Default Every kid needs a lesson like this

I'm an RN working in a hospital. One of my coworkers brought in her 14-year old daughter, as Hurricane Ike has left them without power. She took advantage of the opportunity to teach her daughter a few lessons. She took the kid on a tour of the floor, concentrating on:

    1) A 21 year old former model who had OD'd herself into a vegetable on recreational drugs. All she can do is moan in pain once in a while. She needs botox to prevent her muscles into contracting to the point where they could potentially break her bones.
    2) A 21-year old guy who is now a quadriplegic due to a motorcycle accident. The poor kid is completely alert and is trapped in his body.
    3) A 56-year old lifelong smoker with chronic emphysema who gets winded just pulling himself up in bed and coughs so badly I sometimes wonder if his lungs will come up.

At the end of the tour, the kid's eyes were the size of dinner plates. She has sworn to every deity that she will not smoke, do drugs, or ride a motorcycle. Mission accomplished.

I agree. Exposing young people to "real life" usually does whip them into shape.

I agree & disagree. My first fiance died of recreational drug use, a year after his death a very good close friend of his died from the same thing. And just now four years later, his best friend died last week... Of the same thing. They both saw what happened to him, yet decided to do it anyhow. Infact the most recent to die, N, saw the second one, C, get into a vegatable coma- one life support- and watched her family pull the plug on her life. And his family just had to do the same exact thing to him that C's did. Though I find N's death more pissing me off cos he has a two year old. Ho hum.

^^^ I find that the reality check thing only works if the person is still young and impressionable. Once they're adults, it's almost like it's too late. Unfortunately, people will see thir best friend die and still do the same thing. I think adults (some, not all) have that "it won't happen to me" attitude a bit more strongly than kids do.

I dunno. When I was a little kid, like three, I saw a guy pour gasoline over himself and light himself on fire. My mom was like, "see! That's what happens when you do DRUGS!" But I could see that everyone else was also doing drugs and he was the only one that lit himself on fire. Strangely, when I was a teenager I was at a party where the same guys son lit himself on fire, and the cops were like, look, kiddos, this is why you should never ever do drugs.

I went on to do plenty of drugs, so the lessons obviously didn't work on me. Maybe it only works if the kid never sees anything else bad, or any other people doing drugs.

My half-brother turned into a violent, semi-homeless paranoid schizophrenic from heavy drug abuse so I'm getting a kick out of these replies. * ( cliche reference.)

Am I saying maybe some people are better off dying from an OD than living to be a walking trash can? No. Some people can just exist as a warning to others.

The WORST thing is when innocent bystanders get killed by stupid people trying to earn Darwin Awards. I can't forget the HBO "Autopsy" special about 3 young men who BURNED TO DEATH because a drunk driver slammed into the back of their Jeep, causing it to explode in a ball of flames. Hey, he's still kicking in a prison cell though. Life's a bitch. Wear a helmet!
