"More W.Va. voters say machines are switching votes In six cases, Democratic votes flipped to GOP
WINFIELD, W.Va. -- Three Putnam County voters say electronic voting machines changed their votes from Democrats to Republicans when they cast early ballots last week. This is the second West Virginia county where voters have reported this problem. Last week, three voters in Jackson County told The Charleston Gazette their electronic vote for "Barack Obama" kept flipping to "John McCain".

I've never voted using a touch screen machine so I'm not sure how they work. Do you have an option to review your votes before you submit them os are they recorded as soon as you touch the screen? The former would make more sense but I don't know if thats how they operate. It would give you a chance to make sure that the machine is caught up.

We switched to optical scan machines last year but I wish they had stayed with the old lever machines. There was something very satisfying about flipping those little switches then pulling the big lever and hearing them clunk home. Felt like you'd really done something. Feeding that ballot into a scanner just doesn't have the same feel.

In the Ohio county I live in, you must review the votes before hitting the submit button. The votes are stored electronically and a hard copy is produced.

Sounds to me like the folks talking to the wvgazette consumed a little too much moonshine or are Obots trying to stir up something because of the bad publicity ACORN has been receiving lately.

Yes. The article implies as much when it quotes an election official urging people to review their choices before finishing.

At least there's a paper ballot to double check via the optical machine system. I don't trust digital voting with no paper trail.

Yeah, but I'd rather the hard copy be produced directly and manually by the voter, then fed into a machine for digital recording, like the optical scans. It sounds like, under the system you describe, if someone tampers with the digital recording, a false result is merely duplicated on the hard copy.

Perhaps. But we're talking about computers here. How many times have you tried to relay to some "expert" that something is wrong with a program, you just know it isn't working right because of an unexpected result, and they won't listen? So it could, in fact, be glitching under some circumstances that the official check is failing to replicate. Alternatively, how many computer programs aren't designed to behave intuitively as an average user would expect it to? Even if that's all that's wrong, there's still a problem that should be addressed.

I remember about ten years ago when computer voting was just becoming a popular topic, a bunch of us programmers were talking about the idea. We all had enough experience to trust our own code maybe 85% of the time and anyone else's code maybe 60% of the time at best; nobody in the group said they would have any confidence at all in the results generated by a computerized voting system.
yep, my programmer husband said the same thing.
we have a paper ballot with the scanner.

Now some REAL voter suppression is going on:

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27508967?GT1=43001

One of many new misleading calls, fliers, and e-mails cropping up, among other things:

"In Pennsylvania, e-mails appeared linking Democrat Barack Obama to the Holocaust. "Jewish Americans cannot afford to make the wrong decision on Tuesday, Nov. 4," said the electronic message, paid for by an entity calling itself the Republican Federal Committee. "Many of our ancestors ignored the warning signs in the 1930s and 1940s and made a tragic mistake.""
