Default I've decided to go on a water fast...

Living in Vegas I've become a fricken alcoholic lol. I was drinking at least four glasses of something a day, from vodka to hennesy to gin it was crazy!

I have been sober (wow never thought I'd use that word in reference to myself) for a week and a half

For the past 4 days or so I've been extremely tired and sleeping about 11hours a day.

I decided that starting NOW, I'm going to go on a water fast.

    My Plan:

I will only drink water (duh) for 3 days max. After the three days I will only eat a small portion of foods like peas, carrots and grilled chicken for three days (the thought of the food is making me think twice about this lol). After three days of eating ,I will then fast again this time for 5 days. Then 5 days eating small portions, then five more days of fasting. Thats when I will be all done with fasting. Then I'll just start eating smaller portions and healthier foods then what I do now.

In the process I know I will lose weight, which I don't mind so I will keep you updated on exactly how much im losing every time I fast. I will also let you know how I'm feeling as far as my mood and if I'm still fatigued. I will answer any questions you may have...

I probably won't post before and after photos untill I'm all done! lol <<< big error
what I meant to say is I wont keep taking pictures to show my progress until I'm finished and that's when I will show A before and after pic.

    Wish me luck!

That sounds REALLY unhealthy....not eating for 3 days? Why would you starve yourself like that? If you feel bloated and unhealthy from drinking alcohol, try drinking water but ALSO eating healthy (normal sized portions) foods. You are going to completely fuck up your metabolism by not eating, starving yourself is NOT healthy....jeez. BTW, where did you get this "diet" idea from?

    Aww man lol

I got it from google I typed in fasting and water fasting came up as well as juice fasting. I kept doing searches and found that many people do it and have good results. Most ppl have done it min of 5 days. I want to ease into it which is why I want to start with 3 days.

Got this from wikipedia here is the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fasting
    Health improvement

Some engage in water fasting as a detox diet. No energy is spent on digestion, other than to heat any cold water to reach homeostasis of a uniform body temperature. The fast is normally undergone with the intent of detoxification for greater health. The reasoning behind this is that less energy is expended on digestion of foods, resulting in more energy for the rest of the body to expel toxins as well as to recover and heal itself from the stresses digestion places upon it. Paul C. Bragg referred to this energy as the "Vital Force," and popularized water fasting with his many books including Bragg Health Crusades, and success with Hollywood celebrities like Stephanie Morgan, and Clint Eastwood.[1] Other proponents claim that protein sparing minimizes muscle loss as the body adapts to the lack of incoming protein by drawing upon almost solely fat for energy. Even so, metabolism will slow during an extended fast and physical/mental activity should be minimized for safety reasons.[citation needed]
Joel Fuhrman, MD, believes that many diseases can be reversed through pure water fasting. These include asthma, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, colitis, psoriasis and various auto-immune disorders.[2]

Reading even more into it after your statement I've decided to do it the other way around.

I'm going to eat for three days. Small portion healthy foods. Then I will fast for three days and so on and so forth.

A lot of people seem to have misguided ideas about fasting being unhealthy, but short-term water fasting can work wonders as a detox if done right. I did the same thing when I decided to stop drinking, and felt loads better after two weeks. It will hit you hard and feel extremely unpleasant at first though, because you'll be releasing all the built-up toxins quickly and all at once.

Good luck, take care, and I hope you feel better soon!

I have done water fasts before and found that for me, they work better if I take supplements as well. Not getting your vitamins and minerals can make you extremely fatigued.

You have more will power than me.... I don't think I could go 3 days without eating anything and definitely know I couldn't make it a week. It doesn't sound very healthy though.

Thats what I thought! I didn't think I could to it. But I'm telling myself I can, I will, and water is so delicious lol

Today I just had my first meal of grilled chicken, rice, peas and carrots yumm lol oh and water.

This is not a typical meal for me so its a huge step! I'm more of the bbq chicken, french fries ,cole slaw, potatoes, and mac n cheese type for one meal not including the chips and fudge snakie cake after! To top that all off a nice 2 or 3 glasses of pink limonade! yeah I'm making huge leaps.

So like I said I will do this today tomorrow and then the day after. I want to slowly tell my body that its about to go without food instead of going from what I regularly do to NOTHING. Then I will start fasting and drinking only water.

I will let everyone know how it goes so far so good.

I don't understand how fasting is going to give you more energy. Why not increase your water intake and eat a balanced nutritional diet? What is your current diet? If you are unsatisfied with your eating habits try changing foods and adopting different, healthy habits. Have you tried 6-7 small meals a day? Do you exercise regularly?

Starving yourself will not help you lose weight or correct your eating habits.

The tiny amount of weight you lose while starving (which is mostly water and essential nutrients and minerals) will only accumulate again once you start eating. Starving is pointless and unhealthy.

EAT. EAT. EAT. EXERCISE. EXERCISE. EXERCISE.

There are lots of documented cases of people curing themselves of illnesses through fasting. It sounds as though your diet was a bit "toxic" before.

    Good luck on your journey.

