    Default zoloft and alcohol

I have recently been prescribed Zoloft. It's my first time every taking any psych drugs.
I like to go out on weekends and drink...How will this affect my weekend partying? Do I have to avoid alcohol all together? Drink in moderation? How much is that anyway? How will this interact with alcohol? Anythign else I should know about this drug?

    thanks ya!

I'm not sure what to tell you, but you can call any pharmacist and ask them. Does it say on the pamphlet that came with the script?
    Hope you feel better soon.
I took it for awhile- but I don't really drink.

I wouldn't drink heavily on that...by which I mean shots and the like. To be quite honest, this might be awful advice, but before you go out and drink on it I would stay home and have a couple cocktails and see how it affects you. And by that I mean like 3 -4 in a 3 hour period maximum!

You will get intoxicated very easily while on an SSRI medication such as Zoloft. If I have two drinks on Luvox (another SSRI) I will feel quite tipsy. If I drink 3 drinks I will be drunk. If I have more than that I will black out.
If you are taking the medication for depression you may notice that after a night out drinking you feel a bit down. Im not sure if this is the result of drinking on the medication or just the result of alcohol itself.

    ^ thanks, Jai.
By " feel a bit down" what do you mean exactly? I am taking the zoloft because I was suicidal, and if I drink and it makes me feel a bit down, I may be suicidal again...and we don't want that. So if it works that way, I suppose I should avoid alcohol all together, unfortunatly.

I meant like flat, maybe a bit tearful. That's how I feel after I drink which is one of the reasons that I no longer drink.

If your depression is that serious that u have had suicidal thoughts then dont drink and give the medication a chance to work.

How much do you drink? Like how many drinks per week? Alcohol is a depressant and can worsen depression. I would try to quit or seriously cut down on your drinks. It might be really good for you.

Same with me when I took Zoloft. My doctor told me it's ok to drink, as long it's in in moderation. I was only drinking 1 no more than 2 drinks when I went out..It really does intensify the effect.

I used to be on Zoloft and when I drank alcohol I got really sick. It didn't entirely stop me, I just had absolutely terrible hangovers. Sometimes I would end up puking later that same night.

I am almost certain your doctor will tell you not to binge drink. You really should ask your doctor if it's okay to drink at all. Ask at your next med check, or call his/her voicmail.

I forgot to mention that. I nearly always threw up when I drank while on SSRI meds.

I'd read the labels on your script bottle and the insert that should have came with your script. I don't think most SSRI's and alcohol are contraindicated but just remember alcohol is a depressant.

So I drank tonight...and it has the opposite effect on me for some reason. I could not get a buzz. Not even a tiny one. I drank a good amount, I was careful and spaced them out so it wouldnt hit me at once, and I wanted to see how I felt after each drink, but I was not able to get buzzed at all. I was quite disappointed.

That's how I felt. So, I continued to drink more. I was cooking this wonderful dinner. Then my ex-boyfriend came home from work all pissy, as usual (he was sooo abusive. so glad i came to my senses and left his ass.) So he thought it was an opportune time to kick me out. The rest is history. Woke up in handcuffs on the side of the turnpike. Car totalled. Never had a chance to eat that wonderful dinner I made. He said it was delicious.

omg. So you didnt feel buzzed but you just blacked out at some point?

I felt 100% totally fine. Lets see...I worked last night from 10pm till 4am. Before I went to work I had about 2 shots of rum in a coke. Then I went to work and I had 1 malibu redbull, it was a shot and a half. Abotu a half hour later I had a 2 more back to back, both 1 1/2 shots. An hour after than I had another one. At this point I felt shakey but I attributed it to the redbull, and had no buzz at all. I worked for 2 more hours and went home, feeling completly fine, not even slghtly buzzed.

So total I had.... About 8 shots of Malibu in a a 6 hour period? I should have felt something.

I really need to just get drunk at home and see what happens, maybe with a friend over to monitor what's going on if I do black out. I want to know what I can handle and what i can do.

I remember him yelling at me, pushing me down the hallway, and taking the house keys off of my key ring. I don't remember the elevator ride down. I got in my car and closed door. I was crying uncontrollably and accidentally backed the car up into the apartment building. In the sideview mirror I saw him manically waving his arms for me to leave the parking lot, so I drove away... He opened the automatic gate, I drove through, and I saw it close behind me from the rearview mirror. I started driving to my parents house... And that's all I can remember...

Lexapro and Alcohol do not mix... whatsoever....

you should never mix a stimulant (zoloft) with a depressant (alcohol, barbituates, opiates). this is why it is so dangerous to mix vodka (depressant) with red bull (stimulant). alcohol in any size dosage IS a depressant because it reduces neural activity, slows your bodily functions, etc -because of that i would not recommend anyone who is suicidal/in need of anti-depressants consume any alcohol. it will only work against you. now, i'm not psychologist, but i am studying to become one. and in the future if you ever have questions about your medication please consult your doctor/psychiatrist. hope that helps, good luck hun <3

I've been drinking with zoloft for quite awhile now. I also have the effect of never feeling buzzed until I realize that I actually blacked out. For some reason I can just drink and drink and drink and *feel* sober. I've noticed that I constantly crave alcohol and pot when I'm on zoloft. My drug consumption definitely went up while on zoloft because of this weird insatiable feeling. I've tried to wean myself off of zoloft and the cravings for the other stuff also go down if not completely away. But then I get suicidal thoughts. So I take more zoloft, the cravings start again, and it's this weird fucking cycle.

sweetie,i hate to be a party pooper but i am also concerned about you, manufacturers of zoloft do not recommend drinking while on this medication. for one thing alcohol and zoloft upon similar chemicals in the brain including depression symptoms or affecting motor skills. drinking moderately means one drink for a woman, two drinks for a man. for a woman that translates to one 12 oz. beer, one 5 oz. glass of wine,or 1 oz. of "high test"/hard liquor(ie 100 proof).

i know this is not what you want to hear if you enjoy drinking. but i would recommend that you not drink while you are waiting to see how this medication works for you. perhaps the depression contributes to your wanting to drink. if the zoloft works for you, maybe you won't want or need to "self medicate" with alcohol.

    take good care.
