    Default What's your contact prescription?

I feel like my eyesight is really bad, when I first got contacts (6 years ago) I was -2.25, before I got pregnant I was -3.00, during I was -3.50, and now I'm still -3.50, so I think my eyes got worse from the hormones.... will they ever go back to normal????

What is the contact prescription for being legally blind? My uncle has such a bad prescription he's legally blind, he wears contacts though.

Anyways.. what's ur prescription and will my eyes ever go back to what they were before?

Don't worry about eyesight--there's always Lasik, right? I doubt your eyes will get better though. My prescription is something like -6.0, and I'm still wearing soft lenses! If I'm not worried, then you shouldn't be.

Mine's -8.0. I'm blind as a friggin' bat. But it corrects to 20/20, and yes, there is always LASIK if I get sick of it.

-1.75 with astigmatism in the left and -1.25 on the right.

If you wear glasses instead and take them on and off a lot instead of letting your eyes get 'used to' contacts (thus becoming weaker because they don't need to work) then you'll have better eyesight.

Mine gets better each appointment because I'm constantly putting my glasses on and taking them off.

My prescription is -5.50 in one eye and like -4.75 in the other. It gets progressively worse each year from all my reading and studying for school. So don't worry, you've got a looong way to go until you're blind.

You could get Lasik, but there's one thing I'm not sure most people realize about it. As you get older, your eyes naturally become more far-sided. So if you get Lasik, over time your eyes will eventually become far-sided to the same magnitude as they were near-sided before you got the procedure done.

This is not even the tiniest bit true. Some people do become farsighted with age, but it is certainly not a universal occurrance by any stretch. I've never, ever, ever heard that, "your eyes become farsighted to the same magnitude that they were nearsighted before."

The only after-LASIK effect is that a small incidence of nearsighted patients may notice that they require bifocals or corrective lenses around middle age (though later than most people begin to need them). Wikipedia says, "Myopic (nearsighted) people who are close to the age (mid- to late-forties) when they will require either reading glasses or bifocal eyeglasses may find that they still require reading glasses despite having undergone refractive LASIK surgery. Myopic people generally require reading glasses or bifocal eyeglasses at a later age than people who are emmetropic (those who see without eyeglasses), but this benefit is lost if they undergo LASIK. This is not a complication but an expected result of the physical laws of optics."

In other words, if you're already nearsighted and you have LASIK, there's a chance you may develop some nearsightedness again in middle age due to the aging of the eye. There's nothing about a similar effect among farsighted people, and definitely zero about developing an equivalent dysfunction in your sight to what you had before LASIK.

There's also a LASIK procedure that allows for a bifocal correction, interestingly enough.

LASIK's been around for 30 years (though greatly improved in the last 5-10). Believe me, if there were serious long-term complications like that, they would be making the news now. And in fact, Wikipedia says, "The researchers calculated the risk of significant vision loss consequence of LASIK surgery to be closer to 1-in-10,000 cases."

So do you think i should wear my weaker contacts (-3 instead of -3.5) to train my eyes to get stronger? Would that be beneficial or not?

The hormones is what did it....i got worse by -.5 in a month. They haven't changed back either!!

wow, dude, you def win that one, i'm only an 8/8.5. Whenever me and my friends talk about being "blind" the test we use is "Could you find a bathroom in under 5 minutes in an unfamiliar house? I think i 'd find it ih i felt tile, but not by sight alone, but i can't imagine what 11 is like

    L -3.25 R -3.50

But I don't know what those numbers mean .. I think I'm really blind, unless I'm in a familiar place, like I can totally get around my apartment without my lenses in, but I'd never watch TV without them, cuz it's all a color blur. But my number is on the low side in the thread...

-2.75 in both eyes. I just got contacts last year after needing them for several years, once I put them on I was like, WOW.

-2.5/-2.75, I wear contacts 90% of the time, unless it's late & I'm at home, I'll throw on the glasses.
But sheeeeeeeesh, -11.5..... you must not legally be allowed to drive with vision correction, huh?

I am -3.50 in both eyes. Mine didn't change during my pregnancy or since I had my son, but my eyes have gotten better over the years for whatever reason.

I don't understand how not wearing you glasses will make them stronger...you're straining them even more. Maybe if your eyesight barely sucks at all but theres no way I could do that and not have migrains. I've worn outdated percription )like they weren't strong enough) contacts for a whole year and they never "adjusted" and got better. Yha you get sort of used to it, but once you put in your real perscription you'll realize how much better you can see and not get headaches.

My dad's eye sight has improved as he's gotten old but not completly regressed back to 20/20 or even close. I don't think lasik will cause you major issues as you get older.

I think I'm -5 or -3 in both, not really sure.

Is it rare to be + instead of -? Mine is +3.50, but i notice no one else even has a +.

+ would mean that you are farsighted... which means you can't see things close up, like reading glasses.

I have around -8 (it varies year by year by about .25) and essentially my focal limit is about 2" in front of my face. I think I could still find a bathroom, though---even a REALLY FUZZY toilet and bathtub still looks like a toilet and bathtub.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this who has extreme nearsightedness, but though I can't see for shit past my own nose, my close-up sight is AWESOME. I can see tiny details that other people would need a magnifying glass to see, like the details of my fingerprints or the pixels in a photograph, simply *because* my focal point is so close. It's like having zoom lenses for eyeballs. Sure, it'd be nice to see normally, but if I did get LASIK, I know I would miss that.

For the comment that I am not legally allowed to drive that is false, I drive fine, and I have a legal license as well. Just because I have bad myfobia, does not mean that I'm not allowed to drive, well anyways, just to let anyone else who is inquiring about the legality of driving I drive fine have been for the last 19 years
