    Default My mother is hilarious.

so.... I think my mom knows i dance now.

I was talking to her on the phone today about taxes and paying for school and shit and told her I am fine with money and am already almost 1/2 way there in regards to my first tuition payment (5000), I tell her I'm waitressing 5 nights a week and making 100ish a night (at a fancy restaurant, believable) so I'm making 500/week, 2000/month and i've been working for almost two months, so saving around 2K isn't that unbelievable. She goes "you're not dancing on the side are you??" in a tone of voice that wasn't accusatory... it was a tone like she knows that I dance and doesn't care!! lol

So... should I just tell her??? AH!!!!!

Did any of your parents do this with you? It's kind of like when your parents already know you're gay and have known forever and just play along with your heterosexual lies and then finally when you come out and tell them it's like a huge deal to you but they already know and don't care and it's a huge relief...

at least i hope she doesn't care.

    just wanted to share.

    Hahahaha that's funny.

Same thing happened to my friend. She was from NY and had moved to Atlanta, and her parents were encouraging her to move back. They even said "You can move back here and, uh, do whatever it is you do to make money there in Atlanta" From then on it was kind-of a joke bc we are pretty sure her parents knew, just never wanted to ask or confront her. I don't think she ever told them......

Yeah it's a tough call-you can probably relax a lot more if she knew, but then again if she didn't support you it could be hell.

I have been a stripper forever and my gma (who raised me) luckily has never found out. She even thinks I still work at Wells Fargo (I worked there for 3 months after graduating college, and 5 years later I "still" work there!!!!!!!!!!) But with all the insanity in the financial market, I think I am going to get "laid off" and my husband "will support me" Ha. So yeah, it kind of sucks having to lie and keep up the cherade (sp?!)

my mom knows i dance. she did my laundry and when i came home to her apartment to sleep she said very sleepily, "hey i did your laundry. i put all your strippie butt-floss in that bag."

both my parents know, but our family is pretty realistic about what people from my background have to do for money, so they don't care really. i don't really talk to my dad about it but he is ok with it. my mom makes jokes and says she wants to come see me dance as if i am in broadway. lol. i tell her no way.

honestly, i have never met a soul in my poor hometown that ever made a judgement on any sex worker or any other kind of hustler. they usually say, "sounds like good money." the only experience i have with judgmental friends and/or family are the middle class ones. just an experiential tidbit i find interesting.

Yeah, with my dad it was "You're not stripping, right?"

I would personally not tell her unless you have a reason to.

my family whispered the name of my club like you would whisper "whore" outside a church for years.

my brother was the one who finally said something to mother along the lines of...get over it.

I think my parents know too, at least my mom. I tell them I work with my boyfriend (doing construction.....ha!). They have point-blank asked me several times "You're not working at a go-go bar are you?" I have come very close to telling them at that point. Also, they ask me to come over during the day and when I say "I'm working" they're like "Oh....yeah!" heh heh. I guess it makes all parties involved happier that way.

I can see the parallel with the whole gay and coming-out-of-the-closet situation. I hope if it ever comes out for me, it will be like that! However, I'm sure my parents would pretend to make a big deal out of it just so they "look good" lol!

Ha ha, my mother found out when her best friend's husband turned out to be a regular of mine! I had no idea who he was, but he knew who I was! CREEPY. I am jealous of everyone who's parents are OK with it, my life would be so much easier if my parents were OK with ANYTHING I do.

I guess it depends on your parents. About 2 weeks after I started my mom asked me and I told her. Now I tell her stuff like this past Friday night when I fell asleep in the DR from 11-4 (practically the entire shift) and she said I should have slept in the club - I may have woken up with a couple dollars in my g. Oh my... and then she told my aunt and I guess they think its the funniest thing ever. My mom loves hearing my stripper stories. Its been 7 years now tho... took a while before I could really talk about work with my family.

that's funny... not sure how your mom is but I agree that maybe you should wait until you really have to... why stir up drama now?

Thats good that she reacted that way... it seems like an open door for you to tell her and if you're not ready just play along and joke about it and it would probably be pretty unspoken knowledge.

