Default Who does not celebrate Oct. 31?

Im wondering because though Im not really into religion, my daughter attends a private christian school. I enrolled her there mostly for the education and safety, religion was last on my pro list. So they are not allowed to celebrate Halloween, which is Ok with me. But she really wants to go trick or treating. I dont really know what to say,and i dont want to go against what she learns in school.
I guess this isnt really a question, because I already know what I should do. Any ideas of alternative celebrations for oct. 31? Maybe movies or something..

    That's retarded.

I went to Catholic school and they never banned Halloween, wtf?

I say let her go. trick or treating.
Just explain that what school teaches and what you teach aren't always the same and it's ok.

    I agree with Sirona.
Also, there may be more things the school teaches that you may have to go against. This seems like a pretty minor thing you can use to discuss how you will handle future things you disagree with.

I also went to a christian school. They did not celebrate halloween, but around the same time halloween came around they would have a fall festival, and we did halloween type activities. It was so much fun! They had a dunking booth, a MASH tent, where you could get bandages on fake wounds, a building was set up as the catacombs *spelling is wrong probably, and romans would try to get you in there, you could buy tricks to play on people like dissapearing ink, and confetti eggs, arcade games, and hay rides.

In some Christian families, kids dress as Biblical characters...I guess they steer clear of dressing like the personification of evil. Some school have Fall Festivals instead of Halloween parties. Cheers, Harlow

My mom (note: she was in more of your position Xiomara- we went with other family members) used to take us even though our church was very against it (even condemning the notorious Christian version, the "Hallelujah Party")- i'm talkin' ultra conservative/scared straight-ish movies that went into (extreme to say the least) paganist practices of halloween. I was never torn by it- but i would forego it some years, here and there- it was all about the candy for me

In time she will come to see her position for herself

I'm not a mom, but Halloween being one of my favorite holidays, I don't see the harm in allowing her to do what all the other kids her age will be doing. Personally, I think it's a right of passage and it's just good ol' fashioned fun.

Just explain to her the reason her school doesn't celebrate it (weather it's for safety concerns or because it's "the devils holiday"), and then maybe explain the other side to that argument (it's a Halmark holiday, it's simply for the sake of children (adults too) expressing their creativity, dressing up is fun, getting scared is fun, the festivity behind the fall season not necessarily "all hallows eve").

I would also explain the safety concerns behind it like not going out by herself, checking candy, wearing bright clothing, taking a flashlight, not going in strangers homes, going with a group, etc... And then maybe "halloween manners" explaining that playing tricks isn't nice, and to respect others and their property.

I dunno....it would be a bummer for her to get older and feel bummed that she had to miss out on those things.

Either way, she's your child, and you will undoubtedly make the right decision in regards to her and the upbringing you wish for her to have. Good luck!

Let her go, there probably more against it being some kind of "evil holiday for satan". You kid dressing up as some character and getting free candy is totally different.

If there are other moms that dont celebrate Halloween have a slumber party where they can watch funny kiddy movies (eat popcorn),have each child bring over candy that everone can share.

lmao ....damn Christians ...no offense but come on they created Halloween to smother pagans and Samhain into nothing-ness and now they dont even want to celebrate their own holidays ?? OK .....

I am pagan (guess that by now huh ?) and I still celebrate everything ...my neighbors are Bosnian and some of their holidays look kool ....I would try them ....nothing wrong with having a happy day full of the people and things you love .....anyways as a mom I would def let my kid enjoy Halloween like every other normal American kid SHOULD.....

We will celebrate Samhain and Halloween

I think the main stream holidays are not about religion at all anymore (which is fine imo) its more about kids and having fun so they shouldnt be so uptight about them .....its just a fall festival after all .....

sorry I am ranting huh ?

    ditto what sirona said.

what -you- think is true is what matters. if you don't see a problem with it, explain to her why you don't and why it's ok for you to have different opinions than the school. at some point she'll have to learn different people believe different things and that it isn't always harmful.

