Default Anyone elses body had enough?

So ive been dancing on and off for 4 years or so, and everything hurts!
My back is always achy, my right knee gives out sometimes when im walking up stairs, and my left ankle throbs when its cold.
I feel like im way too young to be dealing with this
Just wondering if anyone else is in pain? how you deal with it? and does it go away or get worse?

I saved my money and bought myself a really nice massage chair. it helps. A LOT. Or, visit the nearest tech/geek store with those free massage chairs and help yourself to 15 minutes. It helps with my circulation, keeps me relaxed, and feels great after a night of work.

I also use warm compresses every night after work. I throw a put of water to simmer, fill up my compresses and lay down in bed and read a book til I fall asleep.

For quick fixes, I use Icy/Hot too. It smells weird, so I don't use it before or during work, but if my feet are swelling up a bit after a few days of work, I just throw some of that on my feet, kick back, relax, etc.

I think a lot of it is managing stress - if you can keep your body relaxed enough, as well as your mind, you feel better anyway.

Given, I've only danced for 2 years, but it's worked pretty well for me so far!

Wouldn't all the excercise be a good thing for your body?

Dancing is like a sport, for some, and athletes get injured. I try to look at it like that and manage my body accordingly, especially, since I'm a pole dancer. No pain is overlooked. I'm always trouble-shooting problems with my knee, my ankles, my lower back, my shins, and my arms, etc. At times, I do feel like a used car in constant need of repair, but if I didn't take the necessary steps to keep my body healthy, I wouldn't physically be able to dance.

And still going strong, after all these years...

Have you tried taking supplements for joint pain? Glucosamine, Chondriotin and MSM are the best vitamins that help with pain in the joints.

Other ways to speed healing is to eat cottage cheese and pineapple. Pineapple has a vitamin in it called bromelain that speeds bruise recovery. You can also try arnica as a gel lotion on the bruise to speed healing. Cottage cheese naturally contains gultemine which is awesome for msucle and soft tissue recovery. You can buy those items as supplements, but that is on the expensive side.

Try to avoid carbonated beverages. The effervesce is created by sodium bicarbonate, which contains aluminum. The aluminum will cause joint pain all on its own.

Combine those things with drinking plenty of water and eating lots of fresh veggies and fruit. These things will help off-set the damage we do to our bodies as dancers. It is a very atheltic job, and we need to treat our bodies the same way atheles do.

Thats awesome. I agree there would be injuries, but personally I believe being active like that adds years to your life in the long run.

Now, a post from an 80-year old stripper please...

How about a 70-year old stripper?..

I'd even settle for a 60-year old stripper...

No, seriously you're right. Exercise adds years to one's life, but I'd still like to hear from an over-the-hill scrippa'...

I regularly practice hot vinyasa yoga, as well as swimming and biking, so I feel like my body hasn't been hit that hard aside from the bruising on my back....but I feel like that is a little unavoidable until I figure out some sort of way to roll around without constantly being on my spine....maybe it's because I'm thin too...my bones stick out on my back more than most people...I dont know.

I'm vegan as well and eat tons of fruits and veggies...so that has helped with maintaining my energy throughout shifts...I also rarely drink alcohol...so I suppose it could be worse.

I'm just glad it's getting cold outside so I can cover up the bruises for now! Otherwise I would have some explaining to do

For dancers and others who are extremely active, vegan diets aren't going to provide enough nutrients to properly recover all body damage. I know a lot of people out there live perfectly healthy lives eating a vegan diet, but they aren't putting their bodies through the rigors of club dancing, working in smoke filled rooms, working weeks and weeks on end without sufficient breaks away from that atmosphere.

There are trace nutrients that can only be found in animal products that directly contribute to healing. Humans didn't evolve to be vegan. Our bodies will let us know if we are missing something in our diet pretty quickly.

There are humane and safely farmed organic animal products available on the market. Some of the most humane is eggs and dairy. Those animals don't suffer and are well cared for on an organic farm.

I can't imagine being a dancer could be much harder physical-wise than being a professional athlete. Just to mention one: http://www.brendanbrazier.com/ . I exercise quite a bit, too, and at least the last time when I had blood samples taken, the doctor brought up the issue that my cholesterol values (as well as all others) are remarkably good.

Vegan diet is rich in antioxidants (unless it's based on junk food, of course) and I'd imagine that could help to reverse the damage caused by working in smoke and being stressed. The bad reputation of plant-based diet and it's effects has to lie in the fact that some people who follow it have no clue on nutrition. Simply cutting off animal products from one's diet and not replacing them with plant-based protein sources etc. will result in loss of muscle mass, hair and so on.

I agree with the fact, though, that vegan diet needs to be supplemented (with B12 and maybe D, depending on where one lives). But then again, can every non-vegan say he or she eats a varied diet that provides every possible nutrient needed

(As for the pain in the back when rolling on ones back: I think it's uncomfortable for most slim people and that doesn't depend on the diet or profession but the fact that, well, there's no much padding on the outside of the vertibrae.)

