Default need help with kitty training!

this post isnt for me, it's for my friend who has a kitty. i dont know much about having them as pets, since i've only lived with them for a few months at most.

so my friend has a spazzy kitty that goes nuts on everything. it doesnt bother him, but it is annoying other people in the house.
    the kitty:
    * jumps all over the furniture and sort of attacks it
    * attacks people's feet (mostly biting)
    * wakes everyone up at 5am because she wants to go outside and jumps on their beds.
    * if she is sitting in your lap and you're petting her, she will randomly playfully attack you with bites, which can be a bit too hard sometimes.

she can open door knobs (which in that house shut pretty darn well) and is not the least bit bothered by having water sprayed on her, so that hasnt worked. i recommended that when she bites, to bite her back on the ear (not very hard), which is what my other friend did to train her kitty.

any suggestions for this nutty cat would be helpful. the cat is about 1-2 years old.

This cat sounds like a nuisance..I personally don't do ANY animal that "bites". Get rid of it! Besides there are many other cats/kittens available at an animal shelter that DON't do any of the things you mentioned that need a good home! IMO

as far as the biting...any time the cat bites...immediately put it off your lap and ignore it. Totally. It will eventually learn that biting leads to no attention. or, and im not a huge fan of this, but if all else fails...lightly (i mean lightly) flick the cat in the nose when it bites.

As for the attacking...try spraying the furniture with anti scratching stuff (they sell it at pet stores and it wont harm the furniture, i've used it). or for a little while if you dont mind, put double sided tape on the furnitre where the cat usually attacks it. it will hate it and learn to avoid it.

Try locking the cat out of the bedrooms to it cant jump on people at 5am.

As for the feet thing, no clue. its not uncommon for cats to do that, they are trying to play.

Neutering/spaying and declawing kittens calms them down BIG time!

Declawing IS cruel.Neutering/spaying has actual health benefits. Declawing does not. It is just mutilating an animal for your own convenience.

Your cats LOVED it? Sorry..I used to do them and I assure you they did NOT. Any more then you would enjoy having your fingers cut off at the first knuckle.

To train...1)make sure she is spayed 2)dont let her outside anymore..indoor cats are healthier, safer and live longer 3) stop indulging her...when she bites say NO loudly and put her somewhere(like the bathroom) by herself for @ 10 minutes. When you let her back out...act like nothing happened. She does these things to get attention and because she hasnt been taught the proper way to play.

Any home that would throw away an animal instead of training them correctly isnt a good home.

I was being a smartass when I said that "my cats loved it"...

They are inside cats and rarely go outside... except when I'm gardening for 15 minutes a day or so. My furniture looks much better now that they have been declawed. Although they had a scratching post, they loved to tear up my love seat. My love seat was their scratching post of choice. No matter how many times I picked them up and brought them to the post. Anyway, they still love me after their combo spay/neuter and declaw, and I love them, too... After the surgery, they are still incredibly affectionate to me... They still fight each other, lick each other, cuddle together, take dumps in the kitty litter, eat each others food... They just don't F*ck up my couch anymore...

well I guess to some people a couch is worth more than than your pets health and well being. My cat still occasionally claws my couch, but I would NEVER consider declawing them.

There is a reason most adoption agencies, and even most shelters won't let you adopt a cat unless you promise not to declaw them.

Do some research on the effects of declawing on cats.

From someone who used to DO them...yes its really that bad. We basically would cut off the cats "fingers" at the first knuckle, then sew the hole up. A lot of cats thrash when they wake up from effects of anesthesia, fear and extreme pain. Stitches(or surgical glue) tears and blood goes everywhere. Cats are afraid to walk for days after because of the intense amount of pain (imagine how much pain you'd be in if your fingers and toes were chopped and you had to balance on them to move?)

Plus declawed cats are more likely to bite since their main form of defense has been taken away.

