Default Moving to a new life

I want to move across the country, to LA. I don't know anyone there but I'm excited and I'm ready for a new life. How much money do you guys think I will need? Just to be safe if I can't find a job right away? I know I'm being reckless but I don't really have a choice. I hate this city and my ex is a stalker psycho who is making my life hell.

In Los Angeles you will need a LOT of money. It's extraordinarily expensive to live there.

I don't know what city you're in, but there has to be somewhere more pleasant than L.A. for you to go.

Right now I'm in Boston. It's really super expensive here too and I hate it

How about Los Feliz, Santa Cruz etc?

Los Feliz is part of L.A (though one of the more human parts and an area I actually like). Santa Cruz is nicer and cleaner, but even more expensive, and it's pretty far from everything. Are you planning on stripping when you move? L.A. is very high-contact with extras in most clubs and not a lot of money to be made.

I spent three and a half years in L.A., about three of the worst years of my life. I nearly died of asthma (I haven't had any asthma symptoms before moving there or since I left, it was just the smog) and ran up thousands of dollars in debt just trying to survive. It is not a happy life there unless you're rich, and forget about buying a decent house or raising a family.

Oh shit. That's terrible. I've just always wanted to move there and it's the perfect time. I don't really want to strip, I want to go to school and just find a regular job. I also want to act, I know, so cliche, but I might regret it later if I chicken out.

If you are in a decent financial situation, and your REALLY REALLY want to give LA a shot, then go for it. Keep in mind that it is expensive. Have you looked at craigalist ads to get an idea of what rent costs? Gas is pricer in CA than on the east coast (well, maybe not Boston, I don't know much about Boston). Also, a lot of rental apts. do not come with refrigerators (not sure why), so keep that in mind. My ex BF lives in LA; he likes it and makes very good money, but he moved to LA because of his job, as he's in the film industry. So he makes way more than he would anywhere else, and pays considerably more to live, but ultimately he's making more money than he's spending. However, if you don't have a high-paying career, it might be tough to expect to live prosperously in LA. It doesn't seem like stripping is terrifically lucrative there.

Oh, and about Santa Cruz... the job market is super competitive because it's a small city with a high-ranking university that produces heaps of qualified graduates several times a year. I lived there for a summer and couldn't get hired as a freakin' waitress, and I had been waiting tables, bartending, and making espresso for 3 years at that point. And there are no strip clubs in Santa Cruz. It's pretty though, and there are lots of cute girls who live there. Also a few cute boys, but way more cute girls.

Wow... umm, do you REALLy want to live in LA??? I'd honestly live anywhere else right now if it weren't for school. Most of the girls on this board who lived here have left. CA has gone down the tubes. Honestly- do yourself a favor and consider other options...

SD is rough, too, but a bit better. How much $$ you'll need depends on what your needs are, how you like to live (well/modestly/miserably, alone or with roomies), transportation, healthcare, and specific region.

Wow... That's something serious when alot of people discourage you from living in a particular city. I've heard alot of people say that LA is not the way to go right now... I feel the same way about South Florida (Broward/Miami-Dade).... High cost of living, willingness to perform extras, and too many politics.... I'm moving from South Florida in June... Thank God...

Have you considered other west coast cities? As a disclaimer I don't have any personal experience, but I remember reading posts on the board from girls that lived in LA and were hating life. I think many of them moved up north to seattle or portland. Maybe you might want to consider somewhere else? I mean if you are just planning to pick up and move to another random city, the world is your oyster.

Someone else posted on here awhile ago a site where you fill out what you like and it suggests some cities for you? Does anyone remember that link? I'm a little under the weather right now and can't recall.

I'm seriously in tears right now......I don't know what to do. I feel so trapped here and this was my plan out. There is this girl that came into my club a while aho, she was here visiting from LA. She is a bartender at the Burgendy room and told me how great the city is and it just sparked my interest again. Shit, I don't know what do do now.

I wish I knew that site! I just wanted to be in warm weather, taking acting classes, having fun in life finally. Not looking behind my back to see if my crazy ex is following me.

I just googled. Ironically (or maybe not) when I did this, my current city was in my top 5.

