    Default Cat Incontinence

I have a 14 year old cat. He's almost completely stopped using the litter box. It's really sad, he drinks water for up to 5 minutes - which I've read is a sign of his kidneys shutting down

We've taken him to the vet, he's not sick. No UTI, or weird pH balance - he's just old. He usually pees and poops wherever he happens to be. It's starting to cause problems with my fiance and I. Sometimes we think he should be euthanized - that he's getting so old (he has a tumor, but the vet didn't think it was anything) and we don't want him to get to the point where he is in pain or dies uncomfortable and alone.

Other times it feels like he's our responcibility. It's horrid to put him to sleep just because he's a burden. He's still sweet and affectionate and enjoys his life and family. Even if he is destroying out apartment

    Any comments would be helpfull.

Well I was having the same problem with my cat Wednesday. Except he was only three and it turns out that he had FIP. It is a respritory desease. There is no medicine or cure for it. I noticed him drinking water for longer times, barely eating, sneezing often, crying to me, holding me while we slept more often than ever. He was very affectionate with me. He used to love my fiance but th edesease attacks their immune system and mentaly damages them. He lost all intrest in him. This all caused my other cat Whiskers to start using the rest of the apartment as his litterbox because he knew Wednesday was sick. It was a huge mess everywhere and anywhere they saw fit. But since Wednesday has passed Whiskers uses it now. Thing is that I didn't know Wednesday had a desease. I would have done anything in my power to make him better again, then later I found out what it was. Now Whiskers has it but he has a better chance of surviving it because he is older.

Did you have a test run for this desease? I mean if your cat is older and becoming fragile and he has this maybe it will be best to put him down. But I try not to think of it because it takes cats half an hour to pass when they do that and they feel all of it the whole time. oooo I wish I could help you more with this.

If you choose to keep him, perhaps assure your fiance that you'll be responsible for cleaning up the mess always. Also, if you have carpeted areas, you might think about changing to a different floor covering. If you have area rugs, roll them up and store them for now. Use a nice smelling disinfectant in the cleanup as well.

If you decide to euthanize him, well that's a tough decision to make but you are in the best position to make that decision.
I could support whatever you decided to do.

Cats are very stoic and do not show how much pain or disconfort they are in.

We had a cat that was my son's from when he was four years old, so he remembered her as the cat he had had all his life. She developed a melanoma in one of her eyes. We spent literally thousands of dollars trying to save her, but finally we had to give in and put her to sleep.

Looking back on it, I think we kept her alive for ourselves, not for her. We were not willing to let her go.

If you feel your cat is still enjoying his life, hang in there. Your cat is a companion, not something to be thrown away as it wears out. But if you thing he is miserable or suffering, let him go. Urinary tract diseases can be pretty painful in humans, and I would guess they do not feel comfortable for a cat, either.

Thanks so much for everyone's support. I'm still not sure what to do, but another trip to the vet is definantly in order. I'm trying to prep myself if we do euthanize him.

You're right, Mike, he probably wouldn't let us know if he was in pain. He doesn't have a UTI, but he is very old. And I don't think he would survive treatment for deseases like cancer or kidney failure. It really sucks, because the only behavior changes I've noticed is that he's gotten sweeter and more affectionate

The fighting is getting so bad around here, and I know that isn't helping. My fiance gets mad at the cat for peeing on the floor and bitches forever about it. Then I get mad at him for being so mad. Then he gets mad at me for not helping clean up the pee. Then I get mad at him for wanting me to clean up cat pee while we're TTC... ugh! We're just so stupid.

What about putting a diaper on him? Many cats don't want to wear anything but since he's old, maybe he wouldn't be too bothered.

^^ Fiance vetoed the diaper completely. That caused a lot more fights between us. I can't change it, and he's unwilling. Which, I think is stupid because our own baby is going to wear diapers and be a lot more work than a cat! But he says the cat is fluffy (true) so would need his butt shaved, and would freak out over the diaper (possibly true).

But if the vet says there's no reason to euthanize him other than being a bother, I'm willing to put our baby-making off untill the kitty passes, or he stops bitching.

A woman trying to conceive should not be dealing with cat byproducts. Feces can carry a parasite that could cause toxosplasmosis in the unborn child, which can result in blindness. Domestic cats which have been properly cared for do not usually carry this disease, but you can't be too careful.

Wow this sounds like how I have been feeling lately with my new puppy.... People dont understand HOW stressful having an animal that is destroying your shit and cant be controlled and just disgusting.....

Anyway!! It sounds to me like he is probably in a lot of pain and doesnt have control of all his faculties at this point. I would probably think it is for the best to euthanize him.

Does he do this in front of you? If he does then he probably doesn't have any control. If not then maybe there are ways to work around it like putting more cat boxes around the apartment.
    Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

I'm going through the same thing... My cat is 21. She eats like a horse but is still maybe 8 pounds. She can't clean herself and rarely goes out so we have to brush her n sometimes cut her fur it gets so matted. I don't know what to do. I find her turfs around the house, I thought it was bc I wasn't changing the litter box enough, but now I change it as often as possible and it keeps happening. I'm going to try putting another litterbox somewhere in the house, but will that confuse her?

    =)

You can get tested for toxosplasmosis. http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/fo...plasmosis-test
