Default My computer's fan just stopped working

Can anyone help me with this or point me in the right direction? Nothing damaging happened to my computer, but now the "Fan" thing doesn't work and the computer turns off from overheating all of the time. Like, 7 times tonight and I haven't even been running anything but Firefox.

I had my wireless stuff looked at by my dad's military computer coworker guys, and I wonder if they turned the fan thing off or something. Anyone know how to turn it back on?

I don't think its just clogged. I mean, I had it at a pro today. I think this computer is just a piece of crap. It already overheated and shut down a few times a night anyway.

Thanks for your suggestions though UV, I will take it back to my civilian computer people.

Get a can of air and blow it out. If that doesn't work, time for a new fan. Should be like 10$ for the parts (I have no idea how much it costs to have someone replace it, as i do it all myself and pretty much always have).

Also, has anyone been inside it? Could be the thing got disconnected accidentally, i've seen that before.

If you have a laptop a cooling pad is about $25 which will work. If you have a desktop, you can buy a new cooling fan for a couple of bucks and it is easy to replace. Anyone competent with a soldering iron and a screwdriver can fix two wires and screw it into place. If you are not comfortable doing it I am sure you can find someone who is. The repair should take no longer than 10 minutes

A soldering iron? All you do is screw it in and plug it to the motherboard. No soldering iron required.

If you do it yourself make sure and kick the static out of your body, though. That can fry your mobo. Just wash your hands and touch the faucet, should be enough to kick the static out. And don't stand on carpet doing it. Try to do it standing on a hardwood floor or linoleum. NEVER touch your motherboard with static in you.

Get that fan FIXED right away or it's goodbye computer. If it was the chip's fan, it's almost dead already. If it's the power supply's fan, you have only slightly more time. If it's the cases fan, you have a maybe couple of hours, then something expensive will melt down and fail.

I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

I did that. Got a small fan from Walmart. It can be run with batteries or an ac cord. didn't come with cord. I got a universal AC adapter with all of the interchangable plugs for like $20 or so. I use that fan when my puter starts getting hot. The CPU fan will start speeding up when the computer is getting too warm, and that's when *click* on comes my little extra fan. Side is always off computer now.

I milked my dying computer for about 8 months this way, because the fan couldn't be removed/replaced. Sucks. Sooo glad i just got a new comp.

I use a $15.00 "Rubbermaid" laptop stand from Walmart...vented metal platform that raises my laptop up and it REALLY increases the airflow,it's amazingly effective.

Are we talking a laptop or a desktop??

I have cats so I'm always cleaning a whole kitty worth of fur off mine!!

    Laptop.
*most* have compartments so there's no need to disassemble it for something so simple.
(Not Vaio's though. No No!! They must be completely stripped in order to do anything. UGH!!)

The easiest way to tell if it's funky in there is if the vent is crusted with dust ON THE OUTSIDE. Ewww!!
    - This goes for desktops too!!
They are much easier to clean. I have very limited experience with them but I do know they are far simpler to work with.

Whatever you have - there will be a disassembly manual on the net somewhere.

    If it's a laptop? - I can help you
I can tear down and reassemble a Vaio VGN-B blindfolded in about 20min. - So definitely ask me if you've got one of those.
Otherwise, I'm pretty familiar with Toshiba's. (And have successfully negotiated HP, Ben-Q, Dell, Acer ect.)
If you have articulate fingers with controlled pressure, common sense and a screw driver - it's too easy. (Also totally free and very high in personal satisfaction!) Otherwise.. yeah. Probably give it a miss.

was there a storm recently? My computer fan died after lightning struck across the street and sent a surge blowing out my fan. Thank god my insurance covered the replacement of the entire system.

What kind is it? I have a Compaq Presario and apparently they are known to very easily overheat.

Grrr I just typed out a long reply to everyone else but I accidentally erased it just now. So, long story short: Bought cooling pad for laptop, didn't work, computer won't turn on anymore, dad's computer guys say that cleaned the fan, so there must be some other problem with it, comp (refurbished compaq presario) has broken like 6 times in the less than two years I've had it. Will probably just sell it as is and get a new comp.

Anyone know of a good, reliable, fast computer? And one that won't overheat if I want to play The Sims 2 on it?

CompUSA has some that might fit your sims needs.
Here's a link to their store locator.
    http://www.compusa.com/retailstores/...ores/index.asp

No clue if they have any stores near you, but the best option is to go into computer stores and ask them.
They'll have a better idea what you'll need, and might also be able to assemble a system for you.
I put mine together 5+ years ago, and that makes it easier to upgrade whenever I need.
(Still able to play World of Nerdcraft on it to this day.)
