    Default massage therapist or cosmetology?

Which do you think is a better field to work in? I'm interested in doing nails, skin, waxing, or massage.

Under a massage license you will only do massage obviously.

Under an esthetician license you can do waxing, facials/skincare and make-up.

Under a cosmetology license you mostly focus on hair but you also learn manicure, pedicure, facials and waxing. You spend a VERY limited amount of time on these things though. So your training on those other things will be very basic but you can still specialize in those things if you so desire. Most upscale salons though hire esthetician's to do their facials and body waxing.

The things you are describing you would like to do fall more under esthiology than anything else. Esthiology implements some massage techniques under their license. However, if you decided to do nails you would have to get a separate license for that as it does not fall under esthiology.

The economy is not great right now. Think about what you really want to do. And under what license you can learn the most of that. One thing to also keep in mind is that people are cutting back on luxury services. And unfornuately, massage, skincare and nails are under that category.

    cosmetology.

Why? Because women will get their hair and nails done regardless of how things are, but won't even think about a massage.

How do I know this? I'm a licensed massage therapist that is now working at the mall because I made no money at the salon/spa I was working at. Noone came in to get massages...but women were coming in to get their hair done in droves.

I know a lot of girls who have come back to dancing lately after trying to work as a massage practitioner. There doesn't seem to be enough work.

Not a very big one. I'm in a college town in east tennessee (not knoxville). The 'fish tank' (Tennessee Aquarium) is about the only thing this city has going for it.

    Massage Therapy.

You can do it anywhere anytime with fewer materials/equipment. It's easy to travel with it and make money wherever you are. Everyone wants a massage. You can also barter your services EASY.

But everyone NEEDS their hair done.

    (in their opinion.)

I would imagine being a massage therapist can be frustrating depending where you work. I would get sick of people trying to negotiate funny massages.

Well I bet I'd like you better if you massaged me than if you waxed me. Although I have gotten attatched to a particular nail lady I had and also a waxer... Maybe the question is what would fulfill you more? Or maybe you can do both! It seems like that kind of career might not be too time consuming, maybe you can learn one while working the other, and be an all-service salon lol

I guess it must in the area you're in. Business is very slow to non-existent in this area. Noone is hiring LMT's because of the slowdown, and I have interviewed for jobs/I.C. opportunities that have been either canned or 'put on hold' because things are very slow...But the salons/spas are always hiring stylists and nail techs.

^^^ The LMTs that make $ and have freedom are the ones who freelance -- much like personal trainers. Or they have a regular LMT gig (for benefits) but then do it on the side as well for actual money. Usually in these industries you don't work 40 hrs a week for benefits anyways partly (I'm assuming this is the reason) because the jobs are physical.
