    running shoes

For those of you who do run, what do you recommend brand-wise? I think I've been bitten by the running bug since I did our Race for the Cure a couple weeks ago. I know you get what you pay for but I don't want to pay too much. I loved the Reeboks I had many years ago but don't know what else is good.

This is a tough question to answer, because there are so many variables - what is your stride like; do you over or underpronate; what distances do you run; how heavy are you; do you have a narrow or wide foot; how high, low, or normal are your arches; and what is your preference for cushioning?

I have a narrow foot, normal arch, neutral stride, and I prefer moderate cushioning - and I run in a nike elite 4 (which is a Bowerman series... if you are going to buy Nike, buy Bowerman - the high-tech shoes with pumps and springs look cool, but do nothing for your feet). I also have ran several years in Adidas Ozweego classics.

You really should go to a specialty running shop. They will be able to recommend a good shoe based on the questions I mentioned above. But in the end, it is a lot of trial and error. I've bought shoes, wore them a week, and threw them in the back of my closet. Other models (like the ozweego), I've probably bought 10-12 pairs of.

    good luck!

Do your feet pronate much when you run? If you do then you can't go past Asics, particularly the Kayano Gel 14s.

They'll burn the hip-pocket at $AU 200, but they are the top of the range and will make running for miles upon miles seem much more effortless.

Some sport stores might still stock the Kayano Gels 13s from last season which you can usually score for half the price of the 14s. There's not much difference between them imho, aside from minor changes in aesthetics.

I run in Nike Shox... has been good to me so far. I used to run track...had shin splints(unfortunately) and haven't had any problems in the past few months.

tampadancer has the right idea. different people need a different kind of shoe. Some people need a firmer sole, while others need a softer one. You should go to a runners store and have them check your feet out. They can probably get you in a good shoe that will be best for you.
veronica, not sure how long you have been running in the nike shox but be careful. They are natorious for causing ankle and knee problems since they provide virtually no ankle supprot.

I think you can't go wrong with nike. They always have all the latest technology and they have a reputation to maintain so every pair of shoes is good. I just like to wear adidas cuz they're a little wider.

I really rate Mizuno, I'm a mild overpronator and have run two half marathons in them. Not sure whether they're available in the States though. I'd recommend going to a running shop and getting your gait analysed so you know what kind of support your feet need.

Thanks for the info! I'm needing to go to a running store and find out all that stuff. To my knowledge my feet don't proneate. I figure skate also so from just recently being fitted for new skates I know my arches have fallen and I have a narrow/combo width foot (the old skates were a 6 1/2 A/AA). I don't know if they proneate when I run though since I'm just getting into running. Plus I'm wanting to lose some weight before my 10 year high school reunion next year. I get shin splints when I first start out running or walking so I don't know.

New Balance. Their salespeople actually have to go through hours of training about shoes, peoples' feet, and shoe types before they're out on the floor, and their shoes are the shit.

if you have really high arches, you can ge those ball things that go into your shes. The inserts. When you first start wearing them they feel liek a ping pong ball in your shoe but ppl that need them swear by them.

I had a boyfriend back in college that worked at one of those big athletic stores. He got me wearing Asics and I have never gone with another brand for running since then, the pair I have now is the Kinsei.

If you're actually looking to getting serious about running... take the time to find a REAL running store.
If you go into a real store... they should actually take the time to watch you run... and give suggestions accordingly.

If you aren't into going that far... Generally speaking... New Balance/Asics are the direction to go in...

I have been liking avia. A really cheap shoe. But recently I went all over the place looking for new shoes. It seemed like all the right foots were weird to me. This has never happened before. It felt like I could feel the inner construction on the shoe.
Not trying to threadjack. Does this mean I should get a professional to look at it? An arch flatening?
    Thanks.

As a casual jogger who travels a lot, and uses running shoes as frequent casual wear, my thoughts on the different brands:

1). Saucony- Probably the best solely based on running, certainly best bang for buck, drawback being not as comfortable as others for casual wear ( seem to be stuffier than others)

    2) Nike- Good overall, seemed to last a bit longer than some New Balances- just as comfortable casual & running, but it comes with a price.

    3) New Balance- Many traits of Nike, 991 or 992 model didn't last that long for me. Too many of their shoes have that loop thing in the back which I don't care for- a nitpicker,I know.

Asics & Avias are easier on the wallet, feel comfy in casual wear, but not as good running as 3 above brands.
