Default I dont want to see my psychiatrist anymore

I have been seeing him since I was 14 and I think that on the most part I havent really gotten anything out of the therapy.

I want to see a psychologist or alternatively I dont want therapy at all.

I made this decision the other day. Every time I see him I feel worse afterwards because he obviously doesn't approve of the way I am living my life. I am fine with it and I dont want to sit there feeling uncomfortable with him anymore.

So after so many years do I owe him an explanation about why I dont want to see him anymore?

I'd usually lean towards a no.. but since he's been your doctor that long, and is probably concerned about your welfare, I would just tell him you're looking for alternative treatments as you want to start a new chapter in your life. If he's not giving you what you need, move on. He's a professional.

IMO someone who has kept you on antidepressents since you were 14 is not the doctor for you.

Why would a psychiatrist "not approve" of your lifestyle? That's unprofessional and is not their place to tell you what you should do with your life. I just started seeing a psychiatrist and he seemed intrigued by what I did but that was it. Didn't give me any personal opinions.

he has always been like that. i was considering an alternative to studying at university at one stage - i was even considering beauty therapy etc and he told me that things like that were basically things that stupid people did. He is very snobby and opinionated like that.

That's awful! Who knows if those views are influencing his treatment of you. I once had a therapist who judged me based upon the fact that I danced. Her grand solution was for me to quit dancing and work at Hooters. I explained to her that I needed to work as little as possible so that I could focus on grad school, but that practical bit of info didn't register. I hope you find someone who works for you.

What, because working at Hooters is magically not degrading? *rolls eyes*

I don't think you owe him anything but if you feel comfortable with it you could tell him. Doctors like to know what happened to their patients.

You really might want to see a psychologist - they can still be judgemental prats but they're not medical doctors who are taught to put you in a box then give you the appropriate pill. I'm not anti meds but really you need a more well-rounded approach and while theoretically psychiatrists do this... they don't.

Ugh! What a dickhole. Just tell him "Thanks for the good times." And send him a Xmas card this year.

The break up was going to happen, he knew that - he has the tools to handle it anyway if not. (You've never seemed 'damaged' and certainly not in a way that might require therapy for the rest of your life!)

    You're all fixed! Yay

Just tell him the truth. It's business, tell him you have decided to discontinue your services/business with him and it's b/c he's too judgemental. His loss, you can go to another therapist who will probably be more understanding and glad to have your business.

I use to have a female therapist who was very understanding. She said she had friends in college that danced as a means to an end. It's work..

i want to see a psychologist rather than psychiatrist. i dont agree with the psychiatrists theory on treatment and talking therapy does nothing for me.

i think cognitive behavioural therapy might be worth a try so i can get off these SSRI drugs for good and learn to manage my anxiety and panic attacks without drugs.

Wow, what a dick. Honestly, I wouldn't bother saying anything...he sounds like the type of guy who would try to make you feel guilty or something for wanting to move on. Just stop going, he'll get the idea.

Ah, that's what I was thinking of! I've lived with PTSD/depression/GAD (some combination of the three but certainly PTSD; self-diagnosing here) most of my life and despite seeing one crap psychologist and a bunch of cousellors I really am not functional in my life - thought I do a pretty good job of faking it. Cognitive behavioural therapy sounds like something that might actually work, rather than taking meds whose side effects are as bad as the problem

    Jaizine..

Wow, I am actually quite horriffied to hear you have been going to him so long... the goal of a good therapist is to treat you as needed....I dont believe that unless you have SEVERE mental issues you need to be in therapy for that long, and after maybe a few years he should have thought that he wasnt helping you and reffered you out...

That said, make sure you get proper medical care in going of SSRIs....you're probably chemically dependent on them and will have serious side effects if not weaned off...

If it's any encouragement to you, I too have severe anxiety and am able to handle it with tecnhiques I've learned on my own and in therapy. I have a prescription for valium in case I have a major panic attack, but I go through less than one bottle (30 pills) each year even though I have a monthly prescription I could renew if I wanted...

    Good luck!

It might make sense to tell him that his judgments are a big reason for you taking your business elsewhere -- he ought to reconsider himself.

that's really encouraging to hear. i dont want to depend on SSRIs for the rest of my life. i will def wean off them slowly and i want to learn some ways to cope with anxiety before i try to go off them. i want to be off them for good this time so i have to plan it well.
