    Default Abnormal pap smear/genital warts

i just recieved a call from my obgyn telling me that my pap smear was abnormal and that i needed to come back in six weeks. obviously there's nothing i can really do but wait and fret and go online and try to play dr to myself. to make a long story short, my exboyf of two years told me that he has genital warts before we hooked up. he told me that he got it pretty much right after he had sex with the girl that passed it to him. since genital warts can usually be seen upfront, do you think i might have gotten that strain of hpv (even though i don't see anything though i know it's can be present inside the vag but wouldn't my dr catch that?) or do you think i might contracted a different strain of hpv? i am currently active with a different guy and i told him about the call and stuff. what makes me sad is that if i do get anything, i hope it's from my current guy and not from my ex because i would feel so ashamed to tell my current guy that i was with someone that has genital warts and that there's a chance that i might have passed it to him.

Try not to stress so bad,it could be any number of things!

If it were something truly awful I'd hope they'd get you back in for a followup sooner than 6 weeks?

I'd probably get another smear done at a clinic or something to see if it's still coming back abnormal.

These tests are accurate but not 100%...

HPV is so stigmatized, yet it is the most common STI/STD. The strains that cause warts are different from the strains that cause abnormal paps. You can have more than one strain. Ask your doc to test your strains, get the Gardasil vaccine just in case, and be open with your BF. It's not shameful to have HPV! It's hard to see the vaginal walls period, even with a speculum in it, so use protection and keep up with the paps. I remember feeling like a dirty whore who was being punished by God for my promiscuity when I got HPV. Now I'm over it and just praying to not get cervical cancer. You'll be OK, I swear.

Did they mention if it was hpv? If your obgyn wants you back in 6 weeks rather than sooner, maybe he/she isn't too concerned about what the result showed? Just make sure you keep up with those Pap smears and whatever monitoring they recommend to you.

I had an abnormal pap 2 years ago with an ASCUS result, and my obgyn did a followup test for hpv which came back negative. She recommended just doing another pap smear like normal the following year, and that one turned out normal. Apparently, it's not all that unusual to get some false positives.

I hope you get some good news. Be strong!

oh goodness. Well I hope the other girls are right. i dont know anything about getting abnormal results from a pap. But i do agree that if it was something you could give to someone else she would have you back sooner so that you DIDNT give it to anyone else.
    Good luck girly.

I once had an abnormal pap. It was bacterial vaginosis. My family doc gave me a prescription and it was over in 2 weeks. So, it could be anything. Don't stress...

Whatever you do don't play doctor at home or look up too much info... it will only freak you out and if you're anything like me you will convince yourself you have AIDs, herpes, and are pregnant.
6 weeks is a while so it's clearly not a life or death deal I'd just wait it out.
Good luck I know how icky that waiting feeling is!

u'll be fine...if it was really serious you would have been called in the office and talked to that day or week.

90% of women have atleast one abnormal pap in their life. it depends on "how" adnormal the pap is, and the seriousness of it...like i said if it was serious they would have called you in way earlier then 6 weeks.

9 times outta 10 ur next pap will be normal....

HPV is so common and the most common reason for abnormal paps. I had abnormal paps for 4 yrs, I had to go every 6 mths to make sure it didn't turn into cervical cancer. I had cervical dysplasia.

i have to wait 6 weeks because that's how long it's supposed to take to get new cells to show up. if i show up tomorrow, they wouldn't be able to swab out any cells. i feel guilty because i had a sexual relationship with someone who was very upfront about his disease and i still took it upon myself to have sex without a condom with him (even though i know i still could have gotten it with one). and then to have a sexual relationship with another person without informing them about my past relationship. sigh. yes, i really need to calm the fuck down. anyways, thank you for the support and the info. : )

HPV can be spread even with condoms. Almost everyone who is sexually active will contract it in their lifetime and there is no way it can be tested yet on males. (It MIGHT have some link to penile cancer but other than that there are few adverse affects to men.) Not all forms of HPV cause warts. It's good that you get a Pap annually though since HPV can cause cervical cancer. Don't sweat it, you;ll be fine.

yeah I had HPV when I turned 18 and I had a biopsy and was so scared. This was about 10 years ago and not a lot of people had heard of it. I have totally normal paps now. It is so over-stigmatized like Valerie said. I don't have warts, never had any problem but being scared. It's most likely that it will go away. Just be clean, wear loose comfortable clothes when you aren't working. Drink a shitload of water and try not to smoke. You will be totally fine. It is so so very common.