Now, don't get yourself worked up into a tizzy. Explore other options. (You haven't made an irreversible choice, yet.) Research, research, research. Maybe visit a few of cities (for a day or two) during the next couple of weeks or so and see what matches your lifestyle. Crash on friends' couches to keep expenses down (or very cheap extended stay hotels, like places you have to wear your socks to walk on the carpet (so be it...)). You just don't want to go somewhere blind. That would be a big mistake...unless your in like a super abusive relationship or something... I've had personal experience with relocating and making a bad decision... I have never been able to live the lifestyle that I lived previously... I will be moving in June '09 to Atlanta, but don't worry about me. Just make sure you EXTENSIVELY research where your going and what your getting into...

Yea, why the hell is that (guess you wouldnt know but still)? I had to rent a fridge for $20 a month. Never again with Los Angeles. Worst 10 months of my life. I broke a lease and had a $3400 debt because I hated LA so bad and wanted to go home. I moved there after visiting for a week-2weeks every few months. I had a GREAT time while visiting. Living there OTOH was a complete disaster.

LA sucks. Pick somewhere (anywhere) else.

if you want to move somehere warm where you could still dance and make decent money, what about atlanta, new orleans, parts of texas, or vegas. but not florida thou-its extras central
These days I like to count my money. I like to wash it delicately and iron it. Sometimes I dry it with some bounty to make it all nice and cuddly. I love my money... did I say that out loud?

Umm, yeah. Agreeing with everyone else on this thread. I will be out as soon as I am done with school.

How about the Bay Area? Yes, cost of living is high but with a bit of hunting on Craigslist you can find a room for about $500-800. You may have to have a roommate, though, and renting your own apartment will cost you well over a grand a month. But the Bay Area is GREAT - chill environment, chill people, great place to get away and make a new life. Some good schools, too. A car would be necessary if you planned on living outside the city (cheaper) and commuting in to dance.

Also, you might want to look for info on Long Beach (a bit south of L.A.). I've never been, but I keep hearing that it's a very laid-back, fun place to be, better than L.A. itself.

I live in the heart of Long Beach. (or the LBC if you wanna be cool.) Yes, I think it's better than both LA or OC (or the Inland Empire, but that kinda goes without saying... lol) but it SUcccccks for dancing and if you want to act, like you mentioned, you would need to be in LA, unless you wanted to commute. And freeways to LA= Teh Shi-ite. (without my motorcyle I'd go insane.) So yes... Long Beach is more liveable, but not that much better. I'd still suggest somewhere like Seattle or Portland.

San Diego is beautiful- pricey, and not that much money in dancing, but I support 2 people on what I make and am able to have a few vacations a year. There are also a few movie and tv studios here, though not many. In a less expensive part of town a 1bdrm is between 600-800. And it's just a 2 1/2 hour drive to LA You'll need quite a bit of moving money- dancing liscense is 200, first and last on a place, moving your stuff, and one or two months of expenses just incase.

Don't go to LA to act. You'll get lost in the cracks!

I'd move to a city for the first two things you mention and then get involved in community theater/local filmmaking.

Los Angeles is huge & alienating (I'm from there). I'd recommend the Bay Area, Portland or Seattle over it (though the weather is a lot rainer...)

I moved to Las Vegas on my own and then later ran into a girlfriend I knew from Chicago...long story but anyway it's really easy to make friends there (at least it was for me) and it isn't crazy expensive to live.

You can always start out in an extended stay hotel too (if you go pm me i'll tell you which ones are ok) and then find an apartment.

To move to Nevada though, dancing would be your best bet at first because most of the jobs are tourist related, and dancing is the easiest liscence to get.

http://www.westsiderentals.com will give you an idea of what the rental prices are throughout Los Angeles County. I think it includes Orange County as well. They have roommate listings as well and you can find a shared apartment with or without your own room for as low as $400, up to $800 or $1000+ near the universities. If you really want to act, I'd recommend trying to find UCLA or Loyola roomies in Westwood/Santa Monica or Culver City/Palms/Mar Vista who need an extra person.

You will likely have an easier time transitioning to LA and find things to do and they'd probably be able to point you in the right direction as far as auditions/acting. It is a running joke that every UCLA student seems to have a headshot or comp card! Once you're more established you could then rent your own place.

    Good luck!

I'm moving to L.A. in June for school. Can't be anymore expensive than San Francisco was to live in... I hope. It's not going to feel too much like a "new life" for me I'd think. All I'm doing is moving 4 1/2 hours down the coast. Ha.

Can't wait until I'm done w/L.A. (yes, already) and give Miami a shot!

Smart move. I did the same thing earlier this year. Leaving South Florida was the smartest thing I could've ever done for myself and my sanity.
