Can electric ovens explode? I have been freaking out about this all the time. I always want to avoid using the oven because I think it's going to catch fire and explode and everyone is going to die. Today my fiance finally snapped at me because I am so terrified of the oven .

I think it'd take a lot to make it explode as there is no gas present.

Um, what? I don't understand this at all. Can you explain where this fear came from?

I suppose anything's possible, but I've never heard of an electric oven blowing up, no. Gas stovetops have done it before if too much gas leaks and the pilot doesn't ignite on time, and a flame comes too close, but such occurrences are extremely rare. And I don't see how it would ever be possible for an electric stove or oven to explode.

Yes, they can. I have firsthand experience. I was making something and took it out the oven, but forgot to turn it off. The door was still open, and sparks flew.. then a huge flame. The whole first floor of my house was filled with toxic smoke, I had to open all the doors for an hour and fan it out. Just becareful to turn it off when you're not using it.

I have no idea where this fear came from but im always terrified of everything. I seriously can't stop peeking in the stove right now. Im cooking a turkey breast that should have been done in an hour in a half (I started at 5:30) and I keep turning it off thinking something is going to happen. It is now 9:18 and wont be done till 10 or so "if" I leave it alone.

Electricity doesn't explode. But it can arc and present a risk of fire. You should have a circuit breaker in your breaker box dedicated to your oven (since it is 220V and high amperage draw) that will sense inappropriate current flow or a short circuit and break the circuit. If that occurs you should not try to restart or override the safety protection device. Have a qualified electrician take a look at it as soon as possible.

AznExtasy, are you sure that was an electric oven? That really sounds more like gas to me.

Whoa. It sounds like your circuit breaker is not working (that happens when they get really old). The nasty smell and smoke was probably from the plastic insulation on the wires getting very hot due to excessive current. Electricity always seeks a path to ground and if there is a short circuit and the current limiting devices aren't functioning properly you wind up with an infinite amount of current direct to ground which the wire isn't prepared to handle. Very dangerous and a fire hazard!

How old is your oven and how old is the wiring in the house? Anything built in the last 20 years or so has built in safety mechanisms to prevent electrocution or fire.

You should be fine. Just cook your turkey and stay nearby. If something goes wrong your nose and your smoke detector will warn you way before you are in any real danger.

Okay, I used to have an irrational fear of burning down the house with the oven. I dont know why. Rest assured, it has never happened to me, not even the time I was baby sitting and stuck a frozen pizza in the oven ON the cardboard bc I was so distracted (dont do that it could probably start a fire)...but dont worry, you're okay. I now use the oven daily.

FBR gave some great advice... it wouldn't hurt to have a fire extinguisher around the house, either. Yes, it's a safety thing, but it will probably make you feel better as well.