Yea, if that's how you were eating before, then anything would be a healthy improvement lol. You will have more energy and lose more weight if you go about your diet the way you mentioned above- with protein and veggies and such, and you'll probably feel much better, too.

You don't need to "detox" that's what a liver and kidneys are for.

^^umm yeah and they get taxed from drinking alcohol and eating lots of fried foods. fasting is actually a very healty practice and is not starving yourself.

the master cleanse is very good and can be done for quite some time( like fourty days) by an experienced practicioner.

^^ Um yes exactly. The kidneys and liver function beautifully unless you over work them by eating crap ie alcohol and fried foods.
So no, you don't need to detox if you eat properly.

^ but i thought that was the OP's problem... the fact that she has bad eating habits and drinks too much?

I think detox is a good idea... if I had the strength to do it I would! but i just love my food wayyyy too much. My friend did some type of detox and I seriously saw a change in her... she lost a few pounds and her skin cleared up. She even said it helped with her breathing.
    good luck! keep us updated.

TO the OP. I would recommend you look into the master cleanser. It is lemon water, cayenne pepper and molasses. A water fast alone is not a good idea. Your body needs its nutrients for energy. Research the master cleanser.

not trying to bicker ivanafox but, in light of all the enviromental hazards in our day to day life i think its quite a stretch to say that w/good diet and no alchohol livers and kidneys function beautifully;therefore no need to detox. our livers filter everything cigarette smoke, exhaust, air pollutants, contaminated water, pesticides etc. so yeah if you are living in pure air with pure water and eating organically maybe your organs would be beautiful and pristine. not really the case in our time period i am afraid. i know less about kidneys but with livers even heavy proteins can be taxing some nuts and seeds included. fasting has always been a part of health and religious practices. i think pretty much everyone could benefit allowing their bodies to rest by temporarily withholding food.

You should look into doing a detox fast. After drinking so much for so long, you probably have a lot of toxins built up in your body. But only drinking water won't clean out your system sufficiently.

There are a lot of detox cleansing routines out there. A water fast is only for advanced fasters. Don't try it your first time out.

If you want to get real serious on cleansing, make an appointment with a naturopathic doctor and have her prescribe a detox fast just for your concerns. It really is worth the results you will get instead of just guessing what is right for you.

All a detox cleanse does is boost the immune function of the body. If the immune function is sluggish from environmental factors, it can cause simple fatigue up to deadly cancers.

That is what people mean when they say "cleanse or detox". Boost the immune system to fight environmental toxins.

I did a water fast for 14 days a couple years ago. I lost 17 lbs. It was at the Tanglewood wellness center outside DC, so it was supervised and they transitioned us to eating raw food after you break the fast. I think the clinic might have moved to Panama.

I would have crazy dreams about food when I slept, lol! it's crazy realizing how addicted you are to "bad" food.

We meditated 3 times a day and pretty much just reflected and were told to do the least amount of movement during the fast. I was drinking heavily before I went to the wellness clinic and was still hung over when I got there. About 2 days into the fast, (this is gross sorry) I felt just horrible and stayed in my room the whole day. That night I threw up the alcohol I had drank 2 nights before getting there! Then I immediately felt better. It also helped that the wellness center had an in-house doctor that checked us every morning.

Fasting is a crazy experience. Be careful because you get very very weak and about 4 days into the fast, your tongue gets covered with a fuzz i think due to ketosis. If you do decide to do this Be safe!!

When i was doing my dance training at University our dance teacher taught us to fast one day a week to cleanse our system.

This wasn't difficult because i was a poor student at the time so didn't eat much anyway and it gave me a great excuse for lazy Sundays where i would do nothing but drink detox tea or hot lemon water and read.

It wasn't too mentally taxing because it's only 24 hours and it really did make you feel well rested - just giving your body a little break does wonders.

We were told that to fast for longer than that was not healthy, especially as dancers we needed to fuel our muscles and not have our body attack our muscle by starving. I had a 22inch waist in those days so it definitely worked for me! Hmmm, maybe i could lose theextra 2 inhes now by doing this again...

Ummmm sorry but this is ridiculous. Youtube Citric Acid Cycle or Kreb Cycle... helloooo you need food to make ATP and ADP = energy. How about trying to eat fresh veggies, meat and whole grains instead... would make more sense and then your brain wont shut down due to lack of glucose.

^fair enough... "shut down" maybe a little dramatic. But it will definitely effect her cognitive ability. I wouldnt recommend doing anything that involves higher brain functioning when you havent eaten for 3 days. I know there is no way in hell I would be able function after days of not eating. I just dont see the point when you could just be healthy by eating properly.

Ive actually tried to do some research but there is actually very little in this area. I see that there is some research that suggests cardiovascular benefits and perhaps gastrointestinal benefits (although nothing solid and other studies showed issues as well) but I still believe the effects on mood and cognitive functioning would be detrimental. Ive studied diet and metabolism in depth and not eating goes against everything Ive learned. But if you have done it and it works for you then I guess that is the best test. I on the other hand would prefer to just eat clean and exercise... sounds easier.
