    Thumbs up Road Trip!!

It's been awhile since I took a Big Damn Road Trip. My friend from Australia is coming and she really wants to see America, so we're going to do a big sightseeing tour on the way to visit my family. I'm looking for tips and advice on things to do along the way, so chime in if you have any advice! We'll be doing this in a few weeks. (Neither of us will be stripping; she's not a dancer.)

Our itinerary looks something like this:

Day 1 - Portland, OR to Bozeman, MT
Day 2 - Bozeman to Yellowstone, spending day and night in Yellowstone
Day 3 - Yellowstone to Boulder, CO
Day 4 - Boulder to Fayetteville, AR
Day 5 - Fayetteville to Vicksburg, MS
Day 6 - Vicksburg to New Orleans, spending evening checking out NOLA
Day 7 - Half the day in NOLA, heading to Memphis that night

Possible I'll have to stop and spend Yom Kippur in one of those places too.

So yeah, what should we be sure not to miss?

Not sure of your exact route, but if you are following Google's directions, you should pass through Kansas and Oklahoma on the your way to Fayetteville. Stop at Braum's for ice cream. The Braum family still owns the dairy in Oklahoma and will only ship milk/ice cream one day's drive from there so you can't get it just anywhere. They also serve burgers and chicken sandwiches, but I always go for the ice cream. YUMMY!

If you pass by Denver, I always like Garden of the Gods and the 16th Street Mall.

Outside Little Rock is a town called Toad Suck...nothing there and no reason to stop except for the town's name. It just cracks me up every time I think of it, but I'm goofy that way.

Anything I have to suggest for Memphis involves the pig and I know you are not down with the pig.

Have fun, drive safe and carry jumper cables!

Great lead on the Braum dairy, thanks! I'll check it out. And yeah, I've been to Toad Suck, haha... Arkansas has a ton of ridiculous town names, my favorite being Rooster Poot (though Chilly Dick and Bald Knob are also contenders).

Memphis is the conclusion, not so much part of the trip. I grew up there so I've already got a list of places to show off, plus a lot of family to visit.

http://www.braums.com/index.asp so you can find plenty of them along the way .

If you determine your route before you go, I can help more with the Kansas/Oklahoma/Arkansas side of things.

I've been to New Orleans a million times growing up, but I haven't been back since the hurricane. I suppose all those awesome little restaurants in the Ninth Ward are gone. What else has changed? Oh, and haha, did they ever rebuild the Riverwalk Mall? I was there when that damn barge crashed into it and levelled half the mall!

And you will have to come meet us somewhere, Limabean. I'll let you know when we're going to be in New Orleans and you can let us know some awesome locals' spot, or just meet us at Cafe du Monde. I'm really nervous about the NOLA part of the trip; it's the one place she most wants to see, and I'm anxious about what might have changed since I was there. I think the last time I was in New Orleans would've been in 2001 or so.

And no.speak, you should go do your roadtrip yourself if no one will join you. That's how I did my first and there's nothing like solo roadtripping! (Although roadtripping with a goofy Australian sounds like it's going to be fun too.)

Wat about your return trip? Are you driving back? If so, I say switch up the route to include Southwestern Utah (my favorite), maybe parts of New Mexico and Arizona before that, and then swing up the coast of California at the end?

Oh and I love the idea of you spending Yom Kippur in NOLA, atoning on Bourbon St.

I'll be driving back, but I think my friend will be going on ahead to England. I've already seen the west and California 974,653,298 times so I think I'm just going to take the fast way back by myself.

Sounds about right because I was in high school. My friend and I were on our way to the food court to get some Haagen-Dasz when there was this WHUMP. Bizarre.

But we've still got our culture, and still know how to have fun. Many parts of the city are super depressing still, because of water marks from the flood and whatnot. I'm sure you'll notice more change than I would, since you haven't been here since the flood.

But yeah, definitely let me know when. My favorite bars are on Magazine St. Yay for living uptown! I don't usually venture downtown or to the quarter anymore, it's too touristy. But you'll have fun no matter where ya go!
Totally. I'll let you know when we're getting close, and I'm glad to hear it's still New Orleans!

