What you want to do is get body art quality henna with NO OTHER ADDITIVES because they are usually scientific names for metallic salts, or cones or conditioners that prevent the henna from staying properly, and that's all you get at lush or the beauty supply.
Things to consider:
It's permanent. REALLY really permanent. Most stylists won't even touch it, let alone bleach it out.
Test on a bit of hair from your brush, esp. if you chemical dye. Green swamp hair ain''t pretty.
It thickens your hair considerably - is your hair already too thick?
IF you're okay with all that, I use hennaforhair.com as it is 100 percent henna with no additives. I love it, my hair is thick, shiny, and beautiful! Try to only redo the new growth when you do it, as it darkens the more you put on.
I use the red wine or lemon juice mix (it's all explained on the website) and use a rubber spatula and a couple chopsticks to apply. I leave mine for four hours, I'm naturally dark strawberry blonde/brown. Usually at an Indian grocery you can find ladies willing to apply it for not too expensive; mix and bring your own henna.
Don't make big plans the day after your henna; the color that you get needs to oxidize and turn less orange, which usually takes a day.
Before you henna wash your hair and do an apple cider vinegar rinse, three tablespoons to three cups of water. Pour through your hair and rinse out. This removes buildup on your hair so the henna can penetrate.
I love henna! It's so good for your hair, seals up splits, and makes it soooo thick and shiny.
Word of caution: ALWAYS tell your hairdressers if you use henna. It simply isn't compatible with most chemical dyes, relaxers, perms, etc, and they need to know.
