Default Question about choosing a doctor

My health insurance plan is a PPO. So, I have a pretty gigantic list of doctors to chose from. I need to go back on anti-depressants. What type of doctor should I chose for that? General Practice? It can't be a psychiatrist since "mental health" isn't really covered. But, is there a type of physician that I would be better off going to? I know I will be asked questions before it's decided what type of anti-depressant to give me... but I want to make it as easy and fast as possible.

Hmmm...is it covered if you get a refferal from a General Practice doctor to a psychiatrist?

If you know what anti depressants work for you you could go to a GP and ask for them, but if you don't I would reccommend paying for a visit to a psychiatrist out of pocket. If you call your local university they might be able to refer you to a cheaper program OR you could go to County Psych, althought that's kind of a disturbing experience, but it's free.

I use my OB/GYN as my primary care provider. My Dr. can and has prescribed antidepressants for me, so I know this is possible in my area and with my insurance provider.

I'm nervous about this because this is a new health insurance plan and I'm worried about issues. Is there some sort of site where I can look up doctors who will deal with the issue instead of sending me all over town for seperate opinions? Or, is it possible to tell whatever doctor I see to piss up a rope and go see another one without repercussions? I'm just paranoid because I got this insurance a month ago and while I answered truthfully on their questionaire (no anti-depressants in the last 5 years), I don't want it to become an issue. They didn't ask if I'd EVER had issues with depression, so I didn't give them that information. To be completely honest, I went off the meds because of the the stereotypes of people on them. I just don't want them to think that I signed up for the insurance plan knowing that I had some issue that needed to be medicated. I don't want them to drop me.

Just see a GP, they prescribe meds for depression all the time. You shouldn't have an issue.

If you're really concerned and you know what meds and what dose you need you could buy them off the internet

^Is that even legal? I guess if they give me a problem about it, I'll PM you for more info... but I'd rather have a physician around to watch me. I haven't taken them for so long, I don't know what I would be prescribed. I only know that when I was finally prescribed one with something for social anxiety, it helped a ton.

I guess it wouldn't be such a big deal to see another dr if the first one is a jerk about it, right? So... General Practice Dr?

Yeah, get a GP. Most of them will right you a prescription faster than you can imagine. Especially if you've used them in the past and make it clear you're going to be a repeat customer.

If you WANT to see a psych dr. but can't under your plan look into your County's mental health dr.s.
Many counties offer free, and fairly good if not better than average, mental health care. I went through a period of time where I was depressed to the point where I was white slipped into a psych ward. But before that happened I was taken to a local crisis center. I had health insurance at the time, but they wouldn't cover mental health. So, the crisis center got me hooked up with the psychologist and psychiatrist. Things got worse before they got better. But all in all it was the greatest thing for me (and what ended up saving my life).
I would look into it. There are almost always provisions from the county to help people in your position. And they respond well to people who take the initiative.
If you don't want to go that route go through GP. Most will prescribe general anti-depressants for you. If he won't then he should "transfer you out" and that should be covered.
    I'm not who I say I am.

Be careful: you can sometimes (often!) be turned down for insurance, for having bought anti-depressants.

I was worried this would happen to me, but I paid cash for the Dr's appointment (did NOT do it through my insurance) and got my prescription online through a Canadian company (Jandrugs.com, very fast and reliable) and when I applied for insurance recently it didn't show up on their background check.
