    Default In A Cemetery..

.. is it normal for the grave markers to be flat on the ground instead of standing up? I went to see a friend on Saturday morning, and his stone thingy (and everyone else's) was laying in the ground. I was expecting this kind of thing:

    where everything is standing up.

Why would the stone be in the ground instead of up? Is that normal?!

Sometimes markers are flat in the ground. My sister and dad's markers are like that. I think it depends on the cemetery and/or the family.

Upright stone markers get destroyed a lot easier - pushed over, fall from settling, cracking, etc.

Also they're more expensive, since a large chunk of a nice stone is definitely more expensive than a small piece of a nice stone.

Is it normal? I think it depends on the cemetery and general tastes of the geographic area. My church's cemetery has quite a mixture of different stone types including the ones you describe.

I think it also makes it easier to mow if you have stones that are flat on the ground. As well as being cheaper than upright, and also to deter from toppling.

I know in the olden days rich dudes had stones that covered the entire grave called ledger stones, which were considered just an embellishment to the grave (along with the huge headstone). Perhaps the modern flat tombstones are based off of that concept.

It's normal! Cemeteries have rules to how the gravestones can be so they all look uniform. That's just the look of that cemetery.

It's also a space consideration. Some cementeries in metropolitan areas get full very fast and they want to avoid wasting useable/sellable space.

Easier to mow and they last longer.

On a side note, ever see those garish mausoleums and obelisks some people spend way too much on? Why buy a house for your dead body?

...less tempting to vandals too. Some cemeteries, like some in Florida, have hurricane winds and flooding(soil problems) so they use bronze plaques flush with the ground.
