    Default Eating at night

I've gained some weight recently, so before it becomes a problem (i.e. a lot of weight) I'm determined to lose it and get back to my optimal fitness level. To do this, I'm examining my exercise and diet.

In general, I get enough exercise in the form of cardio and moderate weight training. Although I've slacked off a bit since the semester started, I'm stepping up my exercise.

Looking at my diet, I eat pretty damn well. I'm a pescatarian, eat lots of vegetables, and no dairy except for yogurt. I also have Celiac disease so I can't eat wheat, white flour, barley, rye, etc. But in examining how I eat, I realized I do one thing VERY wrong : I eat late at night. Sometimes a lot. I eat high-calorie foods like peanut butter on rice cakes or bananas, almonds, etc.

This is a bad habit I developed in high school 4-5 years ago, which wasn't such a problem when I weighed 90 lbs. But now, it's really not helping my body, and it's making me feel out of control and ashamed. I feel like I'm sabotaging myself every time I do this.

Does anyone else have this problem of eating at night? How did you break this habit? What deals or agreements did you make with yourself so that you stopped doing this? I really need help! Thank you!

I do the same thing sometimes. I find it helps when I've eaten smaller meals all throughout the day (so I'm not starving by nighttime) or when I stay busy. I especially don't eat at night if I'm working.

I plan out one healthy low cal snack for late night- I like to munch. That way I won't tear through my whole fridge!

I am also guilty of this. It is really bad. My aunt is a dietician and she told me that if I get hungry before bed I should have a protein shake. So I try to do that now.

Def stay away from carbs at night.

I gained a ton when I started eating at night. It's crazy how your body adapts and becomes hungry at night when you let yourself eat, and vice versa. Once you train your body and tell it that food isn't an option after 8, you will stop seeing it as an option. It's hard at first but so worth it, especially with the holidays coming up no use in extra snacking.

I recently bought cashews and after a handful of those, I was not hungry for a really long time. I keep snacks throughout the day like- cherry tomatoes, grapes, strawberries, celery, cheese cubes, ham cubes, bell pepper strips, watermelon- and snack on those. I don't really eat sit down meals. I also like tea and coffee, which speed up the metabolism. Or you can make a smoothie with fat free milk and instant coffee and sugar, or fruit, and it whips up really thick and is very filling.

These are really good ideas. They've been helping, so thank you!

I read something else that's helped me to get better about this in the past week or so : apparently, the way sumo wrestlers get so big is that they eat mostly protein during the day, then eat TONS of rice (carbs, obviously) at night to put fat over their muscles. Ew.

That created a really strong incentive for me to stop.

I have done this for years...off and on. When I cut the habit it's because Ive gone to sleep early a couple nights in a row so you basically quit cold turkey. its just a bad habit I get back into once in a while due to stress or whatever. : /

I work out about 4-5 hours before bed really hard--one or two specific muscle groups for light weight+high rep. weight training with several different exercises. I do 20-45 minutes of mostly low intensity cardio (low intensity= fat burning, high intensity= cardio) + a little high intens. cardio for my heart's health.

After my workout I will eat something like a HUGE salad with different veggies and a 3 oz chicken breast (about the size of your palm) w/ low fat (not fat free!) dressing.

Basically, work out hard, stretch well, and eat balanced meals and snacks in moderation (i use the zone diet approach...it's amazing), and before you know it your appetite will be gone at night.

I've tried every trick and fad, and this is the only thing that has really given me results that STAY for longer than a couple of weeks.
Eating right after my workouts and going to bed within 3 hours after pretty much keeps me well behaved.

I got into that habit when I was a dancer. I would go home after work and eat cereal. I haven't been getting up as much as I use to but I still get up and have a snack of some sort.
