the cervical wall during insertion. I mentioned that to my doc and she was amazed how someone could possibly do that accidentally. So if you get someone who inserts them on a daily basis nothing should go wrong.

I can imagine spotting afterwards will be irritating if one has to work naked as tampons aren't recommended with IUDs. At least my doc has said that menstrual cups are safe to use with an IUD. Plus at least around here they sell those single-use individually-packed (terribly expensive) spongy tampons that don't have any string. (They are supposed to be used if one wants to have mess-free sex during their period, I recall.)

^Wow I am not the only one out there, its odd when it happens because your going along doing your thing and then boom your preggers, but kids are such a blessing anyways.

Everyone has to make the choice that is best for them and know the risks associated with what ever birth control they use.

I wish I had a switch that I could turn on when I want to get preggo and off when I dont....lol.

    Damn my love of sex

I wouldn't personally choose to have an IUD bc my doctor told me if you havent had children yet its extremely painful to insert and also it can perforate your Uterus. I wouldnt chance that. I would love to have a copper IUD, bc then there are no hormones but I dont want to take the risk or pain.

She didnt have an ectopic. The baby was in her uterus. I had an ectopic and I wouldnt wish that pain on my worst enemy (and it wasnt due to an IUD).

An ectopic pregnancy is when the baby attaches itself in your fallopian tube instead of your uterus. Since your fallopian tube is small it can rupture. It is the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. Mine didnt rupture but ectopic was very very painful and I was over the toilet throwing up from pain, couldnt move, legs wouldnt work, etc before I finally went to the ER. It was gradual tho, started as a lower back pain. The reason there is a risk of it with an IUD is because the IUD blocks your fallopian tube. You do not have an abortion with an ectopic (technically)... with my they removed my entire fallopian tube so I only have one. You cannot have a baby when it is in your fallopian tube - period. You cannot have an ectiopic baby. It will not grow, it will stop growing and die because there is no room for it to grow. There is a change of death if your tube ruptures due to hemeraging but the pain was so bad I didnt get that far in mine.

There is also methotrexate which will dissove the pregnancy to save your tube - unfortunately with me, 2 doses and i still needed surgery and lost my tube.

Alrighty then...I'll just see if I can get a lower dose for the shot. The IUD sounds kinda bad to me. And I've never had a baby, but I was pregnant before (had a miscarriage). Talking about an iud kinda scares me now.

He started laughing. Took it off and handed it to me. We had been fuck buddies for years so it didnt freak him out or anything. He thought it was as funny as I did.

    Hilarious!

So then it must not be all that great if it falls out...I don't want that problem...I would be so embarrassed I'll just try the shot again I guess.

XoticaDoll sorry if this is intrusive but does that mean that you didn't have an ectopic pregnancy? My doctor explained it as you're less likely to have an ectopic pregancy than someone not on paragaurd BUT thats because you're less likely to get pregnant period... if youdo get pregnant though chances are you'll have to get an abortion because the pregnancy will be ectopic... is this about right or should I be like WTF?
    No worries,
I had a regular good old "normal" pregnancy not an eptopic one.
Not much else to say except in my opnion it didnt work for me, it works for others and others are super happy with thier IUDs. Not me though

I've had my copper IUD in for about six months. I have heavier and more painful periods but it is so worth it for me! Better than childbirth - or hormones that turn me into a evil sex hating fat bitch lol

I LOVE my Mirena IUD. It's the only form of BC I can tollerate. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find the other thread(s) I've posted about it on. I'm on my second one now after have the first replaced after five years. I've never had kids.

I was thinking about getting an IUD and I told my mom. I said, "I can't wait to get insurance so I can go to the gyno more and so I can talk to him about an IUD." She told me (it must've been a long time ago cause she had a full hysterectomy 10 years ago due to endometriosis and some other bad shit) that a little bit after she had hers implanted she became really sick like 104 105 fever, horrible cramps, and like a river of blood. And my mom is the toughest woman I know so if she thinks an IUD is the worst pain and most horrible form of birth control I am going to havve to trust her because I know my body works pretty much the same as hers.
It might work for other people and I hope everyone in this thread has a good experience with their IUD, but I'm just not even going to try it and end up once again in the same position as my mom. I will stick with my little pink pills lol.

When I was 18 my doctor said I could have mirena if I wanted it. She said it'd be painful but doable, just to wait until I'm on my period again and come on in.

Almost 4 months later I still haven't had a period, so I'm waiting for that. I have no idea when it's going to come, but when it does I'll be down at the office waiting to get my mirena.

Also be advised that not all insurances cover it, or any part of it. I think mine is going to be like 700+ dollars because blueXblueshield won't cover a cent.

My mom said the same thing. But thats a different type of IUD than the Mirena. The Mirena was awesome (except for the headaches).
