Default South Beach Diet...anybody tried it?

I was wondering if anybody had tried the South Beach Diet? I've been eating well and excercising regularly...I lost 5 or so lbs about 6 weeks ago and now I havent lost anymore.

If you have done the diet:

How long were you on it?

What types of things did you eat?

How much did you loose during the first two weeks ?

How much did you loose total

What was your starting weight (optional)

Thanks I would appreciate any and all feedback!

i did it over a year ago, it goes through like 2/3 phases... like the first week you can only eat specific foods then as the weeks go on you add more to your diet. i only made it thru the 1st but i did lose weight, and it was actual fat not water weight. its really hard to stick to though, absolutely NO carbs is torture!!!

I love South Beach! I got started with it in 2004, and lost 8 pounds in 2 weeks.

It is low carb, but does include a lot of low glycemic carbs in the first phase. You get low glycemic veggies with every meal, like spinach, broccoli, asparagus, artichokes, green beans, lettuce, celery, cucumbers etc. The high glycemic veggies like corn, peas, potaoes, carrots, pumpkin, beets, etc. are restricted for the first 2 weeks, but are added in slowly over the next two phases.

There are no fruits or grains in the first two weeks. I love veggies so this wasn't a problem for me at all. You really have to like and enjoy veggies to have success with South Beach.

Thank you! I have the book and read it this week. I don't think I'd have a problem not eating bread or fruit, and I do love veggies! Okay then I need to grocery shop and get on the ball with this.

any diet that restricts any type of fruits and vegetable but condones meat is insanity.

just eat more veg and fruit, cut out the white stuff- bread, sugar, pasta, etc and limit meat/dairy and you'll lose weight no problem.

It is only for two weeks, and the diet is designed for people that are at risk for heart disease and diabetes. There is a vegetarian version of the South Beach diet.

It is a bit like a controlled fast to help balance your body from an abusive diet. It is defiantly nothing like the hard core bodybuilder diets where you have to eat a pound and a half of meat a day. It really is very reasonable.

Well, I'm going to keep you all posted on my weight loss!! My boyfriend and I are starting tommorrow....I had a major goodbye to carbs dinner (hot dog, chips and cookies Oh My! LOL) and am committed to following the diet strictly for two weeks. The only thing that I am changing about the diet is the alcohol thing...you're not supposed to have any alcohol at all for two weeks, but I absolutely refuse to give up wine Wednesdays with my girlfriend and the occassional glass of wine at work, and I'm okay if that impedes my progress a little bit. Plus it's journey not a destination, and I'd rather do something I live with than be crabby and say to hell with the whole thing.

I feel like it would be fun to doccument my progress so I am going to give updates....Hope nobody minds, I get motivated by doccumenting things. I'm not going to weigh in all the time, but here we go:

    Starting Weight 125lbs, Height 5'2", BMI 22.9

My two week goal is to be at 119...the average weight loss is 12lbs in the first two weeks, I'm sure some of that is obviously water, but I'm setting myself at half that because I am so small to begin with.

    Wish me luck y'all!!

(oh also my BF is starting at 6'0" 220, not sure of the BMI on that..... him being a man and giving up beer as well, I'm betting he looses 12lbs easily)

    Thank you!

Well, so far today things have gone well. I woke up and had breakfast right away like it said in the book, I had egg whites and turkey bacon. Oh, and a diet coke.

As a snack later I had a piece of string cheese.

Just now I had another piece of string cheese (need to find more creative snacks lol) and am going to have turkey breast and veggies for dinner.

Before I go to bed I am planning on either having some nuts or a ricotta pudding (both are allowed on South Beach) so that I get enough calories in for the day as I haven't eaten that much yet and my dinner will be lite too!

Oh, and also I am having a glass of red wine because of my traumatic glass incident from earlier today....AAA!! I deserve it.

Ha! I started today too! And I didn't read this post yesterday!

