Default Japanese Straightener + Some Remorse = Help!

Hey Body bussinessss, I got a relativley well known procedure called Thermal reconditioning (aka japanese relaxer, straightner) done on my hair 3 years ago, (I do it once a year) to tame my flyaways and frizz, my hair normally just had a small wave before i got it done, but it did what i wanted to do and it really makes combing and drying soo much easier.

Anyways, after 3 years of smooth hair, Ive been feeling like the grass is greener on the other side. Ive never had a real curl put in my hair before, I went to an Ulta salon to let a girl curl it with a straigntening iron and it was just limp and shitty and did not hold at all. I dont even want curly hair, i just want the option to be able to style it with a curl for a night, or try out big Victoria's Secret hair, I have hair that goes a little past my boobs and i want to play with it!

Has anybody been in this position before? What products or tools do you use to give permanently straightened hair volume and bounce? or am i screwed and im just gonna have to wait till it grows out?

I heard that once you get thermal reconditioning, it will not hold a curl whatsoever. I'm still debating on whether I should do it or not. I would also like to color it but I heard that double processing is not a good idea...

You can try using lots of hairspray or a mousse. Make sure to deep condition your hair once a week.

I was considering getting it done, but my stylist advised against it. My hair is curly, but it's fine. I straighten it daily with no problems, and I don't have a tight curl, just big loose curls. She said that if I do it, I'll lose the body in my hair and it'll just be flat.

I been getting this done for years, and it still holds a curl beautifully with a curling iron. Guess everyone's hair is just different.

p.s. get it done! it will change your life!

My cousin had this procedure done, and when I thought of doing it she told me not to, because when you need it curly it doesn't curl, the remedy would be let the relaxer grow out go trimming it, it will take a while depending on how fast your hair grows.
Needless to say, putting up with that type of stuff can take its toll psychologically

Ooh once my hair gets a bit longer I think I'll do this. I have natural waves but I always always wear my hair straight. Flat-ironing is sooo time-consuming because I have really thick hair. Do you girls think the Japanese straightening would be less damaging than heat-styling almost every day?

I had the liscio system done, and I was told that you can vary the stregnth. Its not HYPER pin straight, but i kind of didnt want it to be either. I believe taking an Iron to your hair multiple times a week is way more harmful than thermal reconditioning. In my head i just can not picture it being any other way, your hair can only handle so much breakage from all the brushing and iron crunching.
5 hours of my life once i year for the convenience was worth it for me, although when I first had it done to my frizzy flyaway hair, i also started practicing proper drying and brushing techniques to ensure i didnt tear more hair up.

another tip, you get what you pay for. Get it done once and get it done right. Doing it over or doing it cheap may cost you your hairs health.

to the ladies that offered advice to me, what brands do you use?

I also use Liscio. I agree with all your advice- but would also like to add that you should find a stylist with a LOT of experience in this procedure!

I need to do it again but it never seems to turn out as well in the wintertime because of the humidity!

UGH I got this done to my hair in high school and regretted it right away. You cannot force the thermally reconditioned hair to curl, you're most likely just going to have to wait for it to grow out and trim it off bit by bit like I did

Lol Apollopink...I did go through the exact same thing. I haven't had mine straightened in almost two years bc I couldn't decide if I wanted to be able to curl it or not. Maybe you should try experimenting more yourself-use curling irons/curlers and see if you can get it to curl for you. Oh-and lots of hairspray ( I used the tall blue Bedhead one).

I had the Liscio done on my hair for about 3 years-depending on how much money I had I would have it retouched every 3-6 months. I believe the Liscio is supposed to be the best.

I LOVED having it done. My hair is naturally crazy curly-like Elaine from Seinfeld. The thermal straightener made it straight, but I still used a flat iron to run over my hair (bc I like the super sleek look).

I got this procedure done to my hair and totally do not recommend it to anyone who has fine curly/wavy hair. Be aware that if you have any type of highlighting done to your hair prior, it will damage the crap out of your hair. My hair literally broke off 3 inches away from my scalp after about 9 months. Ever since the breakage of 6 years ago, I haven't even died my hair - it also left my hair thinner than when I started. However, if I was informed that this straightening process is for thicker hair I would have never gotten it done.

On the flip side, I loved every minute of my straight hair. It was glossy and beautiful and looked like Jennifer Aniston's even when I didn't wash it for days.

You are screwed. I have had this treatment done on me every year since I was 15 and stopped two years ago and it's finally completely back to normal. Styling was such a pain before, no amount of heat or hairspray did it for me. I woke up and a brush would not be necessary because it was so straight. Either you get your hair chemically done again with a body wave and have the option to use a hair straighter on the days you want it straight (not recommended as it's extremely damaging to get two chemical treatment so close together - I had a second chem straightening done too close after my first and a chunk of my hair snapped off) or you can just wait it out.

My hair adores this. I had THICK hair and it's now PIN-STRAIGHT despite still being able to hold a curl. I use Redken, Nexxus, or Aveda products to maintain it, and what really helps is doing my final rinse in ice-cold water. My hair is shiny on the htoest or coldest, muckiest days of the year and retains length beautifully. It's all about playing around with your new style to see what works for you.

you can also braid your hair at night with a little moisturizer and hair spray to achieve a soft wave the next day.

One way of curling it that you can try would be to apply hairspray to the strip of hair your curling, curl that strip, and apply more spray to that curl when it's done. Then continue that routine 'til your whole head is done. I have fairly straight hair that doesn't like to hold curls and goes flat fairly easy, but as long as I put hairspray on before I curl each strip it holds fine. And spray each strip individually. DO NOT just put spray all over your whole head first. =-P