Lol ,hold on ....I am sure it shouldnt be hard to find .....basic history 101

    http://inventors.about.com/od/sstart.../a/Samhain.htm

Samhain became the Halloween we are familiar with when Christian missionaries attempted to change the religious practices of the Celtic people. In the early centuries of the first millennium A.D., before missionaries such as St. Patrick and St. Columcille converted them to Christianity, the Celts practiced an elaborate religion through their priestly caste, the Druids, who were priests, poets, scientists and scholars all at once. As religious leaders, ritual specialists, and bearers of learning, the Druids were not unlike the very missionaries and monks who were to Christianize their people and brand them evil devil worshippers.

and for the record, christians did not "invent" halloween. to make a long story short:

they stole "samhain" and tailored it to fit their religion (moving their celebration of all saints day/all hallows day). there's much argument over if this was done to ease pagans into christianity, or if it was more forceful. the holiday has since, over many years, become a mismatch of different traditions. some of it still relates to the pagan "samhain", some of it to "all saints day" and much of it is still just good ole irish folklore.

    This one too http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religi...alloween.shtml

November 1 coincided with the Pagan festival of Samhain. Encyclopaedia Britannica says this date may perhaps have been chosen 'in an effort to supplant the Pagan holiday with a Christian observance', and this would have been in line with the policy, suggested by Pope Gregory I of adopting Pagan buildings like the Pantheon and festivals like Samhain to serve a Christian purpose. Expanding on what I was taught in high school history class, I've always figured it was to prevent - or simply gloss over and deny - "backsliding" by those who had recently been forcefully converted.
Yeah all the major holidays .....8 sabbats of pagan religion ....well documented in pre-christian times ....everyone always asks what Easter eggs and bunnies have to do with Christ ....ask a pagan , we will be more than happy to tell ya !!!

I didn't know anything about the Samhaim thing and stealing halloween from Christians stuff until I read this thread, and most likely kids don't either. Celebrating Halloween doesn't equate to worshipping Satan either. Halloween is about dressing up & getting a buttload of candy once a year. I'm sure kids see it as such as well. I don't see it as being a religious (or anti-religious) holiday, just a chance for kids to be kids.

I would emphasise that it a chance to play dress up, and have fun! The modern holiday has very little religious connotations anyway. I'm pretty sure a large majority of her school mates will be celebrating it anyway.

In North America, Christian attitudes towards Halloween are quite diverse. In the Anglican Church, some dioceses have chosen to emphasize the Christian traditions of All Saints Day,[45][46] while some other Protestants celebrate the holiday as Reformation Day, a day of remembrance and prayers for unity.[47] Celtic Christians may have Samhain services that focus on the cultural aspects of the holiday, in the belief that many ancient Celtic customs are "compatible with the new Christian religion. Christianity embraced the Celtic notions of family, community, the bond among all people, and respect for the dead. Throughout the centuries, pagan and Christian beliefs intertwine in a gallimaufry (hodgepodge) of celebrations from October 31 through November 5, all of which appear both to challenge the ascendancy of the dark and to revel in its mystery."[48]
The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, now known as Halloween, the boundary between the alive and the deceased dissolved, and the dead become dangerous for the living by causing problems such as sickness or damaged crops. The festivals would frequently involve bonfires, into which bones of slaughtered livestock were thrown. Costumes and masks were also worn at the festivals in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or placate them.
    <snip>

Many Christians ascribe no negative significance to Halloween, treating it as a purely secular holiday devoted to celebrating “imaginary spooks” and handing out candy. Halloween celebrations are common among Roman Catholic parochial schools throughout North America and in Ireland. In fact, the Roman Catholic Church sees Halloween as having a Christian connection. Father Gabriele Amorth, a Vatican-appointed exorcist in Rome, has said, "[I]f English and American children like to dress up as witches and devils on one night of the year that is not a problem. If it is just a game, there is no harm in that." Most Christians hold the view that the tradition is far from being "satanic" in origin or practice and that it holds no threat to the spiritual lives of children: being taught about death and mortality, and the ways of the Celtic ancestors actually being a valuable life lesson and a part of many of their parishioners' heritage.[48] Other Christians, primarily of the Evangelical and Fundamentalist variety, are concerned about Halloween, and reject the holiday because they believe it trivializes (and celebrates) “the occult” and what they perceive as evil. A response among some fundamentalists in recent years has been the use of Hell houses or themed pamphlets (such as those of Jack T. Chick) which attempt to make use of Halloween as an opportunity for evangelism. Some consider Halloween to be completely incompatible with the Christian faith[53] due to its origin as a Pagan "festival of the dead." In more recent years, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston has organized a "Saint Fest" on the holiday.

Some Wiccans feel that the tradition is offensive to "real witches" for promoting stereotypical caricatures of "wicked witches".
