Default Apartments in O.C. and San diego?

I can't decide whether I want to work in o.c. or san diego, so i've been apartment hunting for hours online. the problem is that i read a lot of the reviews on apartmentratings.com and pretty much every apartment listed on there has no higher than a 60% rating and tons and tons of negative reviews. It's annoying and it makes me wonder if I should just try to find private owners who rent out a condo or something. But, I don't live in California at the moment and need an easy move, so I figured an apartment would do it. Sooo, I was wondering if anyone had some good recommendations? I want an apartment that is safe and doesn't have thin walls/windows.

Also, does anyone know the safe areas in San Diego? I think la jolla, del mar, and the hillcrest areas are? But there's an apartment in serra mesa area and I wanted to know if that's a safe area? Thanks!!

San Diego county is really big. I grew up in the outskirts - north county so it takes about 20-40 minutes to get to most parts of downtown San Diego and about 30 min to south OC. North County is pretty cool, kinda quiet and not as fun as downtown - but you can find some decent apartments for about 1200 a month or so for a 1 or 2 br. I lived in a studio apt downtown for $940 in Little Italy (downtown) and I never felt unsafe. Hillcrest is cool too. La Jolla and Del Mar are awesome but much more expensive.

I have my reasons. Money isn't one of them.

sorry, it wasn't meant to be a personally directed statement- there have just been LOTS of people starting 'moving to ca' threads lately, and in light of everything going on, i often wonder why. but good luck in wherever you choose!

When are you thinking of moving?

Oh FYI, you'll drive yourself crazy looking at those sites. My complex is like 80% negative feedback. Happy tenents don't go online to post good reviews as much as pissed off tenents do.
    it's a self-selecting group.

I'm thinking about moving in Jan/Feb or May/June. Not sure yet. Is it better in the wintertime or the summertime to get started?

Thanks about that website. It was seriously annoying. I knew some of it has to be fake, bc I read some awful awful reviews about my past apartments that were just fine, so I've been suspicious. Still, it can bring you down when you're apartment hunting.
