    Default Home Births vs Hospitals

I am planning on having a baby withing 1-2 years. Sooner, if I can get everything in order. I just watched the video advocating home births, and it was great! I live in Chicago, and due to malpractice/liability I understand that it is not practiced here. I know that another poster had a home birth, and would appreciate some info. Cost, etc. Also, is it legal for me to have a home birth if I do use a midwife that is not licensed? Do I "register" actually giving birth? Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, some women have c-sections claiming that the belly will be flatter, birth will be easier, less chance of urinary incontenence later in life. What was your experience with that like?

I would love to hear both sides as well as other tips for pregnancy and labor.

    Thanks!

You can have a hospital birth with a midwife too.
I'm glad I did as I had complications with my third (she was born blue/not breathing/cord tight around her neck).

Anyone who advocates a Csection as an birthing option is an ass.

I am very curious about c-sections as well. Some people claim that it is easier on their bodies , or schedules, as they plan it, and many often have a tummy tuck. Im just curious about experiences. Everyone is different.

It is more profitable for a hospital to do a c-section, and they can "sell" that by saying there are less complications. I am very curious as to women's experiences physically with both of these. Ideally, I think I would like a water birth myself.

    C-sections are major surgery.

    Things to keep in mind:
    1. Not everyone who has kids needs a tummy tuck. How can you know if you would or wouldn't ahead of time?

    2. The surgery cuts through your abdominal wall. Try working out that area after it's been hacked in half. It's a lot easier to tone the area after a natural birth.

    3. C-section out you at risk for adhesions. Adhesions are actually bands of scar tissue that form inside your abdomen or pelvis after surgery. As your body heals from surgery, this scar tissue connects organs together, causing them to stick to one another. Abdominal adhesions are a common outcome of any pelvic or abdominal surgery. In fact, they develop in 93% of people who have undergone pelvic surgery. They are especially common after cesarean sections. Complications of adhesions include bowel obstruction and infertility.

    4. Babies are affected by the anethesia which can result in breathing probelms and general reactions to the medications used.

    5. Risks to the mother include increased bleeding leading to the need for a blood transfusion, infection in the incision/uterus/nearby organs, reactions to the anethesia, injuries to the bladder/bowel, blood clots in the legs/pelvic organs/lungs. Other risks are urinary tract infections and decreased bowel function.

How people can see this as an elective/optional choice is beyond me.

^ Ditto. I think it's absolutely bonkers! I think Dr's need to step up & be more responsible and stop letting people have them for silly lil reasons. I think they should only be used for emergencies or breaches, etc on those lines.

Honestly, when I had my daughter two years ago... I gave natural birth, no epideral or any drugs... IT'S NOT AS BAD AS SOME WOMEN MAKE IT OUT TO BE! And the recovery wasn't as bad either...

In a bio class I was told that birth pains are like menstral cramps...just much more intense, is that true? the teacher (who was a little Italian woman with kids) said that if you have really bad cramps during ur period you're more likely to have bad birth pains and vice versa. True, anyone?

Its obviously no picnic though. My fave analogy "You try getting something the size of a watermelon out of something the size of a lemon"

I've had 4 hospital births and am now preparing for a home birth. I'm renting a birthing tub with spa jets and all, looks super nice!
I'm due in a lil' over 6 weeks so I'll let you know how it goes afterwards!
There are different rules in different states- so you really need to check into the laws of your state as far as homebirth midwives.

As for the pain... in my pregnancies I've sought medication for pain relief- this will be the first birth I plan naturally. I know I can do it because with my last two by the time I asked for the epi- I was pushing the next hour... so I know that when it gets so bad that I'm wanting relief- my baby will *hopefully* be here soon!
There are ways to cope with the pain- mostly, don't think of it as pain. The mind is a powerful tool. Read a book on hypnobirthing, read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, read Birthing from Within, Ina May's spiritual midwifery. Books like these really help you to look at the "pain" in a different way. Plus I hear a birthing tub is amazing pain relief!

Of course things can go wrong in a labor- so be sure to have your plan B, of transferring to a hospital if an emergency arises. Remember that in a hospital when a doctor decides to do a c-section it takes 20-30 minutes to set up the room... if you're at home and your midwife says something is wrong and you need to transport to a hospital- call the hospital when you leave the house, if you live within 20 minutes of a hospital- then really the time difference isn't so bad. Just to put your mind at ease as I know some people freak out wondering what happens if something goes wrong.

Homebirth c-section rate is 1-2%... hospital c-section rate is around 30% depending on the hospital some are higher or lower.

And as Sirona said- YES you can totally plan an awesome fully natural birth in a hospital. But do check with your hospital as for what they allow- if they'll allow you to sit in a tub (some hossies have tubs), if they'll allow music, dim light, whatever it is you want to set the mood for your labor. If they will allow you to eat and drink freely.
Ok, I could go on forever about this, just do the research and Good luck for whenever you do have your baby

I had my daughter in a birth center with no drugs of any kind. I HIGHLY recommend it. I didn't go to the center until I was, like, 7 cm dialated, so I did a lot of the labor on my own, in my house. Labor pains are more intense than menstrual cramps, you know when you throw up and your body sort of seizes and you can't control the heaving (sorry if this is grossing anyone out) well it's sort of like that, your uterus cramps down, it's pushing your baby down and out, and so it's painful during that minute or whatever, and then the pain leaves and you get to breath for a bit. Of course every one is different, I know women who don't find it painful at all.