HPV often clears up by itself. It happened for me. I get a pap every 6 months and I have been normal for like 6 years now.

1 1/4 capfuls of braggs apple cider vinegar (shaken and at room temperature), fill douche bag (one you can wash out well and reuse) w/ room temp. distilled water (only). use this twice a day for a few days. this will keep your cervix healthy. your body usually can fight off the hpv (the one that causes abnormal paps) on it's own. this mixture helps your vag/cervix fight off everything because it is the normal ph of a healthy vagina.

use this in the shower, bend forward, squeeze bag--this way gravity will send this closer to the cervix. wash both applicator and bag with warm/hot water w/a drop of antibacterial soap. rinse frequently and until water runs clear without bubbles. let the bag air dry but sit it on counter so bottom is fat (even if you have to lean it against something). you want it to stay open so the bottom of bag will air dry. do NOT fold away and put it in a drawer.

for maintenance--use once a week (i wouldn't bother while you have your period though). stay away from foods with a lot of sugar, high carbs, breads, pastas. these are not good for a healthy vagina anyway. eat refrigerated probiotics or PLAIN yogurt (most fruited yogurt has a ton of sugar). if plain yogurt tastes nasty, sweeten it with a packet of stevia.

i highly recommend purchasing the Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar book, it's only $8--the uses are amazing! also GTs Kombucha is good for drinking as well (very anti-cancer). i like the grape one .

my dr. said it's possilbe HPV can also be active even on a guy's finger (even though you can't see it). they haven't done a lot of testing on this but she wouldn't rule it out. so if the dude's fingered other ppl (which is a yes, lol), they can spread it that way too.

I've had part of my cervix removed twice, and I've had two biopsies.
    It's no fun,
Probably the most traumatizing experience of my life!
But it's something you need to stay on top of,seriously,it's probably nothing, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
    HPV is very common though,unfortunately.
I don't know about the genital warts though,I don't think the strain that causes cervical abnormalities is the same strain that causes warts.
    I is a mommy.

Well it's possible that you might not ever get the warts. Genital warts ARE a form a hpv. The types 6 & 11 cause warts & the other types (I can't remember the numbers) are linked to cervical cancer. I think it's best to be honest with your guy. You won't ever know where you got it from. But your doctor can answer any questions you have about it. If you're under a certain age, they usually won't give you the hpv test. if you're not experiencing the warts though, then I wouldn't worry about it for now. It is still possible the virus is in you though. Because it's a highly contagious skin-to-skin contact virus. Just keep in check with the doctor. I know it can be a scary thing, but just know it's sooo common, unfortunately.

I too had an abnormal two years ago. They did another pap and found out I had HPV. Then I had two choices: let them monitor me every three months (to make sure it didn't get worse) or to have it removed via a minor scraping called a LEAP. I went with the leap and they scraped it off. I then had to go every few months for a year to make sure it never came back. It never did. I went for a regular pap last December and the results came back fine again. The only bad thing about having the leap is your next menstrual period is usually longer and heavier then normal and you have to wear pads (tampons will damage the scraping). Some women they said don't go for the scraping and it disappears on its own. I wasn't going to take that chance, and since I was lucky to have excellent insurance I went with the leap.

I've never gotten warts in my life, and not everyone does. If I had, I may have known about this earlier.

Something like 80% of women have HPV. It's scary and it sucks, but it's pretty common. And the strains of HPV that cause genital warts are different than the strains that cause cervical changes. So it might not have been your ex.

There's a book called Everything Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You About Abnormal Paps or something like that. It really helped me.