^^I agree completely, but the vast majority of us don't have the time to eat properly when going vegan. It is hard work and takes up a large portion of ones day preparing meals. As a dancer, I didn't have the time to invest in eating vegan. Between the gym, salon, tanning, sleeping all day and working all night, eating healthy vegan meals was next to impossible.

There is also the fact that science doesn't know all there is about nutrition yet. We are certainly better off than 50 years ago, but there are still many mysteries about how the human body works and why some people get sick while others with the same exact lifestyle thrive. Environment? Diet? Genetics? It is still to be discovered how to achieve and maintain optimal health.

I am retired from dancing but I do remember the physically taxing effects it had on my body at the time. The stage was a really shitty wooden floor and it would tear your knees up so bad and give you splinters if you were not super cautious.
My back was suffering as well as my ankles.
I had a friend who was dancing for like 7 years and she showed me her feet were permantely deformed from wearing the dancer shoes for so long.
She said her feet totally morphed as the years went by.
I was wondering if standing up all night had anything to slightly do with the varicose veins I got after dancing.

I've danced off and on for 14 years and can't really say I have any long-term effects from it. Sure, if I work a lot I get a sore back and sometimes sore legs, but nothing out-of-the ordinary. I think as long as you try to eat right and maintain your health the best you can, your body will be fine.

You also might think about the way you dance. Are you one of the really aggressive-style dancers? If so, maybe think about taking it easy. I don't do anything too crazy while dancing, so that might be part of why I feel pretty good.

I've danced for eight years and yes I feel it. I have a "sway" back from the shoesd that was corrected only when I was dancing/doing pilates/yoga for 4 hours a day in college.....I;ve also noticed over the years in dance class that I have a hard time keeping my feet pointed correctly or doing tendus without them cramping up. Le sigh.

My mom was a dancer during her early twenties and then began working as a flight attendant (a very physical job- lifting luggage, pushing 300 lb carts, and standing alot). She is 55 years old and is super healthy compared to other women her age (my friends' mothers). The only problem that she complains about are getting her varicose veins on her thighs fixed. She just recently was told by the doctor that she had arthritis/bursitis in her right hip because her hip was hurting her. She has taken a holistic approach to the arthritis/bursitis by soaking daily in epsom salt, yoga, drinking a strong ginger and lime tea daily, and taking CoQ10 and valerian supplements. Her hip has felt much better, she says. Also, she had her feet "done" a few years ago because she had "dancer's feet" (that's what we call them). She got them done right after all of her friends and co-workers got their's done too. These things just come with the territory... But, she says (and I see that) she is very active and healthy...

I've been dancing for 3.5 yrs and I feel it. My body is worn out! I just realized that as I get older, I need to take better care of myself. One big thing: stretch before and after you work. I'm a pretty aggressive dancer, but on the slower nights, I take it easy. I'll actually sometimes wear my non grippy shoes to force myself to take it easy since if I do anything more than strut and pose, I'll slip and fall. I drink A LOT of water while I'm at work, and I don't drink alcohol at work. That helps me keep my stamina for days at a time (tonight will be my 5th night in a row).

No ,exercising in 6-7 inch heels with no ankle support for 8 hours straight isnt good for your body, but it does burn calories and tone some muscles if they are'nt getting pulled, lol.

People wear gym shoes and use mats for a reason when they work out. Dancers wear high heels and grind their knees on hard floors for long periods of time. Pole tricks and floor work probably dont include many trainer approved positions. This is the reality for most dancers i know its not good for your ankles, knees, feet and back. My first year dancing my body improved due to the aerobic aspect along w/ muscle toning. After 10 years i have a permanently weak ankle and cracking knees , back, neck.

    Yet i still love it.

I think the damn platforms are the cause for most of the pain. I was in a great deal of pain after about 4 or 5 years of wearing those Herman Munster looking shoes. My lower back pain only grew worse, along with my left hip and eventually my fingers. But once I returned to CH2 (the only club in town that didn't have rules about the the height of your heels or what you wore on your feet while on stage and the club had a chiropractor right there on the premises) all my aches and pains went away!!!! I had stopped wearing the platforms before working at CH2 however, the fact that I was able to get my back adjusted 2-3 times a week helped a great deal along with not bieng forced to dance in heels. In fact, I questioned numerous girls about their back pain and every single one of them mentioned lower back pain. Some mentioned knee pain. It surprises me that a lot of dancers don't wind up needing hip replacement surgery from wearing those monsterous platforms so much.

Try having a protein drink before and after shift with Creatine to help your muscles recover. Stretching is a good idea too.

A lot of it is also just aging. I am only 23 and I am not as supple as I was when I was 18.