Dont feel bad...not everyone knows. Now you do. Some vets will tell you, some wont(because it is more money for them). I refused to do them after a very short time. And the vets I worked for did everything to convince people not to...but in the end they didnt want it done by a money hungry surgeon with shakey hands and one foot in the grave(our main competitor at the time)

And yes...some cats adjust well and live perfectly happy lives.I have a declawed cat myself..though he was that way when I got him,I didnt do it...and hes as happy as a fat ol pussycat can be! It just isnt worth it and isnt something I"d ever do or recommend since I've seen (and sadly done ) firsthand the painand torture it causes for no good reason.

well, wow. i've gotten some good advice on here! my friend loves this cat way too much to part with it, which is causing problems with the other people in the house.

when i was over the cat was about to bite and i said loudly, 'no!' which stopped nutty kitty in her tracks before i even did anything. this kitty is not declawed and she has been spayed.

hopefully i'll get the chance to talk to my friend in the next few days and we'll see how this pans out. i'm not sure if they have locks on the doors of the house. i think the most important thing with the cat's discipline is consistentency, so anything my friend chooses needs to be done by EVERYONE in the house. (the other people dont do any form of discipline, since it's his cat- bad) i'll keep you all updated.

Glad something worked! And yes...your friend will have to tell his roommates to discipline her as well or she'll just continue the behavior with them

^^^Yes, please post a pic. Is this one of the black and white tuxedo cats? My sister has theorized that all of these cats are crazy (I had one, it was crazy, now lives with and is very loved by my ex and his parents).

I don't have any advice though (if I did, then the cat would be living with me still). Sorry.

ok, so update on the kitty:
kitty also likes to claw up and ruin the carpets. the doors have been locked in the past to prevent the cat from coming in and the cat meows REALLY loud, claws the door and claws up the carpet- the carpets are pretty much ruined in this house thanks to nutty kitty. i'll see if my friend has a place without carpet to put nutty kitty in when she's bad.

the spray stuff to get nutty kitty to stop clawing does not work at all. it was sprayed on a sofa and the cat ran up and clawed the sofa minutes later.

do they have psychiatric meds for kitties? i know i saw someone had to give their dog prozac on a show once, but i'm not sure how safe this is.

i dont have a pic, but the cat looks like this one:

My crazy-behind tuxedo cat, Petey, (I love him!!!) likes to jump on the loveseat and pee... TMI... Anyway, to prevent this, I have placed a plastic sheet on the couch and a slipcover over it... The couch makes a crinkling noise when you sit down. But this didn't stop him from hopping up and peeing. So, I placed an assortment of board games boxes on the loveseat (all uneven) so when he hops up there he isn't not able to get any easy footing and falls back down... He hasn't jumped up there since. So, if I have guests come over, I just remove the board game boxes before they arrive so they will have somewhere to sit... A friend of the family had a gi-normous cat that loved to jump up on the stove. So, she placed industrial tape (sticky side up) on the edge of the stove. When he jumped up on the stove, he would always get his hair stuck in the tape on the stove so eventually he stopped jumping up there... You have to think strategically... like Pavlov's "reward and punish system"...

When the kitty bites, try puffing air on her face. They hate that but it doesn't hurt them at all.

That kitty probably needs more exercise. She sounds very high energy. Maybe buy a laser pointer and enjoy the entertainment of watching kitty run all over the place trying to catch the light. Never shine the laser on the couches. Shine the light on the kitty's scratching post so that she learns that it is fun to claw and scratch her own piece of furniture.

Your friend may need to learn kitty body language. He can act a certain way to get a good response out of his cat. There are plenty of books on how to read and mimic cat body language. One cool thing to let kitty know that you are friendly is to stare at your cat until you make eye contact. Then slowly blink. Move your eyelids up and down very slowly, several times. This conveys comfort and friendliness to cats and they will respond in a friendly way. Even cats that are strangers.

This was the case with my cat. Attacking people and biting are supposed to be typical behaviors for cats that are bored. Also, if you don't want to be waken up in the middle of the night, I would suggest playing with the cat before going to bed. As far as the clawing goes, I've had good results with Soft Paws.

Yes, I think my sister's theory is true b/c everyone I know that has one says it's crazy. It's still love, of course. My ex adores that fat tuxedo cat even though he's constantly being attacked by him.
