I have just discovered the most delicious fruit I've ever had, and I am something of an interesting-fruit connoisseur. At the farmer's market yesterday, we picked up several pink pearl apples; this is a variety of apple that apparently only grows on the west coast, ripens in late summer, and has a very short growing season. Evidently they aren't available in nationwide supermarkets because they bruise easily and because their growing season is so short. So you might have trouble finding them.
But if you find them... OH MAN, you have to try them! The outside is a bland brownish-yellow with a slight blush to it, but inside they're a beautiful marbled pink. They're crispy, juicy, and very tart, with a flavor reminiscent of crab apples and grapefruit. These apples are incredible. I was thinking how delicious they would be in a pie, or cooked down to pink applesauce, but I just can't bring myself to cook with them because they're so delicious on their own!
Has anyone ever heard of these before? I can't believe I've been missing them my whole life! If you see them at your farmer's market, buy them up!