I went on it a long time ago and did very well with it. I did eat tons of the string cheeses too! Went through bags of them over however long. While in phase three though I branched out too much and never dropped back into phase one to help mediate it.

So you got the book? Make the mini quiches. I did last night. Keep them individually wrapped in your freezer so you can have a quick snack. The fat free jello cups are also a good snack.

Also the ricotta cheese desserts are awesome!! I love the almond one (I add a tiny bit of vanilla extract as well) and the mocha one. I had one as a midafternoon snack today!

Though I do usually use 1.5 packets of splenda instead of just one.

Mind if I join you thread wise?

I'm just shy of 5'5", 121 lbs and have 22.7% body fat (I checked with my trainer this morning actually since I'm all about getting back in shape starting today!!)

Oh! And nother tip that helped me IMMENSELY last time (and I already made it this morning) is to always keep hard boiled eggs in the fridge.

I would buy two dozen eggs when food shoppig and hard boil a dozen right when I got home. (I'd use the other dozen for other egg preparations). They last for a week in the shell in the fridge. It's the easiest (even asier than having the mini quiches) quick fix in this diet for when you just have to eat something. One hard boiled egg is only 80 cal.

Plus, if you're pressed for lunch, it's easy to use fat free mayo and whip up a quick egg salad. I wrap a piece of lettuce around a tablespoon or two and am happy!

OMG PLEASE JOIN! That would be aswesome!!

I love hard boiled eggs I should make some right now!!

And you also just answered one of my questions...you can have fat free mayo in phase one! Sweet! I totally want to make BLTS with lettuce wraps, turkey bacon, tomato and fat free mayo!!

Let's go girl! So awesome we started the same day!

Ooo and also I just re-did my BMI because I looked at it again and it seemed really high! It's actually 22.9, not 24! Yes, that seems like a victory on day one allready LOL!!!

Be careful with the tomato- while you are allowed to have it in phase one it needs to be a bit limited.

Another tip if you need a meal is to call up your local chinese takeout place. Have them steam snowpeas, string beans and brocolli. Sometimes I'll stir fry a bit of lite tofu (can't have reg tofu-so don't get it with the take out) ad add it in. Eggplants are good too, and lots of chinese places can steam that too for you.

Also- just reread your post to look at your stats again- no alcohol whatsoever (well, except wine during cooking since the alcohol gets cooks out) in phase one.

The book has an awesome recipe for something that has a cilantro mayo. I loved the mayo concoction so much I would make that and use it as my may during the diet.

It's with the turkey roll ups. Page 179 if you have the hardcover.

Thanks I saw those they sound good! And I am making the mini quiches tommorrow...I was going to do it this morning but I woke up ravenous and my muffin tin was dirty, lol.

As for the vino I abosultely can not live without like at least 4 glasses of wine a week. Two on Wednesdays, and one each day I work. I know, spaz. But I figure it can't hurt that terribly much right? If it slows down my weight loss a little bit I don't mind.

Ya- just stay in phase one a bit longer then.

Oh- wen I made the mini quiches exactly to the recipe I found them still a bit too eggy. Try adding brocolli florets!

Oooh thanks! That surprises me because when I looked in the recipe it didn't seem like a lot of eggs butI I guess it is!

I dont mind staying in phase 1 longer eitheshouldr bc I feel like I have some gluten sensitivities and should give it up for a while anyways..

hmm. I already cheated a bit today. Had salad at chipoltes and just couldn't go without the sour cream and cheese... I was planning on taking it home so I can use my fat free sour cream and shredded mozz, but was too hungry. I'm trying to put it behind me.

Did you make the mini quiches this morning? How did they turn out??

Hi! I made them right before I went to school and had my boyfriend take them out of the oven and put them in the fridge for when I came home...so I didn't get them right out of the oven, but they turned out pretty well! I used the box of spinach, fat free cheese and onion and green pepper like in the recipie, and I put a bunch of Chalua (no sugar hot sauce)!

No worries about the sour cream you didn't eat a bunch of carbies or anything....

