Default Bag Borrow Steal anyone try this yet?

This was mentioned on Sex and the City and I really like the idea of it; seems like a good solution for a new purse every month or so since things go out of style every season. I don't buy knock offs and would rather go without a purse--also I guess they offer insurance that protects against damage to the purse, jewelry or sunglasses. Some of the stuff is as low as 20 bucks a week rental, check out the link and let me know what ya think!

It seems like a rip off to me. Some of the items have a ridiculous 'rent' compared to how much you can actually buy it for.

I would be more likely to do it with a piece of the jewelry for an event vs. a bag or sunglasses (I would also end up scratching them)

I feel the same way. Plus I wear things pretty hard. My bag included. Knowing I was just borrowing it would stress me out.

I figure, all anyone "Needs" is a couple of grown-up bags. Not as many as celebs (who have the money AND get them for free anyways to get spotted wear/carrying whatever).

I heard about them years ago when they were first getting started... I have yet to sign up b/c I don't feel like it's worth it. Like Ahmeerah said, all you need is a few grown up bags. Personally, it was easier for me to invest in those few than rent a bunch.

Everybody at my high school did this. It's not scam but I'll never understand it, but then again I don't see the craze over designer anything.

I still think it's kind of expensive when you figure it all up. I'd rather just save and buy one.

I think it's a rip if you're talking a 50 dollar a week rental for a really nice bag, that's 200 a month.... wouldn't you rather just save up for three months, BUY your own bag that's 600 bucks, and if you get tired of it in a few months sell it on ebay for 450?

I just don't see the appeal.

I don't understand why people who obviously can't afford a bag like that would want to carry one. Hell, everyone you are trying to impress with it is going to know it's either fake or borrowed from the site. What's the point of that?

I wouldn't do it, for all the reasons mentioned. But I do admit it is a creative business idea.

Those people have to be raking in money hand over fist, I agree. First of all, they are probably buying bags wholesale (or used!) , but even if they aren't....

Let's say an 800 dollar bag is 50 dollars a week. Once that bag has been rented for 16 weeks, its paid for. Everything on top of that is pure profit. Plus you can buy the bag! So lets say in one year that bag gets rented out for 30 weeks of the year, they have made 2400 dollars off the bag, for a profit of 1600 dollars....then they can sell it through their site, probably in the nieghborhood of 600 dollars... so of one eigh hundred dollar bag, they've made a profit of 2,200 dollars....!! I'm sure the insurance that they pay on the bags is high and all but still, that's a great business model!

Am I the only admitted JAP on this site?

    I'm a member.

Though I will say that I've only borrowed jewelery and one or two evening bags from the site. Everyday bags I buy myself and don't see the site's prices as a good deal. Sunglasses I have to try on.

But the jewelery? The few evening purses? I have black tie events I go to in NYC every two months or so. Generally the same people are there. These are people who notice this stuff. My lone diamond bangle and few real gemstone rings would get tired fast.

    Warning- bragging ahead

Cigar bar in midtown. Johnny Damon's wife noticed 'my' fendi bag and started talking to me about how the NY store was sold out blah blah blah. The end of that story is that I was invited to join the yanks at a post game party later that week. Big deal to me as a huge portion of my income has gone towards my season tickets every year or six years now.

Another high was when Frida Giannini clearly noticed the (rented) gucci jewelery I was wearing, came over and made sure that a gucci fan such as myself surely must be on the list for the private sale at Gucci's NYC flagship later that week. I scored hot pink patent leather pumps at ove 50% off.

Sometimes having the good stuff makes people in that world accept you as their own.

That being said- I use that site. If there's something coming up and I want to look the part, it's golden. I borrow specific high end items for specific high end events.

But to borrow designer sunglasses for a week and send them back? I just don't get it. Or a bag that you could buy for three months worth of renting?

(yeah, I know, that last part makes me a total hypocrite. I'm ok with that).

If you want something that bad for everyday use, just buy it...

Katherine, what you use it for is the only thing that makes sense to me. I do not own any nice evening bags because I'd hardly use them. But my everyday bags I'm happy to own and they last for a while.

Katherine that TOTALLY makes sense... using it like that never occurred to me since I don't run in those social circles....hehehe....but now that you mention it it is totally worth it for circumstances like that!!!

I agree, that's a good reason to use that site! If I actually had events like that to go to on a monthly basis, shit... I'd do the same damn thing! I have a pretty nice collection of designer bags/shoes and a nice LiL collection of jewelry. But you're right, after awhile it would be obvious I was wearing the same pieces over and over!

I used their service about 3-4 years ago. The first month was fine. Then bags would be delayed. I'd want a bag for a week, put in a request and not get the next bag for like 3 weeks. I complained and got a month free. Then that month was still slow, so I cancelled. They continued to charge me repeatedly. Like 5 times in a month, it was a monthly rental price, idk about what they have now. So I called the place. I got the owner's number. First she was nice & said she'd clear it up, just fax info over. So I did, but it accomplished nothing. Then when I called back her assistant told me that she wasn't there. This went on for like 3 months and I lost a few hundred dollars. Maybe they've cleaned up their act, but idk. I'd advise against using them. Plus as everyone has said, you can just save up for a bit and buy the bag.

Umm no ....I can afford it quite well actually! (don't be so quick to make snap judgements) I clearly stated that since fashion changes every season (4 times a yr) that this borrowing of bags would be a good way to keep up with the trends. As for impressing someone; I have carried many different bags; well made and cuteness factor are the OVERT reasons for wanting the designer bags. I have never had anyone question my real Louis V's as fake or borrowed- why in the world would you think someone would think they were? I grew up in Vegas for christ's sake the mecca of extravagance and excess so this is doubtful at best.
