Here's my idiot question: how does one find out one's credit score? (Hey, I just turned 20...so it's not THAT bad that I don't know this. I've never made a large purchase before, so it isn't exactly relevant to me yet...)
When you apply for a credit card, whenever they send you the decision (usually a denial, can't say for approval), it says you can write to the bureau with which the credit card works (it will be Experian, TransUnion, or EquiFax) and they will send you your credit report for free. You have to do it within 60 days though.
Another way is to go to freecreditreport.com and pay to find out your score. There are other websites that will do this for a fee as well. Just google "my credit score" or something along these lines.
Also, you can apply for a loan where they need to check your credit and they will show you the credit report. Car loan is perfect.
Hope this helps!
freecreditreport.com isn't free? Fuck that. Guess I'm voting "No idea."
I always pay my credit card fees before they're due though...so does that mean I have perfect credit? Or is credit something you have to build up from the ground?
FREECREDITREPORT IS A SCAM AND RIP OFF.
For REAL free credit reports go to
For scores go to
Or if you have a WaMu card like the OP you get a free monthly FICO from Transunion BUT. I got my WaMu FICO and it was 80 points less than the score that was pulled for my mortgage preapproval just a couple weeks later and nothings changed on my TU report so I dont even trust that one.
Yeah. what AL said about it being a scam. Fuckers took the name 'free'!!! The government really will give you 3 free credit reports a year (or rather one per reportiing bureau)... that's what annualcreditreport.com is, your real, official, legally given free report. Pisses me off that freecr was able to puill that shit.
But yeah, go to annualcreditreport. NO STRINGS ATTACHED![]()
Thank you so much you guys!

I can't just vote one, cos all three have very different ratings... one is very good (in the 700's), on is fair (upper 600's) and one is waaaaaaay retarded (500's)
Use your median score... thats what I did.

Yea the WaMu one is only from one agency but it's still nice to see it go up! =]
Also, it's advisable that you DON'T pay your credit card balances in full each month so that the creditors know that you're responsible and can pay off a loan (no matter how much) over a period of time. This builds a good reputation for you, hence better score. Make sure you're only using less than 50% of credit available to you (total credit on ALL cards)

If you charge $200 to a card, go home and pay $200 that doesnt show you can handle credit.
If you charge $200 to a card, and make payments every month over the minimum AND keeping the balance under 30% (not 50%) that shows the creditors that you can handle credit.
Best is to ALWAYS have a small revolving balance (3-10%) and continue to make small payments and let the bank make some interest. If theyre not making interest whats the point of them giving you more credit?
No. It was from the same agency. WaMu said my Transunion FICO is 602. BUT when I had my Transunion FICO pulled for my mortgage it was actually 688. It gave the wrong FICO for the same agency. Therefor I do not trust it.
WaMu supposedly uses the same formulation as FICO but obviously something if off because they're getting an entirely different score for the same CRA.

667 according to FICO via Wamu. Not bad considering I had a '0' credit score this past June according to several motorcycle dealerships and banks.
Hmm...I'm poed ! I tried to get my free annual credit report, and they asked me some weird questions for "security" and apparently Ianswered them wrong so they won't give me my report? I'm trying the myfico right now...

banks are in the business of credit card accounts in order to earn money from the interest they can charge on outstanding balances. When you pay off the balance in full, you 'deprive' the bank of this income stream. Thus banks are much happier if a credit card holder regularly carries a balance that is 25-35-40% of the credit limit as long as regular payments are made in a timely manner.I'm not sure this is accurate advice. Wouldn't a creditor like to see the payment made immediately and consistently rather than consistently and slightly delayed? Doesn't make much sense...
That happened to me. MyFico is not where you get your reports tho. You need to send some stuff into annualcreditreport to get your reports - theres a form there - you need to send a utility bill, license and SS card. I had to do that to get mine the first time around.
I tried again and it worked. They had a stupidly phrased question, have you owned a 3 series BMW in the last year? I put no because I had that car for literally 3 months before I got into a freak accident ( I dropped my cell phone, went to pick it up and my shoulder got stuck under the wheel....I couldnt get up or steer or anything and I crashed into two parked cars...owned by a husband and wife, unfortunately) and havent had that car in like 5 years...
i use whenever i feel like randomly checking my or my husband's credit score. it is FREE and you can use it daily.
my credit score is CRAP, but we use my husbands name on everything. his is really good. i financed some plastic surgery to build my credit and i am finally getting somewhere. yay!

Yet again, the only place to get your credit score is myfico.com
I havent been to CK in a while and just went. My Transunion score is 688. According to CK its 628. Thats a HUGE difference.
Thats odd. Theyve never asked me such personal things - usually its who do you have a auto loan through and whats the payment.
Problem is they are trimerge reports. They do not contain all the information from your actual reports and they mark things differently.
The ONLY place to get REAL credit reports is annualcreditreport.com (through the actual CRA)
Ask me how I know?
OK, Ill tell you. In the last year Ive gotten my score up over 100 points... I know about ALL the companies, scores, tricks and tips.

^^oh, I believe you . I just don't think it's a scam. But that's awesome you've gotten your credit score up so high.