    For me today I did

Breakfast: 1/2 cup egg beaters with 2 slices of fat free ham, and 1 cup fat free cottage cheese

Snack: Celerey with sugar free calorie free diabetic dressing....

Lunch: ham and cheese rolled in lettuce:

    Snack: String Cheese

    Dinner: 3 mini quiches.

I have a question Katherine: What kind of salad dressing can you use in Phase 1...I bought the stuff I have because it has 0 calories or sugar (a balsamic vinagrette, its actually not bad) I looked at the South Beach Diet dressings in the store and they said only for phase 2 and 3...I really don't like oil and vinegar...are there any other options?

Hmm, I don't think I ate enough yesterday because I worke up at six in the morning like STARVING, so I ate a couple mini quiches and some cashews....

For lunch I had a small salad with lettuce, onion, calorie free dressing, celery and fat free feta cheese and a chicken breast. I tried to go even more calorie saving and cooked the chicken breast in fat free I can't believe it's not butter instead of olive oil, I dont reccommend doing that it turned out nasty.

Snack, I had a piece of string cheese

Dinner I had a "blt" which was four pieces of turkey bacon wrapped in lettuce with a tiny bit of tomato, fat free mayo and a piece of fat free mozerella.

Nother snack, i had one more piece of string cheese.

Oh, and I went to Jazz in the Park with my friends and had two glasses of wine, also. All alcohol is a no no on phase one, but I'm willing to slow down my wieght loss and stay on phase one (only supposed to be two weeks but can do it longer) for a month instead as well. I get really crabby when I can't have my vino at least twice a week, haha!

I really need to start cooking more and exploring my options on this diet and making sure I get variety, bc I seem to be eating a lot of processed stuf.....

It's only day 3 and I'm just trying to figure everything out. Physically, with the exception of waking so early hungry (majorly unusual for me) I am feeling well on this diet!

Look t the pistachio crusted chicken recipe in the phase one recipe section. There's this avocado salsa or maybe it's an actual avocado dressing. Try that it's awesome. I'd tell ya the page but I'm too tired to get it out and look for it.

I had chipolte's again today but no sour cream and no cheese. I had some leftover that I took home and I did add some low fat mozz to it. Also had the ricotta dessert, string cheese, handful of pistachio's, and sashimi and edamame.

If you're waking up hungry then you are not eating enough. You should never ever feel physically hungry on this diet. The trick is to have foods prepared so that you don't always have to grab a string cheese, nuts, or another 'legal' snack. You should be having real meals...

Did you hardboil eggs to keep in the fridge? Buy some low sodum turkey cold cuts an low fat swiss and red leaf or romaine lettuce. The turkey roll ups are yummy...

I bought a top sirloin to make the london broil with today. It was only a cople dollars. It'll marinate overnight- and the best part? Takes less than ten min to cook. Once it cools I'm gonna slice it up. Perfect to add on top of a salad when chicken gets boring, or to eat with some sauteed asaragus or spinach... Seriously- it's huge and it was just over five bucks...

In addition to committing yourself to the diet, commit to cooking a bit each day or a bit more every other day. If you have 'real' food prepared in your fridge you won't only reach for the snacks and ed up hungry...

Thanks chica!! I did make some hard boiled eggs....I am going to spend a bunch of time in the kitchen tommorow and make some meals in advance and put them in tupperware. I agree with you, I am more constantly eating snacks than meals. I think I'm paranoid about f-ing up the diet which is goofy!!

I went out to lunch today for instance and had a salad which basically ended up being lettuce and shrimp bc I wasnt really sure what I could have!

I need to re read the book! My boyfriend is making lean porkchops for dinner on the girl, going to see if thats legal!

Gosh! Im so excited this is the first diet I've ever been able to do, mainly bc I actually like the food I can eat on it and physically I feel great bc I'm not eating any gluten.....

I hope the scale shows some results at the end of two weeks...Eeeekk!! I'm not going to weigh myself til then bc I can get a little bit goofy...
