Background info:
So, my attorney asked me to show up to court today. I've been sitting on this case for a year and a couple of days. The judge keeps on postponing and one of the witnesses is having difficulty showing up. Anyway, I sat down in the general audience section of the courtroom. My attorney hadn't arrived yet. There were quite a few people there, a very common crime, i guess. There was one girl, about mid-twenties, my age, sitting in the jury box section. She was the only one there. She caught my attention because she was looking at me the entire time. She was super pretty and resembled me, except with longer hair. Her hair was curly and messy, without any product, and she had on a green t-shirt. I figured that she came to court underdressed, unlike myself, who had on a full suit and bun slicked back. So, a couple of cases were presented and then a guard walked over to the jury box. She stood up. And then I saw that from the waist-down she was shackled down. She had a huge chain around her waist and her handcuffs were connected by a chain to the chain around her waist. The guard opened the jury box and when she stepped down and walked down the aisle, I saw her feet were handcuffed and they were connected to her waist by chain as well. She left the courtroom with the guard. One of the clerks of the court, turned to me and said, "Be glad that you didn't kill anyone with your DUI. She has a DUI Manslaughter." I almost took a poop on myself. Because I realized that that could have been me. I was lucky that I did not hurt anyone because I do not remember my accident. When you drink and drive, you're are basically pulling straws for "Make It Home Safely", "Get DUI", "Get DUI Property Damage", or "Get DUI Manslaughter." When you get into that car, you are playing a game of luck. She could have been me, sitting with the general offenders with a DUI charge, and I could have been her, shackled waist down with a DUI manslaughter on my conscience. I don't know the scenario of her evening, if her boyfriend had kicked her out and taken the keys, and she got on the road under the influence of alcohol and anti-depressants/anti-anxiety medication, like me. Or, maybe she just had a night out on the town. Or, maybe she was going to bed that evening and had taken Ambien and can't remember anything until the scene of the accident. I have heard so many scenarios in the group counseling sessions that I am now attending. But, the people in my sessions have DUIs where nobody was killed and we are all walking free, what the hell happened in her horrid night?! Was it the same as my situation? Or different? I want to cry for her, the deceased, the deceased's family, and her family. I have seen alcohol ruin so many lives (there are people who inherit genes that make them predisposed to alcohol addiction). Officially, as of today, Alcohol, is an old detested friend of mine, who is no longer welcome in my home.
