Neuromancer, William Gibson.
I don't have a favorite "adult" book, but my favorite book from my childhood was a wrinkle in time by madeline l'engle.
"Life and death, energy and peace. If I stop today it was still worth it. Even the terrible mistakes that I made and would have unmade if I could. The pains that have burned me and scarred my soul, it was worth it, for having been allowed to walk where I've walked, which was to hell on earth, heaven on earth, back again, into, under, far in between, through it, in it, and above."

My all time favourite book is "Where the Wild Things Are", by Maurice Sendak. No "grown up" book compares.

It's also wrong, by all indications. Brief history of Time was written 20 years ago. A lot has happened in physics since then. The "Phoenix Universe" hypothesis (as the collapsible/re-exploding universe is called) depends entirely on matter, at preasent there isn't enough in the universe to halt expansion, much less reverse it. Dark matter is the key, provided it exists. The jury is still out, but by the evidence we have, the universe will die with a shiver rather than a crunch.

Probably Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. I saw the film and loved it, so read the book, and its about 100000x better!
Actually, I reccomend you read all of his books. Just go out and buy them all now, lock yourself indoors and read them all. Especially Snuff and Choke too. Choke is being made into a film seen actually and has some pretty funny bits concerning the main charceter at a strip club.

I find it nearly impossible to choose just one..
- The Stranger by Albert Camus
- Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything - by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dunbar
- Lolita/Ada or Ardor by Nabokov
- Geek Love by Katherine Dunn
- The Solipsist by Henry Rollins
Eh, I could go on and on..

Cry To Heaven by Anne Rice
The Pact- Jodi Picoult
Suuuuuch a good book!
Super hard for me to pick but at the moment I guess I'd say Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky. I hope that doesn't sound pretentious, but it really blew my mind and was my introduction to my now favorite writer.
I'm confused, but the Chewbacca Truffle Shuffle cleared it up. - Emily
all of anne rice vampire novels, especially blood and gold, and pandora.
also the sleeping prophet by edgar cayce

A tie between Geek Love and House of Leaves.
My favorite book as a child was The Velveteen Rabbit. Still makes me misty-eyed.
Of all time? Probably The Giver by Lois Lowry.
