lol OK while your threads are valid and informative, when I see one of yours pop up - the music "waaaaaa waaaaahh" (Debbie Downer) comes to mind. Nothing against you. It's just what comes to mind and I think it's funny.
That's funny. Melonie, post some happy threads!![]()

What are the marks of a sick culture?
It is a bad sign when the people of a country stop identifying themselves with the country and start identifying with a group. A racial group. Or a religion. Or a language. Anything, as long as it isn't the whole population.
A very bad sign. Particularism. It was once considered a Spanish vice but any country can fall sick with it. Dominance of males over females seems to be one of the symptoms.
Before a revolution can take place, the population must loose faith in both the police and the courts.
High taxation is important and so is inflation of the currency and the ratio of the productive to those on the public payroll. But that's old hat; everybody knows that a country is on the skids when its income and outgo get out of balance and stay that way - even though there are always endless attempts to wish it way by legislation. But I started looking for little signs and what some call silly-season symptoms.
I want to mention one of the obvious symptoms: Violence. Muggings. Sniping. Arson. Bombing. Terrorism of any sort. Riots of course - but I suspect that little incidents of violence, pecking way at people day after day, damage a culture even more than riots that flare up and then die down. Oh, conscription and slavery and arbitrary compulsion of all sorts and imprisonment without bail and without speedy trial - but those things are obvious; all the histories list them.
I think you have missed the most alarming symptom of all. This one I shall tell you. But go back and search for it. Examine it. Sick cultures show a complex of symptoms as you have named... But a dying culture invariably exhibits personal rudeness. Bad manners. Lack of consideration for others in minor matters. A loss of politeness, of gentle manners, is more significant than a riot.
This symptom is especially serious in that an individual displaying it never thinks of it as a sign of ill health but as proof of his/her strength. Look for it. Study it. It is too late to save this culture - this worldwide culture, not just the freak show here in California. Therefore we must now prepare the monasteries for the coming Dark Age. Electronic records are too fragile; we must again have books, of stable inks and resistant paper.

^^^ I suspect that history will record the events of the last couple of years ... and the coming few years ... in very bold ink !!!

^^ I've been here for 5 years, and your constant predictions for world disaster haven't come true yet. If that doesn't happen, will you be sad?
I suspect that some people just have a survivalist mentality and just are constantly preparing for the Armageddon.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Who would be here, if portions of our populations did not?
I am not ashamed of my survivalist mentality. I store food. I keep a bag in the trunk of the car with enough essentials for 72 hours. The tool box on my truck carries a spare fan belt, 6 quarts of oil, and a jug of coolant. Tire patch kit in addition to the spare tire.
I am thrilled that my new place will have a fireplace to go with the furnace. When I signed up with a new major (college) I had to resubmit my GI Bill. I am still waiting for them to pay. What have I been doing with the $30 in my checking. Nothing, since I can eat for weeks from the pantry.
Survivalists are not the evil inbred white supremists of hollywood movies. They are regular folks who take reasonable precautions to take care of themselves during times of disaster or deprivation.
Believe me you want more survivalists. They don't take up spaces in the govt handout line after each disaster. They don't need a fema debit card, or travel trailer. They take care of themselves and their families while quietly minding their own business. Then, when things are good at home; they take their chainsaw and clear the neighborhood street. Keep the insulin in a cold fridge for the diabetic neighbor without power. Email messages to families of their neighbors because they thought to buy a generator to run the computer and well pump a few hours a day.
Survivalists are good people and better neighbors. When I here survivalism sneered; it is usually by the suburbanite that can't live without their conveniences, and hates the survivalist for reminding them it can all be gone in an instant.

Being prepared for disasters and awaiting Armageddon are different things.

speaking of Armageddon ... from the Rev. Jesse Jackson
(snip)"PREPARE for a new America: That's the message that the Rev. Jesse Jackson conveyed to participants in the first World Policy Forum, held at this French lakeside resort last week.
He promised "fundamental changes" in US foreign policy - saying America must "heal wounds" it has caused to other nations, revive its alliances and apologize for the "arrogance of the Bush administration."
The most important change would occur in the Middle East, where "decades of putting Israel's interests first" would end.
Jackson believes that, although "Zionists who have controlled American policy for decades" remain strong, they'll lose a great deal of their clout when Barack Obama enters the White House. "(snip)
from
Jesse is confirming previous speculation that under an Obama presidency Israel will find itself with much less American 'active support'. Israel's probable reaction to this change will be to begin managing their own military affairs without first obtaining a'blessing' from Washington DC. This in turn greatly increases the risks of another 'hot' war in the middle east.

No, he's just a simple disaster.speaking of Armageddon ... from the Rev. Jesse Jackson
I don't mind protecting Israel's security, but I don't like the current administration's sucking up to every aggressive, anti-peace move they make. Plus Israel spies on US and has damaged US military vessels; they do that with impunity because they know that the pro-Israel lobby (and most every politician and others with the public attention) is a very strong protector. A little less coddling of those upstarts is what I hope for, which is more likely to bring peace than what we've been doing for decades. Jackson is right about that. But Jackson has no control over Obama; this is just his prediction. It's certainly not an certain Armageddon.

^^ On further thought, Israel wont hesitate to use tactical nuclear weapons if they cannot handle it by conventional means. I think at that point Israel will lose a lot of support (and likely any country that supports such an extreme decision) because of the extreme global repercussions that will follow -- fallout, precedent, the Iran factor, and general Muslim extreme anger.
I hope and don't think it will happen. But I was wrong once -- we reelected Bush

Jesse Jackson doesn't speak for Obama, especially considering what he said about him.

And before that....
The Persian Empire was...formed under Cyrus the Great, who took over the empire of the Medes, and conquered much of the Middle East, including the territories of the Babylonians, Assyrians, the Phoenicians, and the Lydians. Cambyses, Son of Cyrus the Great, continued his conquests by conquering Egypt. The Achaemenid Persian Empire was ended by Alexander the Great. However, the Persian Empire arose again during the Parthian and Sassanid Empires of Iran followed by Iranian post-islamic Empires like Safavids, up to modern day Iran.
Most of the successive states in Greater Iran prior to March 1935 are collectively called the Persian Empire by Western historians.
Virtually all the successor empires of Persia were major regional and some major international powers in their day...a series of Iranian or Persian speaking empires...ruled over the Iranian plateau, the original Persian homeland, and beyond in Western Asia, Central Asia and the Caucasus.
History:
1.1 Median Empire (728 BC-559 BC)
1.2 Achaemenid Empire (550 BC–330 BC)
1.3 Parthian Empire (250 BC–AD 226)
1.4 Sassanid Empire (226–651)
1.5 Conquest of Persia by Muslims
1.6 Samanid Persian Empire
1.7 Saffarid Persian Empire
1.8 Buwayhid Persian Empire
1.9 Turco-Persian rule (1037–1219)
1.10 Mongols and their successors (1219–1500)
1.11 Safavid Persian Empire (1500–1722)
1.12 Persia and Europe (1722–1914)
1.13 World War I and the Interbellum (1914–1935)