If you properly research your midwives and/or your birthing center you should be just as safe as a hospital. You need to ask a lot of questions about what they do as far as hospital transfers and all of that if a complication arises. I needed some oxygen a few times after I gave birth because of exhaustion, and they had that there, they were constently checking my blood pressure and statistics and everything. I felt very safe.

Thanks for the movie I did see your thread. Previous posters have mentioned actually doing the home or water births, and I am looking for experiences with birthing.

I really love hearing everyones real-life experiences though. Taking care of my body is important to me, and I want to make the best choices.

Nina- Please share! I love hearing about this. BTW- how was your recover? Meaning, after the baby was born, how long did it take to flatten belly, return to prior shape?

Also, do you guys mind sharing the cost for the birth? I found a place here that would do it for $3100.00 plus the cost of the hospital if I chose to have it there which was $2500.00 and came with pool, and lab work would be a separate cost. For home the pool rental would be $250.00

Oops... this is what happens when I just skim and dont read. Only really read the title...

I gave birth in a hospital. It was the worst, painful, unfun, drug me up (even tho I said no) take my baby away for the first hour, horrible experience of my life.

Heres a great place for experiences

    Im a babycenter-aholic.

I would like to have a home birth, but I must have an epidural. I didn't find the hospital that bad, but it wasn't great either. The fact that they come in bothering you at night is very annoying. If my blood pressure is OK, then why the hell are they buggin me about taking it every 6 hours or whatever. There are only a couple positives with being in a hospital, epidurals, and being able to kick the baby out at night to the nursery if you choose to so you can sleep. Hospitals are great if you at increased risk for complications or have a breech baby, but if you feel you are able to do it w/o pain management I would go for the birthing center. I assume this is your first baby, so you may want to go to a hospital, as you don't really know how you will handle the pain until you are in labor. I wouldn't want to be in complete misery and just want to die because I couldn't stand the pain. I wouldn't want to bring a baby in the world feeling like that. Anywho, you really just have to decide for yourself.

I don't know if it is legal to have a baby at home w/o any medical help at all. They call it "free birthing." Do not have a C-section unless it is medically necessary.

Whatever you decide I am sure you will be ok, and if you really want a home birth, then I would do it.

Everyone is different. Just want to throw that out there.
Some people it's a matter of weeks. Most it takes longer.
I think with each pregnancy it gets a little tougher.

    Yeah that ^
With my first baby I was in size 0 jeans again after 4 weeks.
Second baby it took me 6 weeks.
    Third baby about 6 weeks.
Fourth baby about 4 months! Though I looked good about 2 months after, I wasn't my usual skinniness till 4 months.

Nursing also really helps to lose the weight after.

As for costs.. my homebirth MW charges 2650, the tub I'm renting is 250. If I wanted a diagnostic ultrasound that would've been around 200. But unless I am concerned, I'm not getting one of those. My MW does have an ultrasound machine in her office, but she doesn't do the diagnostic u/s.
I know the costs are different all over the country, the going rate in Phx is between 2500-3500.
Prenatal care with a midwife is very different than with an OB in my opinion. The best way I can describe it is.. each appointment feels like a celebration of the pregnancy, where with an OB it tends to feel like it's monitoring this disease called "pregnancy" lol. If that makes sense.

Whether homebirth, birth center, or hospital birth- definitely look into having a midwife

I'm doing a natural birth at home with a direct entry midwife. I'll use my own tub (it's a garden tub so it's big) to give birth in. I had my son at a birth center in a tub with Certified Nurse Midwives 4 years ago and I had my daughter in the hospital with an epidural (and other drugs they kept giving me!) 8 years ago. I like the natural birth at the birth center better but I still wanted to give birth at home. I really hated rushing to the birth center at 5 am and I want to be able to birth comfortably in my own space. Natural birth does hurt but the pain can be a good thing because it motivated me to push my son out fast. One push and I was done. It hurt too bad for me to do it more than once! Plus once the baby is out, the pain miraculously stopped. It was great. He was born much more alert (he picked his head up and looked right into my eyes when I pulled him out and onto my chest!) and I was able to walk out of there to go home in a few hours. I was up making dinner that night.

As long as there is a hospital a reasonable distance away, you are having a normal healthy pregnancy, and you have a plan in place just in case, home birthing is a perfectly safe alternative. I wish the natural act of giving birth wasn't such a medical procedure as a matter or course. I mean if you are having complications or are high risk then yeah, you need medial intervention but otherwise, let your body do what human female bodies have done for thousands of years!

ETA - my midwife is charging us $2200 and she comes to our house for all prenatal visits. She does the usual blood work, urinalysis, and whatever else you get at an OB visit.

I had hospital deliveries with all three of mine but I had a Nurse Midwife.
    She was phenomenal!

She was from England where she had been doing home births since '71.
I can't say enough good stuff about her.
I was able to have a delivery I wanted (no epidural, no drugs, minimal episiotomy, real low key atmosphere, delivery in a semi-upright position, etc).

I had 3 hospitals births and they were all good. I could't see myself having a home birth I know that was how it was done alongtime ago but I already want to be in the hospital if something goes wrong.

Check out the home birth videos on youtube.

The prior health of the mother is much more important to the health of the baby than the birth method chosen.

Start taking folic acid and calcium supplements now if you are not already on them and make sure you are in good physical shape before you get pregnant. Pregnancy and labor are hard on the body.