I'd tell you to take her through the Beartooth Pass near Yellowstone for some high altitude scenery, but that's not on the highway coming from Bozeman. You gotta love a road where you can see ten feet of snow along the road in the middle of Summer.

Driving through Kansas is gonna blow (and so will the wind) so try to stay on the interstate (70 & 135) as much as possible, (so you get through fast as possible). There's a big ass windmill farm near Ellsworth, KS worth a few snapshots. Turn south at Salina, and unless you want to deal with three toll roads between Wichita and Fayetteville, turn east at Wichita and find a path over to Joplin, MO.

Maybe its because I live here, have ate it a hundred times, and don't appreciate it, but Braum's is well...okay. Good ice cream, but nothing spectacular. When, I'm on the road though, I always try to hit stuff that I can't see at home.

    Have a fun trip.

Good choice. You will also be able to see the Little Big Horn if you stay on I 80. If you go out the east entrance instead stop in Cody, Wyoming for the Buffalo Bill wild west museum. this is not some hokey museum. There is like five museum here including my fave the firearms museum. the preserved native artifacts in the Buffalo Bill Museum is awesome in their own right.

The Peoples Republic of Boulder? Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh. As a conservative this place should give you hives. . One more hour south and go to Colorado Springs! Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, Manitou Springs, the Olympic Center, and if it is a Sunday. Brunch at the Broadmoor.

More BBQ ? Someone is feeling deprived of smoked goodness. Just a little pork, you can get forgiveness later.

If this involves shots, where and when.

If you decide to come through Colorado, give me a PM and I will meet you for a Cocktail. That is an excuse for me to have that drink we talked about in the Ashland thread and to go to the spyderco store.

    Cheers.

You're so lucky. I haven't been on a road trip for 2 1/2 years. I would love if my job allowed the flexibility for us to just take off like that. You must be so excited!

Dammit, Sarge, I just got this and we passed through Colorado today. We got delayed by road construction in Wyoming and had to rearrange our trip, so we never made Boulder and now we're in Oklahoma. Kansas was pretty damn boring but my friend got to try her first Moon Pie, and we got ice cream at Braum's before Yom Kippur started - it was indeed awesome, thanks for the recommendation. Now I'm all bummed out that I'm passing through eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas tomorrow but I can't have any Mazzio's pizza because I'm fasting.

This has been a totally bitchen trip so far though!

Sorry I didn't see this sooner, but sounds like you missed the People's Republic of Boulder anyways. For the record, and for your next trip, I disagree with Sarge, though. Boulder is less than an hour from Rocky Mountain N.P. And the Broadmoor is way overrated. There are dozens of really hot places to eat in Boulder, Denver, even in the Springs that are much better than the Broadmoor. Sorry, Sarge.

I hope you at least drove through Grand Tetons National Park on the way down from Yellowstone. Also, for the future, there are dozens of routes from NW Wyoming to Colorado that avoid I-80 and its never ending road construction and take you through some spectacular country. Next time you're headed this way, P.M.

We did indeed go through the Tetons, but the road construction was on Highway 26. One lane for both directions, sitting and waiting for the damn pilot car and then creeping forward at 25 mph for miles and miles. It put us hours behind schedule. Oh well, it's been fun anyway.

Our last long day's drive is behind us, thank goodness! Now we get to stop and smell the roses. Think I'll take my friend to a Cracker Barrell today. I'm fasting but it'll be fun to watch her try a chicken-fried steak. It really is new and fun to see your own country through someone else's eyes!

    Ah well. Your driving back.

P.S. I could have warned you that driving through the wheat and corn states is boring as hell in sept and oct. everything is plowed under. Miles of red dirt. How do I know. One long soul crushingly boring drive across Kansas a few years back.

    PSS

It is supposed to be an RC cola and a moon pie.

er ARrrrrrrrrrSeeeeeeeeee Cullah an ah Muh-ooooooooooon pie.