The things I'm doing with my money do make my mom proud though.... i've been on my own since 17 and have been paying for rent, bills, food, school ever since. I have money saved up in a money market account. I am paying for school. I am qualifying for school loans and am in the process of financing my dream car. I'm doing the things I've always wanted to do, 100% on my own.

My mom put herself through college and was on her own since 16, but she did it by working three jobs (serving, retail and work study).... so she's always encouraged me to do it in my own and be independent.

I had to deal with my bitch mother in law. Saying over dinner "So you're a stripper, when were you going to tell me?" Then she acted offended and hurt, any time she can milk attention from my husband she will. She's one of those back stabbing bible thumpers. man i hate her. ( well that turned into ranting?

Both my parents know, my mom says if she was younger she'd do it. My sis and I can tell everything. My Dad- I usually just tell him the funny stories

AAAAH! My mom's done this to me a few times, the "I'm joking but not really" voice. I honestly think she could handle it, but I'm just so afraid that she'll feel guilty or worried or something.

Wow,that is so cool. If you dance, you guys might work on a book together about what things have changed and what things have remained the same. This would be fascinating. If a book seems like too vast an underataking, start out with a story. Maybe you could take turns interviewing each other. Cheers!!! Harlow

^^I tottally dig that idea Harlow, im lovin' it......hmmm now i can daydream about the title while at my non-dancing job (i hate the term 'real job'...all jobs are real pssshh lol anyway)...

Harlow, i havent ever heard anyone say to me "wow that is so cool" EVER. im from a really tiny town smack in the bible belt, and it was known round town that my mom was an entertainer and i constantly had to hear comments like 1) there's the hookers daughter, or 2) hope she doesnt turn out like her mother....So even hearing some one that i dont know have a positive reaction on a forum to that fact just makes me feel so good...i always thought it was cool, and everyone else thought i was whore-spawn...Thanks Babe. =D

I agree. My parents are middle class accountants and would never support my dancing, which is why they will never get to know about it.

^ That is fantastic - i was going to ask if anyone has ever thought that their mom might have been a dancer herself in the past! I think if i have a daughter of course i'll recognize the signs and i can think of a warm and witty way of letting her know that i know.

i lied to my parents about it the first three months or so i did it. told them i was a tutor. my mom had her suspicions though. turns out she used to be a topless waitress, so i guess she could just tell or something, who knows.

when i was officially found out though was the worst. my aunt and uncle came to see me in a fashion show i was in, then took me out for sushi, and back to their house to play scrabble. they asked me what i was doing for a living now, i told them tutoring, and my aunt said. "that's funny. i heard from one of my friends that he saw you dancing at a strip club." SHIT!

i quit immediately out of embarrassment, but started again a few months later, told everyone in my family, and now it's no longer a subject of conversation. which is nice.
"If she wants to dance and drink all night, well there's no one that can stop her. She's going til the house lights come up or her stomach spills onto the floor. This night is gonna end when we're damn well ready for it to be over, worked all week long, and now the music is playing on our time. Yeah we do what we do to get by, and then we need a release!" - Against Me!, "Thrash Unreal"

I think it's because of the idea of "necessity". If everyone's poor, they see a job as a job. If everyone's well off enough to afford things without struggling too much, they have more "choices" when it comes to jobs, and can turn their noses up at certain ones.

My father definitely thinks that way.

My daughter is only 19 but has been dancing about a year. I know because the same time she was auditioning ..I mentioned she should audition somewhere(college expenses). So she told me she got hired. I've always known she's an alternative kind a gal so it suits her.
I love hearing her dressing room stories and general club stuff. We have a much better relationship because I don't think she's afraid to talk to me.
I do worry about safety and drugs so I keep track of her.
I'm always suggesting songs to dance to.
Her dad doesn't know(divorced) and would have a shit fit.
I have tons of respect for dancers. It is hard work and I think pole dancing is so fun to watch.

Careful with telling your mom. My mom made comments about maybe I should be a stripper, like my aunt. But she was just trying to appear hip and thought that I wouldn't ever consider dancing, so felt safe in making such a comment.

For some reason, everyone I knew had the impression that I was some kind of goody-two-shoes and was surprised that I became a dancer. My mom included.
