Default US taxpayer to bail out foreign banks?

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13690.html

"In a change from the original proposal sent to Capitol Hill, foreign-based banks with big U.S. operations could qualify for the Treasury Department’s mortgage bailout, according to the fine print of an administration statement Saturday night."

wouldn't it be that foreign banks in the US have american citizens as customers and working the same market?

    seems reasonable.

^^^ that's the Treasury's argument ... that the US banking system has now become so globalized, and so dependent on foreign capital to fund American loans, that 'Joe Sixpack' is unable to see a difference between banks with headquarters in NYC versus banks with headquarters in Zurich or Beijing.

But would it not be reasonable to go to lets say England and tell them if they are so worried about RBS or Germany in the case of Duetche bank that if they are so worried about these banks that maybe they should put some money into those banks as well?

If they are not then maybe we should not be either.

^^^ IMHO we shouldn't be putting taxpayer money into ANY of these financial institutions, American HQ or foreign HQ !!! Sure banks will fail. Sure subprime homeowners will be foreclosed on and subprime car owners will be repoed. But they deserve what they get as the result of their own financial irresponsibility a lot more than other financially responsible Americans who will wind up paying the bill for this bailout !
