Lightbulb Over-The-Counter Meds & Panic Attacks

For the gals who have anxiety problems... have any of you experienced heightened anxiety and panic attacks when taking certain OTC meds? I've noticed that DayQuil makes me really, REALLY anxious, moody, and my panic attacks are more severe and frequent. I haven't done any research, but is there an ingredient in certain meds that make our symptoms worse? What medications do you take for allergies/colds that don't cause this increased anxiety? It takes me DAYS to recover and become semi-normal again after I have taken my DayQuil. HELP!

I'm guessing that it's the pseudoephedrine, or maybe phenylephrine (a lot of cold meds are replacing the pseudoephedrine becasue of all the meth labs cropping up.

That's what I was thinking, but DayQuil is the only thing that works for me. It isn't worth this crap, though.

I did notice that when I was taking a lot of cough syrups and what-not trying to get over a massive cold about this time last year. But I was also back and forth abusing cocaine still and I could have had that reaction due to that .. I'm really not sure.

Mily that happens to me... there is a line of products I forget what they are called now... I will google and repost in a sec...they are medicines like Dayquil but safe for people who have high blood pressure... so because of that they don't contain any stimulants... thats what I use...I dont have that condition of course but it avoids the jitters... I can drink redbull and all that but the meds give me anxiety

Corcidon HPB they have a whole line of products

I saw a thing on 20/20 about people getting high of of coricidin. My aunt and sister have done this. They actually keep it behind the counter here in florida because of that.

^^ ^^ My sister recently told me she did that a bunch her first years of high school. It basically simulated a panic attack if done by itself, but they would do shots to balance out the jittery effects of the coricidin. Kind of like the really, really poor man's speedball?

Dayquil use to do the same thing to me. I don't know what it has it now but it use to keep me awake and pretty hyper. I guess it's intended not to make you go asleep unlike it's counterpart, Nyquil.

Haha count me in for that. I use to when I was like 14 or so. It had to be the cough and cold one and you would take like 4 pills at once and you would feel like if you were really drunk. I quit that shit though after my sister over-dosed and had a seizure. So yeah even though nothing happened to me . It's pretty stupid to do.

Kinda scary though because you have to wonder if someone accidently "forgot" they took it, what would happen?

Coricidin contains pseudoephedrine (stimulant) plus dextromethorphan (look up "dxm" or "dexing" if you want the sordid details; it's a hallucinogen.) Taking over the normal dose of pseudoephedrine is dangerous, though, so in order to take the psychoactive dose of dextromethorphan in coricidin, you'd have to take a dangerous dose of the stuff. If you want to get high off cough medicine, here are some useful links. (I don't endorse doing so, but if you're interested, you will, so do it safely!)

Awright, drug safety bear over and out. :-)

My sister and aunt would take up to 40 a day. The cough and cold stuff like iris said. Both were living with my poor mother and telling her they had colds and abusing the stuff. My aunt would be eating and fall asleep in whatever she was eating. My poor mom found coffee poured in the drawer in the bottom of the stove and one time she said she fell asleep in her recliner and felt wet on her forehead and woke up to my aunt standing over her and she was like what the hell. My aunt was like god told me to bless everyone with holy water. Thank god they are both over that shit.

I can see how it would trigger anxiety problems, although it has not yet with me. (And I have them.) Pseudoephedrine is really "speedy" for me. When I've taken more, ahem, recreational things with that effect it's definitely freaked me out.

yes these ingredients are bad for people with anxiety and also dont mix well with ssri medications.

ask your pharmacist for an alternative.
